Has Kojima ever been entirely satisfied with one of his games? I remember watching the first ever debut trailer back in TGS 2006. It looked SO amazing, it was just incredible. The game looked like it was going to blow everything else away on both a technical and design aspect. I can see what Kojima means when he says he had an amazing vision for what the game was gonna look like originally, when you look at the early trailers and tech demos. It seems like, going off the latest trailers, that the game has been substantially downgraded from those first trailers that we saw way back then.

Yet we have the same kind of media blackout that the other games had.

Anyone notice yet we haven't seen anything we weren't supposed to see? Even new screenshots are just the same shots from trailers or something. No team keeps stuff secret like Kojima's team.

the reporter didn't ask him if he thought the 360 would have been able to do better. I think that's what the point of this article is - to put doubt on the PS3.

Artists are never completly satisfied with their work.
They also always say how their work is never complete. I think that's what Kojima is feeling.

He's opening himself for a sequel he did this 5 other times, and every time it led to a sequel, mark my words, Metal Gear Solid 5.

He better be disappointed with MGS4 and with all his future games....

I am really suprised by this. He isn't directly Sh!tting on the PS3, but he still isn't very kind. He says they pushed the Cell to the limit. Thats kind of crazy. I mean the PS3 is still very new and Kojima is certanly no slouch of a developer. I am still going to get the game and play the pants off of it, but I am really blown away by this. Did you people read the article? Did you read all the things he said about that super computer of yours? Sounds like he would of rather made the game on the 360. He was even fooled by sony (like the rest of you) abot how the ps3 is all mighty, and now realizes sony lied.
Did you say the graphics are better than anything the 360 can do? Get a clue. your ps3 is no more powerful than my 360. The hardware is a bit more reliable though, I'll give you that. My 360 has never failed though.

Windows can use 100% of the CPU, doesn't mean it's optimized for it.

ya know what? ofc it doesn't meet his standards. wanna know why? because kojima is a freakin genius that's why. he always wants more than what the console he's working on can provide (there ARE limits ya know to ps3 and 360, as were with other consoles in the past). still let us not jump ahead of ourselves since ps3 has been out for 1year and a half. everyone knows that IF mgs5 comes out...it will play/look/sound better than 4. it's just the way things go. developers code and the system runs it. then they code some more games for the system. "hey if we do this differently we can make it run faster/put more stuff/whatever". remember snes? nes? master system? genesis? remember ps2? ps1? n64? gc? xbox/360? as a matter of fact there are only 2 types of statements when developers come out talking about console power. 1-our game reaches whatever 10% of the system or 2-our games uses 100% of the system. neither are right, since that perfomance is relative to the code that is running on it and the tools that are used to measure/enhance perfomance are being constantly updated to give better performance.
i honestly hope no one is really canceling their pre-order because of what kojima said because rest assured, mgs4 (imo) will probably be the game of 08 (but hey i'm just a diehard metal gear fan).

I'm pretty disappointed too. I should've been one the lucky 16 to test this game out. I would saw off one of my toes with a worn out rusted blade to play this game 2 months before release. ;)

I was being criticised and dismissed for making similar points with my threads and posts on PS3 Forums - the game has had visual downgrades in comparison to the TGS2005 footage. That's not to criticise the game because it looks great already, I was just stating that point before I was flanked by the defence force a.k.a. the inability to see anything negative in major PS3 titles that some members here experience from. My disappointment however, in regards to the graphics, is that it looks more saturated

Obviously now after saying all the things he said it shouldn't be a surprise to hear him say this. They used cell to its limit which i think is amazing this game probably has more animation than the best five xbox1.5 games put together.

Think clearly these people used the most powerful machine to this date to its limit there is no hardware more powerful than ps3 at the moment. The cell bridges the gap between any other processor its a super computer and he says they used its full potential haha i can't wait to play this game. I am looking forward to realistic cut scenes and animation not something like a overly textured character models that move like last generation which only xbox1.5 can do that is gears of war 2 ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh bet you didn't like that tobad.

ps3 cant keep up with the xbox 360 in frame rate , smoothness,textures, and it takes a fricken long time to make a game on the ps3 , compared to the ease of the 360.
i feel sorry for the bloke , all that effort for a 7-8/10 game.

Well I'm glad to hear the end of all that "The PS3 is limitless" crap. There is no doubt that the PS3 is powerful, no one can deny that. But Sony, once again, over promised on what the system can do and so many people bought into that again. Just like the emotion engine on the ps2. Guys, its a great system and so is the 360. They both powerful systems with the ps3 just edging it out. Not the blowout like everyone falsely wants to proclaim. I'm glad Kojima put things into perspective finally for everyone.

Real translation...We fell in the hype trap of the three stooges, Ken, Phil and kaz. I can't do anything about ken since he split the moment he saw the pos3 can't handle games properly. 3 years back we were told we can make toystory 2 looking games, now all i can create is ps2 looking game with slightly better gameplay due to ps2.5 hardware. ANyway, i shudnt be bothered since blind sony bats who actually bought the ps3 for games will only pick up 2million copies. Rest of the people will watch BD movies on it.

This is both refreshing and increasing my anxiousness for this game at the same time. I kind of doubt that they've reached the limits of the PS3 with this game. For those of you old enough...please think back to EVERY game you can remember for any system that has claimed to max out the capacity of the system (set the bar of what can be done). ONLY to find that later another developer sees that bar and leaps right over it as if its barely off the ground.

While I don't doubt his genuineness about feeling like he wanted more or to accomplish more with this game he's got a habit of being too emotional about this type of thing. He needs to sit down with a video retrospective of all his games, have a coke and a smile then lighten up.

That's just my opinion. What ever they create, they always see something "missing" after that finished stage. The man is being hard on himself. I understand from his point of view and respect his feelings of being a "artist". The Metal Gear series is a "priceless" piece of work in gaming industry.

Game-play wise this game sticks to the formula. It is a long standing franchise that have built on every game but has not strayed much from the formula.

I see people comparing this type of graphics to gears and they are not the same type of game. Gears is close quartered combat where the they really pump in the visuals, unlike MGS. Gears will look Better per square inch. IMO.

This game will sell pretty well but looking at the past sales of the game in relations to the user-base, this might put a little damper on the reviews. If the creator is not satisfied, I think it will trickle down to the review sites. Look as to why, and they will find something.

Hideo Kojima is known to be one of the masterful creators that has propelled the good name of PlayStation into the household name that it is today. With that said, he's never been "satisfied" with each creation of Metal Gear Solid. For Mr. Kojima to create the game of his fullest vision, he will need to still be alive when technology is in it's peak in the year 2050.

The best way to look at it is like this. The difference from Metal Gear Solid 2 to Metal Gear Solid 3 is phenomenal in all aspects. Both games being developed on the same platform. Hideo Kojima's vision has always been on an unrealistic grand scale. Dark Sniper's reason behind this statement can be seen by playing Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake on MSX. That game alone is STILL ahead of it's time.

Food for thought:

Kojima was not satisfied with Metal Gear Solid 1, do you think it would have been a better product on Sega Saturn or Nintendo 64? Saturn did not have the graphical structure to produce the full scale 3D vision he had. Only the unreleased Shenmue came close. Nintendo 64 would have been perfect for graphical purposes, but all of the cutscenes and dialogue would not have fit into the cartridge.

Kojima was not satisfied with Metal Gear Solid 2, it got ported to the XBOX. Only to have it's exclusive features back on the Playstation 2 where it recieved superior sales and critical appreciation.

Dark Sniper would like you to raise your hand if you truly think Kojima's vision can be fully realized on Xbox 360. With the inferior hardware structure, disc limitation and etc. it's preposterous to think that Metal Gear Solid would actually be taken seriously on Xbox 360.

Dont worry, there's hope for Splinter Cell. The developers of that game seem to be "proud" of their accomplishments. Same with Bungie being "proud" of the underachieving Halo 3.

Well I really appreciate Kojima San. He is a perfectionist. Still believes that can achieve the unachievable even in this age. PS3 will turn 2 this Nov. and even thats no in all region. What do he expect to release the end all game just in the infancy of the console. Its simply not possible. Although MGS4 looks stunningly beautiful but we will see a huge leap when 4 years from now we will be comparing the game of PS3 first gen and 5 gen. Remember they allowed developers to overclock the PS2 processor in its later stages and we saw games like God of War 1 & 2, same will happen with PS3. Just imagine the PS3 cell processor being over clocked:P

There is no denying that this interview and i am sure he will repeat this before game comes out, hurt PS3. It can be translation but he is basically bashing on PS3. I think this is mistake, even if true, because sales of his game might suffer. I mean what kind of attitude is that you go around sell your product and when people ask you what you think, you say "I am disappointed by it!"?!

If Kojimas vision was too big for the ps3 what makes you think it isnt for 360? Oh but teh ComPressionz! Compressing 50g of space down to fit a dvd would result in a lot of loss content. This game was built from concept on up with the playstation 3 in mind. You can wave specs around all day, but in the end it wasnt built for 360. Kojima isnt the only developer whos had to make sacrifices because his vision was too big.

Honestly I think this is Kojima being a perfectionist. If you watch the game so far and it's beautiful and probably the best thing we've seen this generation aside of GT5 that is out now. Kojima is asking something that is very unrealistic for this generation and for a possibly the next. I think Kojima is having a vision to the point where the difference between a game and real life is skewed. But this is only a positive comment because it shows that he is never satisfied which shows he is always thinking about how to one up himself and anything else out there.

The day a good dev is completely satisfied with his/her games is the day we should stop playing games and the sh!t about using Cell to the limit it'll take another MGS game to show the limit of Cell and PS3. Sure we all want bigger maps, better character animations and destructible environments, but the thing is with every next-gen we get we'll be promised to get this but in the end non of the machines are up to the job not PS2 and Xbox, PS3 and 360, neither Xbox720 and PS4 will live up to the promises

this is very funny article actually, why on earth would a game developer say such a thing, and to be so confident in it. Which one is it, MGS 4 sucks or not? I hope that theres few people who are going to read it! Kojima is taking it really seriously, he needs break (some time out). I will definetaly buy this game, because i havent played any other mgs game. i know i have missed some very über games.

But the reality it's not more powerful than XBOX 360 like it's hyped to be. It's about the same thing.

Nothing wrong with that, I just say it again, that's why the PS3 needs to cost the same as XBOX 360 worldwide to complete. There is no reason for PS3 to cost more in Europe and no reason for them to cost $50 more in the US with the Premuim 360 at $350 and 40GB PS3 at $399.

PS3 charging extra for what? Again it was a sad day, the day Sony got the Idea of Blu ray. Using the playstation brand to push Blu ray, technology that will probably become useless in a few years anyway.

The solution is price cuts, that's what has gotten them somewhat in the game again, and we all know that PS3 started going better with the 399 Sku and pric cut in Europe. It's obvious that PS3 and 360 are neck and neck and it's a price war.

Whenever I read an article like this one, depicting its director's afterthoughts; its closure. Why? When a game is complete, and the main director gives you insight in what a system is capable of. But when fan-ism gets a hold of it, its almost as if their reading from a bible.

So much has changed since the 2D days, we're pushing ideas many of used to play with action figures; re-enacting fights in our imagination. And I can't disagree with Kojima, if a game feels undone, then its that way. With so many years in production, and actually hitting a systems weak points; that takes a lot of strength to admit. When you look through some of your gaming mags, how many directors admit "our title had a ton of potential, but we just couldn't fit everything we wanted into the game". We're actually beginning to see that more & more each console. Wonder if there will be a moment, where a game makes its developing team actually have closure.

I'm sure MGS4 will be exceptional to all those wanting another game in this series but the article clearly shows that Kojima had bigger plans from the PS3 hardware.Graphically it will be very nice i'm sure but for Kojima to openly addmit his unhappiness at the standard of visuals means it will unlikely represent some of the best visuals on this machine.

He mentions how he has achieved just the 1 fold increase of his original 10x ambiton and that to me is a game less than it was planned to be.

I'm not slagging PS3 here but some of you guys need to stop kidding yourself that Kojima is actually saying something entirely different in this interview.
