Call of Duty's Original Codename Was "Medal of Honor Killer"

"The interviews give insight into the fierce rivalry between Activision and EA, and how that rivalry led to the creation of Call of Duty. Back in 2003, when Infinity Ward was formed, Medal of Honor was the shooter franchise to beat - indeed, the original version of the game was much more similar to Allied Assault than the game it eventually became, said Zied Rieke, the COD lead designer who had previously worked on Medal of Honor with EA."

It sure did, and to this day, Battlefield tries to kill CoD not-so-successfully.

Thehyph4459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

All of the guys that made Call of Duty also worked on MoH:AA; the best Medal of Honor game ever.

Maybe, now, they codenamed Titanfall as Call of Duty killer.

edit: Also, Battlefield is a year older than Call of Duty.

STK0264459d ago

I wouldn't say it succeeded. Yes, Medal of Honor is dead, and yes, Call of Duty is the top dog when it comes to first person shooters nowadays (in sales anyway, and for a publisher, it's all that matters). But, when you look back at the Medal of Honor games that came after Allied Assault, they never managed to reach the same level of success that AA reached. The scores on metacritic/gamerankings are lower, the sales are as well. I think when the developers defected to Activision to create IW, the MoH series was already on deathrow; Call of Duty was simply the last nail in the coffin.

Thehyph4459d ago

Ditto.

AA was possibly the best WW2 shooter until CoD came out. I would still hand it to CoD as the best WW2 shooter.

MaverickStar74459d ago

I think we could say MOH was already standing on the ledge, COD just came and pushed it off.

OldAcc4459d ago

It definitely succeeded, to the point where COD is pissing on Medal of Honor's grave.
Medal of Honor needs a proper WWII reboot.

Gamesgbkiller4459d ago

This series is dead.

The studio has joined Dice so its not likely.

coolbeans4459d ago

Well...not entirely dead, just taken out of rotation for now. Who knows what developer EA will restructure, or perhaps seek out 3rd party, in order to bring it back into rotation.

Hufandpuf4459d ago

The creators beat it's creation.

strigoi8144459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

well i still wish there was a game like Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

CJDUNCAN4459d ago

Medal of Honor really killed itself, especially the last two entries.

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.

Microsoft needs to listen or risk irreparable harm to Call of Duty

Windows Central: "The money may keep rolling in, but Microsoft is the custodian of one of the biggest selling video game series in history. If something doesn't change, I fear we'll reach a breaking point and irreparable damage will have been done."

Because ms is so good at managing studios, surely they will get it right

:P

In my view, they should probably merge MP with Warzone and essentially make it free to play like Halo Infinite. The campaign/zombies mode can be $30 yearly DLC. I know this would be insanity as most COD players essentially pay the full price of the game simply for the MP. However-with a shrinking player base they may have to consider it. Making it free would bring in a ton of players.

Profchaos51d ago

To late MW3 should have been a lesson but here we are two years later with a steaming pile a shite called blops7

Nothing lasts forever, eventually something will come along to make people forget about COD

Halo killer once arrived and technically call of duty killer also arrived, its name is Fortnite

dveio51d ago

Call of Duty was riding the revenue horse and charts for ~20 years. Whether undeserved or deserved.

But I endorse everyone to remind you that Microsoft could have decided differently when they took it over.

The money was certainly there, and they could have taken their time revamping the franchise:

Current-gen tech, manageable microtransactions, not imitating Fortnite and returning to core values of the franchise's origin.

They didn't.

Let's see next year. Hopefully without the then 13 years old PS4 and One hardware.

you need to stop saying "let see next year"

While i appreciate the gesture.... all of these retro classics have been made available everywhere else. I am hoping to see some other Activision properties make their way out of the shackles of the 5th, 6th and 7th gen. Licensing be damned... bring back the Transformers Cybertron games.

P_Bomb240d ago

Love the Cybertron games! TF games have been shit lately. Would love to see that era revisited. I even did the multiplayer!

MrBaskerville239d ago

Is the retro classics for all consoles?

Obscure_Observer240d ago

Metaphor on Gamepass just announced! O.o

Seriously, this is the best generation of Xbox ever!!!

We can´t catch a freaking break from awesome games arriving all the time!!!

Deathdeliverer240d ago

It’s a HELL of a game. If you like JRPGs in the family of Persona, you will be in heaven… that is until you hear the various battle music…. then you’ll be somewhere BEYOND heaven!

babadivad239d ago

Just finished Clair Obscur. This should be fun.
