Rumor: Microsoft’s Cloud based streaming service is called “Rio”

Reports emerged earlier of Microsoft showing their cloud based streaming service to a press during one of their event. They were demoing Halo 4 on a low-end Windows Phone. Further rumors have now emerged and are now calling the service’s name as “Rio”.

MS are the kings of cheesy names..

@loulou
i'm sorry but between xbox one, zune, surface and now Rio they dont go far to find names.

And remember the slogan for xbox one at E3?
"All for One, Input ONE"
aweful!

loulou4606d ago (Edited 4606d ago )

abzdine it gives you demented sony fanboys something to talk about though...

i dont play names. i cant wait to see what both sony and ms have for streaming

yawn... give it up. who honestly gives a shit about a name other than the droids?? who plays or uses a name?

awful sans e baltringue

DOMination-4606d ago

Because ps1, 2, 3, 4 all very original names.

nick3094606d ago

Nah, you wouldve hated any name it wouldve been called. You hate xbox and love playstation.. I love both and will buy whatever i like without you trolling in every xbox article, so will other people.

Deadpoolio4606d ago

But wait what happened to the end of the world? I thought it was going to be the 29th when the NDA expired and we were going to hear all about that non existent second GPU that was buried deep in the One80.....Supposedly anyone buying a PS4 was going to cry and be so jealous.....Oooops Oh well Guess it's just another conspiracy theory shot to hell

BlackTar1874606d ago

LOL Dead Poolio that one guys blog i need a link too. That is some crazy set of people he caters too. I really forgot abotu the NDA thing lol.

XB1_PS44606d ago

@deadpoolio Although I didn't believe it. I'm not gonna lie, and say I didn't come on to N4G today hoping for something from MS to stir this war up.

christocolus4606d ago

@abdzine
do you always have to troll?...leave if you have nothing positive or mature to add...

By the way i actually like the name rio and this is big news.ms is really spending big on their online service..They were smart not to buy onlive back then...instead they gave an open invitation to the employees of onlive who were interestd in working with them...being that this is theirs,it will be built and customized from the ground up to take advantage of their hardware and software specifications ....nice

aviator1894606d ago

@abzdine

It amazes me how you have 7 bubbles with comments like that..

Maybe instead of focusing so much on what name ms are rumored to give their service, perhaps it'd be more constructive to actually talk about the service, no?

Honestly, I feel that if ms can get xbox games streamed onto smartphones and pc's with their service, that'd be really cool and convenient.

Bathyj4605d ago

Yeah, but its not like Vita or Gai Kai are good names. Still, anythings better than Wii and Wii U.

H0RSE4605d ago

MS console names:

Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One

Sony console names:

Playstation
Playstation 2
Playstation 3
Playstation 4

if MS doesn't go far to find names, Sony doesn't even leave the couch...

Animal Mutha 764605d ago

The guy on the Sony stand at Eurogamer kept saying 'it's fun to Play Station' as people got to the front of the queue.

I wanted to hit him. I just told him it was fun to queue for an hour to then be told I could only play 2 games because of the stupid ticket system that Sony were using.

No, what's ridiculous is the way you Sony fans never miss a chance to troll.

The name is fine.

lol and look whos here. complete with a fourth bubble. if ever you needed proof that n4g is dead, then it would be gaelic getting another bubble, and abzdines 7.

PimpDaddy4606d ago

This website is overrun by Playstation Polesmokers. The fact this troll has 4 bubbles is further proof the moderators are either absent, biased towards Sony, or just downright incompetent. Feel free to take another bubble!!!

falviousuk4606d ago

yes, yet another sony troll, and this one tries to convince you he isnt and only attack MS due to they way they conduct business. So exactly why are you trying to mock the name RIO in here now, oh yes, your just another sony troll, one of many many many on here.

did you mock the name vita when it was announced, i can probably guess no at that as its a sony product so its fine.

Troll off and leave the gaming discussion to the real gamers

vigilante_man4605d ago

There only 2 reasons they picked this name:

Next Olympics = in RIO
Next Football World Cup = In Brazil with final in RIO

They are just using what they consider will be a popular brand name. I actually think they are right. Rio will be mentioned all across the globe over the next 3 years as much as any city in the world.

Did they just get a name right?

Im telling you all 3 are using the same guy to come up with these names, its like spirit Fingers! Lol

Sega was great with names, the good ol days....

Pogmathoin4605d ago

To be this good will take SEGA AGES..... People uptight over a name, but if PS4 was named Sony hemroids, these people would call it 'unique' or 'different'

Forgive my spelling too...

Gekko364605d ago (Edited 4605d ago )

@Ps4Beiber... sorry couldnt help myself

Vita sounds like a breakfast biscuit bar. Bluray sounds like a smurf thats a dab hand at the piano.

Point is you coiuld call it Xbox Bulge or Xbox Crevice or even Praystation "House, then Man Kicking, then Fish" (what ever the number 4 is in Japanese).

The point it no one would care, they'd get used to it.

Take floppy disks in the early 90's ,they were floppy disks cos they could bend, then came 3.5inch disks, and they didn't bend, we still called em floppy disks cos the alternative was to call em stiffy disks.... in the UK that was a No No, since Stiffy means erection.

We still laugh at americans and thier use of the word "Fanny" as Bum / Butt, where as here it means "Vagina".

Names are serious in one country and a laughing stock in the next.

So give them a break... it must be very difficult.

Pogmathoin4605d ago

Yeah, living in Canada now, the meaning morning stiffy goes unnoticed... Not the funny guy I used to be....

So because Sony have a cloud service with a cool name, Gakai, Microsoft decided to give their cloud service a name? Why are they so reactionary to whatever Sony does? This is why they have already made so many mistakes with the new generation because they haven't got their own dance, instead they are dancing to Sony's tune.

Microsoft are taking everything I love about the 360 and flushing it down the toilet.

PimpDaddy4606d ago

Are you serious? Who said Gaikai is a cool name? You're assuming they are naming their service because of something Sony did? Would you rather them call it "Microsoft Cloud Game Streaming Service"???

Ya. Let's all jump ship from XBox because they want to assign a name to a service they are trying to promote /s

buynit4606d ago

I would think it needs a name, i mean....

Never mind its useless.

aviator1894606d ago (Edited 4606d ago )

You do realize that microsoft have had already invested billions of dollars into their cloud services before sony even got involved, right? Sony merely bought an established company and built on it. Microsoft has created the service wholly in-house and dates years back. It was just a matter of the two companies deciding when to reveal their two respective services.

And microsoft's service will apparently stream your xbox games to your smartphones and pc's, which could potentially open up the streaming to the more general population with devices that they most likely already have and don't have to go out and spend extra cash to experience the service.

For those of you who are disagreeing with me, tell me, what part of my statement is false?

@Cloudyday71

Wait, so you're bashing microsoft because they've given their service a code-name? What company doesn't do that? Companies name their respective services so that they can better differentiate that service from all the other services the company possesses. How in the world is giving a service a name 'reactionary?' And how do you define a name as being either 'cool' or 'uncool?' That part is completely subjective.

solidboss074606d ago

Sony inherited that name from their partners, a name already recognised as the best in the business of internet streaming. Why waste time and resources in changing the identity of something already so well known at this early stage?
It is what it is, move on.
Microsoft on the other hand put out crap about cloud doing this and that, nothing else to talk about, certainly not console performance. Ha ha, fucking hilarious, eh.

falviousuk4606d ago

You mean the service that Sony bought rather than creating for itself. And is a poor cousin to onlive, which is a far better game streaming service

Cloudyday714606d ago

@aviator189 I never said Microsoft never had cloud services. They actually have cloud services with the 360 (the backbone of Xbox Live). But just because Sony have a cloud service with a cool (I was being ironic) name now Microsoft have to copy them.

It's shameful how the leaders of the current generation are now dancing to Sony's tune. "Dance Xbone DANCE!"

kayoss4606d ago

I thought Microsoft cloud service was called "Azure"? Which to me sounds better than Rio.

XboxFun4605d ago

So no one can have a name for anything because another person has a name for it?

Great logic you have there.

I guess no one from this point on should name anything that they actually create because it will mimic what another person has done and named.

You sony fans really are the biggest joke in gaming. You don't even seem like you like gaming, it's more about cheerleading behind a multi-billion dollar company. Que lastima! Es patetico.

kayoss4605d ago

Hahaha the biggest irony statement on this site.@starchild said "Sony fans really are the biggest joke...cheerleading behind a multi-billion dollar company." What you think Microsoft is? It's not a mom and pop business. If you're going to make a comment and bash others at least make sure you don't make yourself sound stupid.

Lalanana4606d ago

Cool i guess. Not that i care about names.

IanVanCheese4606d ago

Would have preferred The Cartographer myself.

corvusmd4606d ago

That would have been cool..Cartographer or even Cortana.

IanVanCheese4606d ago

they're calling their version of Siri Cortana,

mhunterjr4606d ago

Allegedly Cortana is the codename for the Siri like virtual assistant they are developing for Windows and xbox, i hope the name sticks.

AngelicIceDiamond4606d ago

I read this several days ago.

Sounds cool I wonder if MS will officially go full force with this.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio11d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn214d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn213d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown13d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay13d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac13d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger13d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300013d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde13d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde13d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_12d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
