Valve's Controller Has Been Tested. Here Are Some Impressions.

Kotaku: Game creators who have tried Valve's unusual new game controller tell Kotaku that the device holds a lot of promise. But make no mistake, they also say it feels pretty different from what we're used to.

elhebbo164673d ago

Im dying to know how it feels/plays out.

elhebbo164673d ago

wow whats with all the dislikes? I didnt say Its better than other controllers, just curios to see how it feels jeez -_-

bumnut4673d ago

Doesn't matter, Sony fanboys will disagree just because it is for PC.

I_am_Batman4673d ago

You said you are dying to know how it feels. Maybe some people aren't as curious or hyped for that as you are and therefore are free to disagree with your statement. What's the problem with getting disagrees anyway? It's not like you're losing bubbles for getting disagrees.

@bumnut: What does that have to do with Sony fanboys?

creized14673d ago

@bumnut

Sony Fanboy here and i liked his post.
Your point?

Blacktric4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

"what's with all the dislikes?"

Dislikes you got do not mean people hate your guts. Stop throwing hissy fits over imaginary negative votes to your comment.

Syntax-Error4673d ago

@elhebbo16 - This site is riddled with Sony fanboys and immature geeks. they will disagree with anything just because the option is there. Most sites don't even have a disagree button, because if you disagree with it you post a comment to why. Most of the people here are bubble whores to begin with, so if you say something positive about SONY you'll bubble up in no time.

Silly gameAr4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

@bumnut

I usually see PC fanboys in console articles spouting negative crap, not the other way around.

But, according to a lot of these dingbats, if you prefer the PS4, then you obviously hate everything else that doesn't start with a P and end with a 4

Never saw so much crying about something that means jack s*** in my life. You guys need to grow some thick skin or ignore the things to hurt your little feelings like the big boys do.

starchild4673d ago

You don't understand because you are a Sony fanboy. You don't understand how other people feel.

Whether a PC fan, Nintendo fan or Xbox fan...we all have to deal with the overwhelming bias of the rabid Sony fanbase that exists on the internet and basically makes any real discussion about games difficult if not impossible.

I'm a PC fan and haven't owned a Nintendo console since the N64 and don't plan to own an XB1, but I sympathize with fans of those consoles because I see what they have to put up with all the time.

If you guys want to change that perception about yourselves you could start by changing your behavior. Don't flood into an article about another platform in the hundreds and spit nothing but venom and negativity, all the while making stupid jokes about other gamers and laughing and bubbling each other up.

The bubble system on this site is a mistake anyway. All it ends up being is a way for the majority to censor the views of people in the minority.

BitbyDeath4673d ago

bumnut marked down for being immature.
You are what is wrong with the site, go away.

sardaukarghola664673d ago

Maybe it's because they don't believe you are actually dying which is silly because we are all dying.

Sono4214673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

I'm not understanding the Sony fanboy hate...

You make it sound like it's a bad thing to be a Sony fanboy? Im sorry but they can't help but be Sony fanboys with the PS4 launch just around the corner, it's going to be an amazing console. Right now is the best time to be a Sony fanboy.. but a Microsoft fanboy... not so much.

If your upset about the large numbers of them well then blame Microsoft for not leveling the playing field more and making this easy on Sony. Now hopefully with the steam box things will get a little more competitive because I know that I for one am getting a steam box and I already have the PS4 paid off... It is going to be an amazing next gen! :D

ShinMaster4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

@ starchild

We PlayStation fans have to deal with the overwhelming bias of the rabid Xbox sympathizing PC fanboys(as well as the non-Xbox sympathizing) that exist on the internet and basically makes any real discussion about games difficult if not impossible.

I'm a PS and Nintendo fan and haven't owned an Xbox console since the original and don't plan to spend money upgrading my PC or building one from scratch.
I actually sympathize with fans of any console when I see all the negativity we have to put up with all the time with redundant and biased comments against consoles from the PC elite regarding specs every single console generation.

If you guys want to change that perception about yourselves you could start by changing your behavior. Don't flood into an article about consoles in the hundreds and spit nothing but venom and negativity, all the while making stupid jokes about console gamers and laughing and bubbling each other up.

P.S.
You're a hypocrite. And the fact that you're singling out a group of fans to attack, proves you're a pretty big fanboy as well. You've always been.

bumnut4673d ago

@BitbyDeath

Yes my comment was immature, im not going to dispute that.

However, it was also true

Its different so I guess its a given people will dislike it without trying. Also curious to try this new controller.

badz1494673d ago

can't believe what I'm reading.

pc gamers suddenly embracing the idea of using gamepads??

RAYMEISTER4673d ago

Well Valve is saying it will work w/ all games even those w/o controller support and work as well as keyboard and mouse; so if those claims hold true what's there not to like?

elhebbo164673d ago

im not a PC gamer, currently im on PS3 but plan to expand my gaming needs with a PC and a PS4 in the near future.

MadLad4673d ago

I'm a PC gamer and I use gamepad for a lot of things. Since when were PC gamers "against" gamepads? Owning a 360 pad, or whichever controller you lean towards, is basically a necessity.
The only ones who won't admit it does offer a better experience for certain genres are just being silly.
That said, this is an entirely new type of controller that, supposedly, will offer a greater level of accuracy and responsiveness than what is currently on the market. That is something to be cautiously optimistic about.

Modestmex4673d ago

Pc gamer here i personally use gamepads for errthang except when i play online cuz controllers are useless online yo ass is gonna get raped too.

jollygoodchap84673d ago

I enjoy using my 360 controller on my PC lying back on my couch playing on my big flatscreen...oh wait nevermind we're all crouched over behind a small monitor.

Ragthorn4673d ago

Were not suddenly embracing the idea, I have been using a 360 controller for around 4 years. I love using gamepads for stuff that dont need precision, and twitch-like reflexes. I am particularly interested to see how the Steam Controller will do.
@jollygoodchap8
You obviously don't know what a HDMI cable is... Still thinks we live in the 90s.

starchild4673d ago

I think having the option to use a gamepad or keyboard & mouse is a good thing. I personally think each is good for certain types of games.

If this controller manages to combine some of the best things about each form of control then it will be amazing. The haptic feedback sounds especially promising.

dredgewalker4673d ago

Eh? I've been using a gamepad since 1996 on some pc games. There are certain games that can only be played comfortably with a gamepad.

bumnut4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

PC had gamepads before PS1 released! I had a gamepad for my 386 in the early 90's.

I use game pads for lots of games, Batman AA/AC, Assassins Creed series, Sleeping Dogs, racing games, GTA series, etc

warczar4672d ago

PC gamers only use the "I'll whip your ass with my mouse and keyboard" argument when it suits them. Obviously everyone gaming on PC are using 360 controllers to play games now (sarcasm).

The only problem I see is this..

EX:

* With the A,B,X,Y buttons spread 2 to a side, lets say your using left track pad to run with your guy, but shoot or jump is programmed to Y or X.

You would have to be using your thumb to move while also pushing the buttons.

On NORMAL video game controllers, you move with left stick, and EITHER push buttons with right thumb, or use right stick......not both at same time.

This is the problem of not having all 4 buttons on the same side.

Try playing battlefield where you need to reload or switch guns or something but your also running for cover. Do you stop moving to press a button ?

That would make no sense.

So yea Aside from that, it looks really cool.

cyguration4673d ago

Why would you use Y or X to shoot when you have up to six triggers on the controller for shooting?

The X or Y for the Steam controllers would probably be used for non-important functions, where-as the six triggers or top buttons would be for all the important stuff since you would never have to move your hand positioning.

0ut1awed4673d ago

And yet you have up to 24 buttons under each thumb without even leaving the "trackpad" area.

I don't think spreading out the 4 physical keys is that big of a issue.

Limegreen4673d ago

This is the most stupid controller design i have ever seen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zephyrus344673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

This is brilliant! About two years ago, I made a blue print on a controller exactly like this, I still have the drawings in fact. My buddies are laughing as am I in amazement that someone made this finally, makes me happy. haha. My idea on it was, I wasn't a big fan of joysticks for playing FPS games, I loved the mouse and keyboard, but if I were to do something about that and slam it on to a controller, this is how I thought of it.

starchild4673d ago

It's cool to have your ideas vindicated like that sometimes isn't it. You were on to something. This controller looks promising and seems to have mostly positive feedback by those who have used it.

nosferatuzodd4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

its not like people don't like it its just different and i don't know if that type of controller will be accurate bumnut i can tell you're bot you take delusion to a higher level

Silly gameAr4673d ago (Edited 4673d ago )

@Starchild

Sorry, but I'm not a Sony fanboy because I happen to prefer the Playstation brand. I've gamed on and owned almost every console that has came out and respect the other companies that want to push gaming forward in a positive way.

I don't go out of my way to trash anyone's prefernce like most of you guys do, or bow down to all things Sony. BTW, from what I see, there are plenty of other types of fanboys that do the same as the Sony fanboys. In fact, I seem to remember you used to be a pretty hardcore xbox fan yourself. So should I call you a Microsoft fanboy?

starchild4673d ago

"I don't go out of my way to trash anyone's prefernce like most of you guys do, or bow down to all things Sony."

Reading your comment history puts the lie to that statement.

If you can show me anywhere where I have said "Microsoft is amazing" or "the XB1 is the console for me, the PS4 sucks" or any variation on those things, please do.

But I know for a fact I haven't said any of those things because I am not getting an Xbox One and I only plan to get a PS4. I have expressed my criticisms of the XB1 many times (in a fair and non-fanboyish way). On the other hand, I can also show you numerous comments of mine praising the PS4 or its games. Or the PS3 and its games.

I've gamed on pretty much every platform too. The difference is, I will praise games on every platform. I will defend the truth even if it means I end up defending consoles or games that do not personally interest me.

warczar4672d ago

@starchild

What is the problem with hating one corporation or another? I've been screwed by Microsoft on multiple occasions and anyone who has been screwed by sony or nintendo should be able to hate on those corporations. It's really the only thing a consumer can do when they have been wronged by some fuckhead corporation.

solidjun54670d ago

"Reading your comment history puts the lie to that statement. "

same thing can be said for you.

Sarick4673d ago

Interesting fact the new type of feedback used in these controllers was being discussed back when Sony was being sued for the rumble in the DS controllers

It used speaker type plates to transfer hi-fidelity sound directly to the fingers/hands without disrupting the motion control.

Unlike, current rumble controllers feedback had more fidelity but less power. If this is the same tech I mentioned above It'll be a different experience when playing games. You can more or less be able to differentiate pin drop in a silent room or the environment rumble as spaceship lands beside you.

Bolts4673d ago

Wow the haptic feedback sounds totally badass. The devs seems to be impressed by it as FPS controller which is a huge win

Blackdeath_6634673d ago

FPS is not the only genre of gaming that exists you know. the huge win is introducing new genres that previously could only be played with keyboard and mouse, valve said they already tested it with dota THAT is a huge win.

skydragoonity4673d ago

I like the idea of it being different from what's out there but i think its mostly pc fans that will like this controller, still prefer the ds4 & xbone concepts.

TemplarDante4673d ago

Dear Gabe,

There are genres other than FPS.

Sincerely,
The gaming community.

elhebbo164673d ago

but on PC FPS, MMO's and RTS are generally more popular than lets say a side scroller and so a controller like this would be more ideal than a traditional one. Hes bring the PC market to the living room not making another typical console ( no offense to Sony/ms).

Dude4204673d ago

Dear Templar,

There are other controllers that a PC can use if you don't like the Valve one.

Sincerely,
The non-ignorant community.

TheGrimReaper4673d ago

Dear Dude420,

Hopefully these other controllers are supported by SteamOS. I don't think MS nor Sony will support it with official drivers. And in my opinion first party controllers are way better than third party.

As for third party controllers: I don't know if they are supported by SteamOS. Maybe you could tell me, because I have not read enough about SteamOS.

Sincerely,
just me (as I am to humble to speak for a whole community)

Dude4204673d ago

@ the Grim Reaper, MS and Sony aren't the only ones with controllers, you do know there's also logitech right? Their recent gamepads are a mix between the dualshock and xbox controller. There are also other vendors like Razer and I'm pretty sure the non-Sony/MS vendors will chip in on the SteamOS. Heck, the Logitech gamepads already work on Ubuntu.

SteamOS is not exclusive to the steam machines as you can install it on your PC. I don't think Valve is stupid enough to drop support for third party hardware.

TheGrimReaper4673d ago

@Dude:

"As for third party controllers"
-> I think this should have made clear that I know that there are other vendors -.-"

My point was this:
You've said there are other controllers -> I agree!
But in MY opinion the controllers from other vendors are not AS good AS (pls don't read this as 'they are POS') the ones from MS or Sony.
Loving DualShock but I am still using a 360 pad on my PC. Just because of two things:
- Ease of use compared to DS3
- Quality of the product compared to Logitech, Razer etc.

And I don't think it'll be easy just to use a different controller because they wouldn't be able to mimic a mouse like the Valve one tries to.
So therefore my question: Will they (other vendors despite MS&Sony) be supported?
Of course they will be (my bad for not explaining in detail what I have meant) but I don't think they will be as easy to use as the ValvePad. Setting up a gamepad for a pure PC game can be a hassle (a RTS for example).

And I know that SteamOS is usable on different devices xD

PS:
I am thinking about people who want to use a SteamOS powered machine as console replacement in your living room where a keyboard/mouse setup is not an option.

evil_element4673d ago

Put this way. Valve ain't like any other company you know:

They endorse gamers hacking
Use of all third party peripherals
Never yet seen any piece of tech which couldn't be used for a game.

We were using wii motion controller back in 2007 to play Half Life 2 and other games. So this ain't new :D

Dear Templar,

They own the largest DD-library of games at their fingertips. Don't you think they would've tested each an every possible genre imaginable?

Sincerely,

kickerz4673d ago

Where can I sign up to this common sense community? Haha my girlfriend is always telling me to stop being so stupid. This could help lol

ajkula4673d ago

so you believe, with your seemingly almighty brain, that the games we developed, accessible on steam now, would run on new hardware/OS just by copying the files on it?
you're clever that's for sure, mate!

DigitalAnalog4672d ago

@kickerz

You can start by disassociating from the Dude420 alumni.

Somebody4673d ago

Have any of you read the actual Steam page about this controller?

About how the controller being designed for multiple types of games, not just FPSes? How it is also designed to bring RTS and simulation games to the living room? The article itself talked to devs from different genres.

And about it's not forced onto PC gamers? You can still use other peripherals for the SteamOS/Box. The controller even has a legacy mode so that older games will recognize it as a keyboard+mouse combo.

Sincerely,
Somebody.

3-4-54673d ago

controller setup doesn't even work well for FPS because of the 2 and 2 button spread.

Feralkitsune4673d ago

You don't use those buttons mate, you use the trackpads.

Feralkitsune4673d ago

http://tommyrefenes.tumblr....

Seems like they already know this. SMB being played by the developer of the game, can still play the game from pure muscle memory on the Steam controller as if he was playing the 360 controller.

Dante814673d ago

That's why I'm getting a DS4 if it supports PC. That trackpad is delicious.

dveio77d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing76d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9276d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit76d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing76d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9276d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
