Killzone Shadow Fall Multiplayer Will Have Dedicated Servers

Boltjes confirmed that Shadow Fall will have dedicated servers. However, the servers will only act as a hub between different game clients and any game logic will not be hosted on the servers. “Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4,” stated Boltjes, “with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality.”

Majin-vegeta4609d ago (Edited 4609d ago )

Lol is anyone surprised??Dedi servers have always been on SOny games.

Edit:And all with out teh power of tehz cloud.

@Ape
but X1's cloud will allow developers that doesn't have them to have them in thier games, which means 90% of games will have them on X1.

Oh I'm sorry i Didn't know Sony had detailed what kind of servers all the games on PSN would run on /S.

We still don't knoe.Hell they could probably be using them hence the charge for online.

"And all with out teh power of tehz cloud"

yes KZ always had them deds but X1's cloud will allow developers that doesn't have them to have them in thier games, which means 90% of games will have them on X1

but anyways KZ SF looks freakin awesome, let's all just enjoy this wonderful piece of gaming

AceBlazer134609d ago

Isn't it only for those who wanna pay for them? How did you get 90% from that?

scott1824608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

Look into sony's new cloud solution with openstack..... worldwide servers for games...
Sony wont just have Gaikai, that is for game streaming, openstack for dedicated servers.
Agreed that Killzone sf looks awesome.

grassyknoll4608d ago

If games have dedicated servers on the Xbox One, they will on PS4. Developers are not gonna make 2 or more sets of netcode.

Blaze9294608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

@AceBlazer13

"Isn't it only for those who wanna pay for them? How did you get 90% from that?"

http://www.wired.com/gadget...

"dedicated servers for 'every' multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32."

@grassyknoll

"If games have dedicated servers on the Xbox One, they will on PS4. Developers are not gonna make 2 or more sets of netcode."

And who is supposed to take care of the costs on having dedicated servers on PS4 vs Microsoft's 300,000 worldwide dedicated servers? That same developer? Please

MysticStrummer4608d ago

@Blaze - It's not guaranteed for every One game. MS will be making their 300k virtual servers available at cheap rates, so many games will use them, but some of the bigger players have their own servers, EA for example.

ShinMaster4608d ago

LOL @ people who think it's 300,000 physical servers instead of virtual servers.

@Majin you didn't read it.

"Boltjes confirmed that Shadow Fall will have dedicated servers.

So its not traditional dedicated servers (gameplay wise) but its being used to run things like mission/ scoring. System game clients.

I don't think it matters the game will still run very smoothly from the sounds of it.

HammadTheBeast4608d ago

It's the other way around. The "session master" part is the player hosted part, the actually game is done through dedicated servers/PS4 itself.

Blaze9294608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

@Majin I can tell you didn't read anything but the title.

"Dedi servers have always been on SOny games."

Yeah, like Uncharted 2?

This is not dedicated servers and a lot of people are about to be misled...because I imagine like you Majin, they can't read past the title.

lol its sad, it literally follows up right in the description. But that's just tooo much text to comprehend.

Tctczach4608d ago

Haha. "Dedi" servers on Sony games. Ha

Hicken4608d ago

Misleading? Like that link you posted before that doesn't even speak about how the dedicated servers are offered at a discount? That link on an article from May, when Microsoft has done its clarification routine since?

You know what happens when you do a Google search for "Xbox One dedicated servers?" It's all about Call of Duty: Ghosts. If it were a given that EVERY game would have dedicated servers, why in the hell would there be a need to single out Call of Duty or any other game?

Talk about comprehension.

AngelicIceDiamond4608d ago

@Hicken Its really not hard to understand why COD pops up when you type in X1 dedicated servers.

Fans have been wanting and pleading the COD devs to develop DS. Now that X1 supports DS for COD, that's the most talked about and searched thing on Google regarding the subject.

Seeing how for several years COD is notorious for not supporting DS after all these years while its main competitor BF series always had.

I know you can bring better logic than that.

HeavenlySnipes4608d ago

Naughty Dog chose not to

They said that "they wanted the games online to run ass long as people wanted to play it" and Sony shuts down servers for games with very very few users online

I don't know why though, I'd imagine a healthy amount of people still play it, and even a game like Resistance 2 only has a couple hundred playing worldwide and its servers are still up lol

So is COD the ONLY game without them now ?

Dedicated servers give Killzone and Battlefield a huge advantage in terms of replay value and tinkering the game to your liking.

Tctczach4608d ago

@ Hicken
If you had the one of the most popular items in the world and had a feature that made it better wouldn't you want to point it out?

Talk about no comprehension of marketing..

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

Will Ryse have dedi servers?? lol Bet knowone cares..

Killzone & infamous has me more excited than BF4!! Still want bf4 later though..

Rimeskeem4608d ago

So xbox fanboys mad now that you dont have that all to yourselves

Ps4Console4608d ago

- Every Xbox Fanboy

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

On a serious note, this is very good, as it shows that Sony has some cloud power of their own. Throws some serious doubt on big-name FPS games like Call of Duty and TitanFall only having dedicated servers because of THE CLOUD.

But hey, who's counting?

Dropdeadll4607d ago

Not true. Only few PS3 games have them. BTW Killzone SF isn't using the servers for combat it's still p2p like the other Killzone's.

This is how it's going to be: https://twitter.com/killzon...

Majin Uchiha4609d ago

There being very misleading with calling what there doing "dedicated servers". From what i understand it's still p2p

iiwii4607d ago (Edited 4607d ago )

Which means I've just changed my mind about getting it at launch. No P2P for me. And it this trend continues with no real dedicated servers for PS4, I may start to look at canceling my PS4 preorder.

Sony better wake up and start to make some noise in this area and let their community know that they are working to get dedicated servers for the PS4 multiplayer games, because so far they have almost been deathly silent about it.

I refuse to do another generation of P2P and getting stuck (lagged to death) having ANY part of my system used to host the game.

SlavisH24608d ago

Lol you got disagrees for reading the article. This is not dedicated servers!

Chaotic_Lament4608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

"Killzone Shadow Fall has dedicated servers hosted in various regions around the world. These servers do not run the logic of the game – they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game.

Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality."

It's confusing. But that doesn't sound like dedicated servers. That sounds like P2P.

STANK084608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

Because it P2P or hybrid (dedicated/P2P) as GG once stated. but hey, don't tell anyone. I don't get these weird "All Sony exclusive games run a dedicated servers" comments . Thats a lie and not the case. People see the word dedicated and run with it.

HeavenlySnipes4608d ago

It makes perfect sense and this method was probably used in KZ2 as well because you'd notice the things listed as happen in game

For instance, instead of having every one connect to a session master like in COD, whose console handles everything (damage, movement etc) each individual uploads that data to the server from their console. Why is that better?

For one, this means that if YOUR connection is bad, only YOU will suffer for it. In KZ2 you'd see some players standing still or shooting the wrong direction etc.. because their connection is trash. Unlike a regular P2P game like COD where everyone would be skipping around if the host happens to have bad internet or they start lagging.

The session master's only role is too upload the game stats and scores as well. Since they have the best connection to the server, they will have the most current stats and gamerscore available on their console.

whether or not you want to call it a dedicated server, the Killzone games ran excellently online because of how the networking was set up

King-Prodigy-X4609d ago

Killzone Shadow Fall Multiplayer is going to be awesome.

superterabyte4608d ago

If it is anything like killzone mercenary's multiplayer then it sure will be.

Brazz4609d ago (Edited 4609d ago )

But, but, but... only whit the power of the "CLOuDZZZZZZ" and whit X1 this is possible!!!

bumnut4608d ago

You act like dedicated servers are a new invention, are you 9?

scott1824608d ago

I think he said that because people made it sound like Microsoft is the only company that will have them or have them on a large scale. When in fact that is not true.

DeadManIV4608d ago

People just made it sound like, because devs have access to "the cloud", dedicated servers only exist on the xbone - when sony has had a bunch of ps3 games with dedicated servers so wtf?

cell9894608d ago

well xbone fans do act like dedicated servers are a new thing, when PS3 has been enjoying that for years

Brazz4608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

the 3 guys above me understand my intention, unfortunately u do not, but I can be more direct to you.
Dedicated Servers is not something exclusive to microsoft "dedicated servers", this whole "cloud" and "300,000 dedicated server" is bullshit coming from microsoft!
I can even accept the fact that the azure exceeds Gaikai, but not the way the media presents and microsoft, as "only on xbox u find dedicated servers."
Clear enough for u my sweet?

edit: plus, ya are offtopic!

Brazz4608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

on topic: good thing That killzone "dedicated servers" are appearing and showing that "dedicated servers" are not exclusive things from microsoft or something that is only possible in the Azure cloud environment. It's something good for the IP and good for sony in general, shows that it can bring cutting edge services.

Off Topic: reply to comment without lifting anything related to the topic, in this case, "Killzone Multiplayer Will Have Dedicated Servers". my initial comment is connected to the dedicated severs that Shadowfall will have, proving that this sort of thing is not exclusive to microsoft X1. Yours, on the other hand, aims only to attack me. understand?

bumnut4608d ago

Not sure how you get all of that from

"But, but, but... only whit the power of the "CLOuDZZZZZZ" and whit X1 this is possible!!!

Eat this microsoft!"

And you say my comments only aim was to attack?

SlavisH24608d ago (Edited 4608d ago )

at least its something but its sound like servers are limited. Anyway i will see in a month

Raven7224608d ago

It's not dedicated but it's not completely P2P, either. The server will select the player with the best connection as the host but will assist when needed to help make sure that someone with a lousy connection doesn't mess things up for everyone playing. The host player won't have any power over anyone else. It's just their console being used as the focal point. As long as this is a type of oversight system, there shouldn't be any issues if the host quits or suddenly experiences nasty lag. The network should be able to swiftly reassign a new host. That's as I have come to understand it from other articles I've read on this.

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT558d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus558d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius558d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro565d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken565d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown565d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72565d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken565d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya565d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast565d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood565d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer908d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138908d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga908d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

908d ago
Notellin907d ago (Edited 907d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem908d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos908d ago (Edited 908d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor908d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies907d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim907d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese907d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto907d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic908d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld908d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie908d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77908d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231907d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein908d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.
