Next Gen Console War Intensifying “Us vs Them” Mentality

Rich Drummond of Richie D Rants says:

"With the next generation of gaming right at our doorstep fanboyism is rampant throughout the gaming community, both online and off. One dares not to put their opinion out there in the open on the internet on either side of the fence due to the fear of being attacked to the point of wanting to delete their post. Even writing this piece, I keep my fingers crossed that fanboys of both Sony and Microsoft won’t find their way onto my article...."

Fanboyism is saddening and stupid. They're just computers that'll be obsolete in a few years. It's not like owning an Xbox or Playstation's life and death.

NinjaRichParty4579d ago

I agree. What blows my mind is to see people personally attack one another over a video game box. It just makes no sense to me.

welcome to n4g...

Thisisjuju4579d ago

I think competition and rivalry is healthy. When it comes down to personal attacks over a console choice though, it all gets a bit sad.

XisThatKid4579d ago

I think in moderation there's nothing wrong and the competition has never been this intense. Two of the biggest and (only) game giants that compete with each other. Are on a great playing field which only the fans can and will decide. This is direct competition and some people feel the need to defend their purchase decisions. Now blind fanatic and ignorance will plague any medium or community especially one as large as ours is and continued to grow, doubled with the anonymity of the internet and lack of consequence for abusing that is the only negativity in my eyes on the subject.

I personally exercise both sides of the coin at times That just me.

"It's not like owning an Xbox or Playstation's life and death."

Owning an xbone would be more like purgatory I reckon! Not quite last gen not quite next gen!

This is a national problem. One that reaches beyond video games.

Jeedai Infidel4579d ago

Politics have divided the U.S. to a point that people think there will be another Civil War. Not that that is something new, but it's been a long time since it was this bad.

Godhimself_In_3d4579d ago

It gets sad sometimes but most times it funny as hell. #PS4GREATNESS-AWAITS

ruefrak4579d ago

I've said it once, I'll say it again, I'm all for it. Pick a side and vigorously defend it. It's no different than picking your favorite sports team and cheering them on while wishing misery on everyone else.
In the end, does it really matter? It's not going to kill anyone if someone has strong emotional attachments to a brand. People have strong emotional attachments to their sports teams, and nobody has a problem with that. So cheer on the Xbox One if you're in their camp. Say screw the Xbone and go PS4 if you're on Sony's side. Unless you've got money to throw away, chances are you're picking one or the other. What's wrong with cheering them on?
And piss off to everyone who disagrees or who bought a NeoGeo! Sucks to be you!! SEGA FOR THE WIN!!!

Sci0n4579d ago (Edited 4579d ago )

well said and regarding sports there has been many cases of reported deaths and violence between opposing fans clashing. The most a gamer probably clashed with regarding gaming debates is his monitor by smashing the screen do to anger lol. Stop acting like a bunch of softies and be proud to represent the brand you favor. If you can think it in your head on why that brand is your favorite you can say it out loud.

mixelon4579d ago

Although the console wars are funny, theres a big difference between the games industry and sports..

In sports there are winners and losers. In this industry there is always work of merit on every side. The "winning" and losing states are moved by fanboys depending on the situation and what makes their platform of choice look the best. Graphics/metacritic/gameplay/o nline/sales - you can always be the winner if you pick your own criteria. So can your opponent.

So whats the point of an unwinnable "war"? All it does is make people look stupid, and make things more difficult for those of us who actually care about the GAMES - and who like discussing games and the industry - not throwing stones and generally being antisocial nobs.

ruefrak4579d ago

Are you saying that in sports, the losing team doesn't have merit? They play their heart out, but they lose. There's still merit in that.
And I'm tired about the "it's about the GAMES" mantra. No it isn't. I can't afford every system. Nobody can (except people at IGN who get to play every game on every system for work). You choose a platform and you play the games on that platform. And so what's wrong with being a die-hard fan for the platform you chose?
I like football, but when I watch my team play their rival, I don't say, "I don't care who wins, its all about the game. As long as I get to watch good football, I'm happy." No. Screw that. If I'm a Dallas Cowboys fans, I'm going to irrationally cheer for them. And yes, I may even invent different ways to determine a winner. Sure we don't have as many points, but we won passing yards.
And it's not an unwinnable war in games. He with the most sales wins. I'm going to be irrational and emotional about it.

mixelon4579d ago

@ruefrak - There's merit in all sports teams, that's not the point I was attempting to make.

What's wrong with being a die-hard fan of the platform you choose? Nothing if it doesn't make you into an idiot. Dismissing everything every platform other than yours has to offer is STUPID. You don't have to play the games personally to appreciate them. You don't even have to like them - to vocally call everything that isn't on your favourite console shit - just because it isn't on your console is ridiculous. A lot of people do this. I'm not planning on getting an X1. It still has some nice looking stuff incoming though - anyone denying that is a moron. They have most of the bases covered for genre types.

He with the most sales definitely doesn't "win" when it comes to valuable experiences. I'd take Flower and Journey over Gears. I'd take Warhawk over COD. I'd also take "proper" coffee over Starbucks.

If he with the most sales wins. Plants VS Zombies 2 - 25 million downloads in 15 days.. F2P yes, but that's making a lot of money in microtransactions. Angry birds franchise - 2 billion downloads (not free) COD and GTA5 also "win" ... Yay?

If the PS3 had only sold half what the 360 did would it have made the PS3 and it's games any less valuable or worthwhile? Same applies to the WiiU - I haven't got one and don't plan to get one, but they have some great games. They also don't sell at a loss, so Nintendo don't have to "win" a stupid sales war that only exists in fanboys heads.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose24d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE24d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername23d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy24d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde23d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8623d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8623d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300023d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
