PS4 Hardware Issues: Should We Be Worried?

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is set to launch at midnight in North America, and early reports from some of those privileged enough to have obtained early access to the systems are reporting problems with the hardware.

I hope not, however im from UK so ill see over the next two weeks at how frequent it is !

hellzsupernova4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

yes we should be concerned.

Sony has stated that it is 0.4% of shipped consoles i dunno if that means shipped to retailers or shipped to consumers.

PS4 isnt out here until the 29th so if the news is bad come tomorrow i can cancel my pre order, although i do not want to!

edit link to prove its 0.4% http://www.ign.com/articles...

combatcash4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

Yup its a small percent but considering the release date is tomorrow this is not good. Does anyone know how long the warranty is?

@lucreto that's what they expect, however the other millions are not in peoples homes. I just find it worrying that this many consoles are having problems specially from reviewers.

I would figure they would send the most reliable ones to them.

Livecustoms4566d ago

Yer same if the news keeps persisting in the next few days i may cancel my order although i've already pre-ordered 2 games :/

Lucreto4566d ago

Since the industry average is 15% they are going good.

If they sell 1 million only 4000 will have a problem.

shoddy4566d ago

Still I can't wait to find out

deep_fried_bum_cake4566d ago

Maybe your eyes don't work so well but the Sony statement says .04% aka 0.04% and not 0.4%.

Ausbo4566d ago

its gonna be fine. Theres gonna be a couple out there with issues.

Xbox will have probably a few defective systems too.

No product is ever perfect

raWfodog4566d ago

It's not .4%, it's .04%.

The difference being 4000 vs. 400 (based on 1 million units shipped). 400 (per 1000000) is a very good failure rate if it holds.

BX814566d ago

0.4% is still a lot. For those acting like it's no biggie, this is how I view it. Sony or ms say we know some systems are faulty just give us your money and it's possible yours will work. Consoles are the only electronics I tend to be weary about when I buy.

LordMaim4566d ago

Your decimal is in the wrong place, making you 1000% wrong.

Boody-Bandit4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

No worries.
I ordered 3. If I am part of that 0.04%. I have spares to hold me over until Sony replaces it.

You know what's more nerve wracking then worrying about having a system possibly going bad on you? Having 9 brand new games and no hardware to run them on.

Seriously, I can't take it any more! I'm tired of starring at all these PS4 games with no hardware to play them with!

8 hours 48 minutes 59 seconds to go!
But who is counting? Not the least bit excited.

8 hours 47 minutes 48 seconds to go!
Seriously, I'm not excited at all!

hellzsupernova4566d ago

mybad .04%
was wondering why there were so many disagrees :)

BX814566d ago

0.04% applies to my earlier comment.

Dgander4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

Thats the only consoles reported on the internet and they only calculate from the number of early releases they didnt count all the pre orders yet. After tomorrow we will know how much it really is (which will be more faulty consoles). Lets be honest the PS4 is made up of cheap and faulty parts. Even the console design itself sucks and it wobbly. Sony is on its last leg from all the money they lost and continue to lose even after they restructured, down sized and sold two buildings. They are stupid to try and directly compete with Microsoft on price point by putting together a console with cheap parts. Dont damage control the truth because IGN and Kotaku PS4's also malfunctioned so its cant just be a mere coincidence that two gaming media outlets are given faulty hardware because usually you would give them the best system possible to do reviews. PS4 is unpredictable, rushed junk at the moment. Even at E3 the PS4 could barely run a last gen game (AC4) without freezing up and skipping frames.

XB1_PS44566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

You're all wrong, it is .4%..

Even the article says much ado about nothing. The YouTube age has everyone going crazy over what amount to 8-10 failed units out of 4000.

Its just silly at this point.

@ TrD4L1fe,

So what your saying is what amounts to a 1% or less failure rate is unacceptable. Electronics fail. It is a given that some units will be defective. So yeah it has definitely been blown out of proportion imo.

My 50" Samsung TV's picture was screwy when I got it home from the store. I went online and found 5 others who had the same issue. Yet the review for the TV was 4.5 stars out of 5. Positive reviews outweighed the negative 50-1. I took the TV back, got it replaced and its been working fine the past 3 yrs.

Gr1mmyshadows4566d ago

8-10 units out of 4000 isnt silly.

what if this is a serious issue? How many units will there be having trouble when 2-3 million consoles are sold

JimmyDM904566d ago

If the figures are right?
5,000- 7,500 faulty units... Out of 2-3 million. Not a lot.

solar4566d ago

if the console isnt released yet and failures are already happening, yes you should be worried. same with a cell phone, a car, a laptop, any other device you pay good money for. the name on the side means nothing if it doesnt work. criticize everything you buy, it is your money.

NextGen24Gamer4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

I was already having cold feet. But with the recent news about consoles not working, breaking within a few hours, etc... I am canceling my pre order and I'll just use that money to buy more xbox one games & accessories. One more week!!!

To those below me...

I have 2 xbox ones pre ordered & 1 ps4 as of right now. I have purchased every single console release for the last 20 years. I love video games and yes I'm more excited for xbox due to the fact that 80% of my family & friends play on xbox live.

I could care less about the console war. I'm a "REAL" gamer who buys what I want, when I want. Doesn't mean I can't have a favorite! :-)

CGI-Quality4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

In other words, you don't expect the X1 to suffer from any issue (even though these are less than 0.2%)? OK, got it.

OT: I wouldn't be too worried. New electronics always suffer from such an issue. But then, we need to wait until a lot more consoles are out in the wild.

ziggurcat4566d ago

don't lie. you never had a PS4 on pre-order.

ziggurcat4566d ago

so... 8 disagrees from elite24gamer, and his 7 alt accounts...

OrangePowerz4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

Going by your profile pic I kind of doubt that you had a PS4 pre ordered and not an Xbone ;)

Kayant4566d ago

I don't think you need that to tell you he wasn't getting one considering he's Mistermediax discipline & was spreading the glorious gospel about the hidden dGPU, before it upgrading to XB1 actually having three GPUs, then local cloud?? Loool.

sAVAge_bEaST4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

Why lie to kick it ? ? ? Why?

LordMaim4566d ago

Maybe you'll be one of the 99.94% of people who don't have any issues.

cyclindk4565d ago (Edited 4565d ago )

Elite24Gamer's PM to me:

Sorry to hear about the 33% failure rate of the ps4's. Oh, and it's getting destroyed on Amazon by verified buyers. 1 star after 1 star. WOW!!!!! LOL"

This reject has no intention of buying one ever, or he is a total psycho who gloats about things he WANTS when they might have an issue!!! TOTAL CRAZY!

RiPPn4566d ago

No, it'll be under warranty, hell if it screws up within 30 days and isn't sold out just exchange it at the store.

GmIsOnPt3604566d ago

We have nothing to fear unless this spreads heavy after official release. Its surely under warranty if it breaks with hours, return get new one problem solved.

The_Ozymandias4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

Is a 0.2% failure rate something to be afraid of?

daftpunkfan4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

EDIT: Nevermind. I guess just hope you're not one of those in the failure group...?

Transporter474566d ago

2000 people out of 1000000 is not that many. Hell the average technology failure rate is 15% MS 360 failure rate was 16%. Yet the 360 survived I doubt you should worry about such things.

Pintheshadows4566d ago

I hate to say this but 0.4% is well within the expected failure rate of new hardware of any kind.
This isn't the big deal that some are trying to make it out to be.

ziggurcat4566d ago (Edited 4566d ago )

no it's not... 2,000 out of 1,000,000 is well the below "normal" hardware failure rates.

for example, i bought a kinect last year, and it was broken right out of the box (the camera part of the device was completely broken). i had never heard of or seen any reports of kinect having significant problems, so is it an inherent problem with the kinect or just one of the few units that happened to have been defective?

and even if these reports are actual hardware problems (and it sounds more like bad HDMI cables/people inappropriately pulling out the HDD/turning off the system during an update), then it's just a case of bad luck, not an inherent problem with the PS4's design.

and how many of the units were given out prior to the official launch date? we've heard a handful of "problems" reported, but what about all of the other units that worked perfectly fine? we're certainly not going to see any reports/articles about that, aren't we... so you can't take a mere handful of people's personal accounts as an overall status report on the quality of the hardware.

Transporter474566d ago

@ziggurcat I was responding to daftpunkfan comment which he changed and makes it seem like I said it. Just saying.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8519d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele18d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk18d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay18d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg18d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle31d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit31d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog32d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog32d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad32d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_32d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage32d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda31d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
