New Xbox Live terms ask users to commit to security, agree to share data with partners

Microsoft's current terms of use, effective as of July 2013, can be read at Xbox.com. Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live TOU indicates that Microsoft can share certain personal information provided to the company, but the updated terms appear to grant the company broader use of that data

cleft54612d ago

Pretty much is the main reason I am not buying a Xbox One. If others are okay with it then good for them, but I don't care for this sort of thing.

JokesOnYou4612d ago (Edited 4612d ago )

Sorry I read that twice and it sounds like any other online social connectivity device with other partners such as netflix, twitter, facebook etc or anything else online where its part of the process to share private info to sign up. Hell if this scares you then dont dare get a account at Walmart:

"Information automatically collected when you visit or use our websites, such as via cookies and device information, and in stores, such as via video cameras."

"We may disclose your personal information to third parties under the following limited circumstances:"
http://corporate.walmart.co...

-OMG not you too Walmart!...pfft

PoSTedUP4612d ago (Edited 4612d ago )

from what i understand they (MS and all their affiliates/resellers/distribut ors) own everything you do on, and upload to, your Xbox one (or just online?) and can use any of it however they like to "without compensation to you of any kind".
even your own gameplay sessions it states... so other people have rights to your own gameplay sessions for instance? along with anything else? maybe im confused but this is pretty much what the updated version is saying.

NukaCola4612d ago

Sorry Jokes

Not walking denially blind, biased and sheeplike with you buddy. I'm a gamer who wants MS to get their act together before I support them. I get your passion but loyalty does not mean you should always agree with those you follow. A true teammate points out faults to strengthen the team. You're just playing into MS hand without question. Again maybe you're not a teammate for Xbox.....maybe you're just a pawn.

sAVAge_bEaST4612d ago (Edited 4612d ago )

@joke.SonY.ou -
who would be foolish enough to shop at wal-mart (NSA runs see something, say something ads there) -much less, create an account.

Down playing , and belittling the situation..., what else should I expect from someone like you. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Reputa...

DragonKnight4612d ago

See? Didn't I say it MULTIPLE times that MS would put their B.S. in the ToU that you agree to share your personal data with their partners? And doesn't each and every Xbox One come with an ad camera that can monitor your heartrate? I f*cking CALLED it.

NewMonday4612d ago

"sharing data such as your name, address, email address and date of birth with the partner"

and if we don't no Live account, not much of a choice

obviously MS are counting on casual consumers to be oblivious and just sign up, taking advantage of them is so low.

IMOO this is worse than 720p, redundant but mandatory Kinect, false advertising and OS/MP crash problems.

UltimateMaster4611d ago

The funny thing is.
You have to agree to the terms otherwise you don't get to play any games. Or anything at all.

Also, think about it.
They'll ask you all your information beforehand and Then you have to go and change the settings.
Meaning that they already shared your data before you could even change it.

UltimateMaster4611d ago (Edited 4611d ago )

@Jokesonyou

Information Wallmart Collect:
We collect your information from the following sources:

-Information you give us, such as during transactions, customer service operations, surveys, and website registrations,
-Information from other sources, such as companies that help us to update our records, and
-Information automatically collected when you visit or use our websites, such as via cookies and device information, and in stores, such as via video cameras.

How We Use and/or Disclose Your Information:
*****Walmart does not sell or rent your personal information.

Let me quote something for you:
http://adage.com/article/sp...
http://www.vg247.com/2013/1...

“What I think you’re asking about is an interview done earlier in the year where someone was talking about how some of the new Xbox One Kinect features *could* be used in advertising – since we can see expressions, engagement, etc. and how that might be used to target advertising. This is the point that seems to draw some controversy.

Then, why even go at an advertising convention, tell people that the kinect can collect information if they had no intentions of reselling this information?

Last time I checked, Walmart doesn't sell you cameras that would plug inside your house.
...A part from the kinect, obviously.

What privacy you had was lost when you jump on the internet sadly. If not MS sharing your privacy, its Google, Facebook, Twitter or etc doing it sadly.

xHeavYx4612d ago

Yeah, Google, Facebook, Twitter and the IFruit app from GTA have a camera that detects my emotions

zeal0us4612d ago (Edited 4612d ago )

@xHeavYx

I didn't realize people like yourself valued your emotions so highly.
-
My point is what little privacy you have is lost soon as you get on the internet and make an account with any company in this day and age. Heck maybe even the people you pay your bills to are selling your private information.

Bell two weeks ago just change their privacy policy. It will allow them to track your usage(web page visited, app usage, call pattern and etc). Not only that but they will be hitting customers with targeted advertising and they will sell that data to other companies.

http://www.michaelgeist.ca/...

I am not saying roll over and deal with it but rather more and more companies are doing the same exact thing with your private data. So be cautious of the services you use.

JokesOnYou4612d ago

i don't pay $500 dollars for Google/Facebook/twitter or etc nor do i pay them every month so i don't get your logic here, are you not paying attention that the info MS wants from you is to provide ads on the xone that really doesn't benefit you as a gamer :/ now if the xone was free MS could have fun with my info but no i'm not paying them to do it.

zeal0us4611d ago

@Dragonknight, Xsliver and confused people.

I wasn't condoning MS actions by trying to justify others are doing the same exact thing. I was just simply stating that companies are doing the same with your private data and nothing more.

From my second post you could clearly see I was not condoning it.

"I am not saying roll over and deal with it but rather more and more companies are doing the same exact thing with your private data. So be cautious of the services you use."

XboxFun4611d ago (Edited 4611d ago )

@zeal0us

Don't even bother, the article states that the information will be shared to services on the system itself. Most if not all of these posters have done something similar knowingly or unknowingly and it hasn't impacted their lives one bit.

But for some straaaaaange reason, this bit of TOS will open the flood gates of terrorism and government conspiracy. You can already see Dragon and the crew flying off the hinges with "SEE, SEE, SEE, I TOLD YOU!" (I expect a blog soon)

Also if they would have read the article it clearly states that the info is shared with apps that are on the X1/360 that a user has signed up for and pretty much have already given the SAME information to sign up with.

And more importantly there is an option to OPT out.

"SEE, SEE, SEE I TOLD YOU! Kinect can monitor your heart rate!!"

Yea, because everytime I see a coke commercial my heart skips a beat.

STFU!

The privacy sharing is related to external app and accounts you create on it. MS is nice enough to detail this unlike their competitors.

What is ironic is the information MS shares is the same information Sony lost of all their members during the PSN break, and then some extra data.

DragonKnight4612d ago

Sure it is nuke, sure it is.

Fireseed4612d ago

I'm guessing you didn't read the article.

Well same as any company who has 3rd party apps on it's platform. Oh well who is anyone kidding this is going to get blown out of proportion, misquoted, used as amunition just cause it's MS

KRUSSIDULL4612d ago

From the article:

"These features and functions include leaderboards, live-hosted gameplay, achievements, tournaments, and gamer profile sharing."

Not that bad and it also says you can turn of this. This will benefit sites like http://www.trueachievements... by able to release accurate data in real time

nosferatuzodd4612d ago

ha hear it comes i wonder what the Xbox fans have to say now about ps fanboys being paranoid we all know Microsoft would do this only blind loyalty cant see that kineck was built to do this

Silver3604612d ago

I reserve the right to curse at whomever contacts me using this information!

rainslacker4612d ago

When they contact you, just say that person(you) doesn't live there anymore, but you have their new number. Then you give them the direct non toll-free number for MS customer service.

now just why the hell would they need address and date of birth for?

-Foxtrot4612d ago

To find out where you live...and if your legal

-Foxtrot4612d ago

Oh no, not that...to play hopscotch /s

Kayant4612d ago

Well at least I can opt-out for now but I don't like the sound of this one bit.

theWB274612d ago

The sound of what? All people are seeing is Microsoft and privacy and of course it's blown out of proportion. This is standard stuff. No more than what Facebook or Google asks when you link your account to different websites. Get a grip already.

SharnOfTheDEAD4612d ago

They will use this data in advertising, i'm pretty sure this is a way of them getting information for target audiences etc

theWB274612d ago

@SharnOfTheDeaD
You mean the couple of tiles they use for ads or when they target games and movies your way? Both big companies are doing the latter.

hazardman4612d ago

Who here has an android? I can tell you right now that almost every app you download does the same shit! If you dont agree you cant dll app. Its f@ck up! Face it people there is no more privacy, Stop living in lala land

SharnOfTheDEAD4612d ago

Advertising isn't just going to be on a few tiles on a console, this will be linked to your phone, tablet, apps, email and home addresses, so no..it's not just a few tiles. There's both negatives and positives to this though.

falviousuk4612d ago

Its N4G, its trying to paint the xbox in a negative light. Voila, instant recipe for N4G posting.

And yes pretty much standard T&C's Sony's will be along the same lines, will we see that posted up on here, doubt it.

torchic4612d ago

whenever I read a post of yours, you're complaining about N4G.

you are not obligated to visit this site btw, you can visit more Xbox-centric sites if you think this place is so pro-PS4.

I just don't get how you complain about it all the time yet you keep coming back for more.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio46d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing45d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9246d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit45d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing45d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9245d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay47d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn248d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn247d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown48d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay47d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay47d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac47d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger48d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300048d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde48d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde47d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_47d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
