What makes a "Perfect" Game?

Jeff: "Perfection is something for which everyone strives. But, for the gaming industry, perfection is an adjective that is painfully elusive. For every game that emerges from the shadows—shocking the gaming world with its surprising level of quality—there seem to be three more games that submerge to Duke Nukem: Forever- esque depths of disappointment."

Fallout 2 was a perfect game. It had great dialogue, a great story, great side quests, excellent mechanics, balanced weapons and enemies, challenging yet not impossible and triggered all my major feelings. One could argue that Fallout 2 helped breathe life back into a genre that was on it's way out the door and that is also set a standard for the genre as developers look into making video games like this again. I still to this day, play Fallout 2.

A perfect game (or close enough to perfect) for you... I can respect that. It's your opinion. Personally, I don't believe there is a such thing as a perfect game. Now amazing games... there are lots of those. I think the term "perfect" is probably just a bad use of word by some reviewers.

A perfect game is a combination of story, world, characters, gameplay, challenge, events & moments, technicality, and finally preference.

A great story is enjoyed by most people, a great world is a place gamers want to spend their time in, great characters draws you to the cast of the game, great gameplay is natural to play and unique to the game, a good challenge is a must, those moments that shock you because you didn't expect things to go that far, the game is playable from start to finish without annoying frame drops or constant screen tearing, and finally it has to be content that clicks with you as a person.

If a game can do all of that, then it's perfect to that person / reviewer.

@ ABizzel1

But then you're changing the definition of "perfect". It's like the people who say "literally", when it's not literal.

fallout was far from perfect, it was boring even in time it came out.

Kingdom Hearts is what I can call perfection. The entire game series speaks for itself. From the characters and their story's to having other iconic characters from Disney & Final Fantasy series. The system of how it's played meaning it's open action system was one of the first to it's kind. From it's gameplay to cinematic's hands down Kingdom Hearts is what I call gaming perfection.

a perfect gamer. what makes a perfect gamer?: a perfect person. and who may that be? Mr. Rogers, of course. everthing is just friggin wonderful to that guy.

there will never be a perfect game. perfect in some technical aspects maybe. but until we have a game where everyone who plays it says there is nothing wrong with it (perfect), then, only god could judge, and we all know how anal that guy can be...

edit: ohcrap, didnt know we were listing off perfect games. in that case, socom2, that was a perfect game and one of the first social networking gaming experaments, and a perfect one at that ; ).

MeatheadMilitia4616d ago

I would argue that every person who plays video games has their own "Perfect" game. Perfect in the subjective sense.

Me for example as I've stated above, have a perfect game and it is Fallout 2. Yes the game may have bugs, but the game itself is what I consider a perfect game for me.

PoSTedUP4616d ago (Edited 4616d ago )

of course, subjective. i agree, im sure eveeyone has their own perfect games. mine would be socom2, AOEII, Pesona3, roadrash3D. becuse i still go back and play them and their level of fun and emersion still surpasses present games imo. omg i would give my right foot to be able to play socom2 online again.
one of my Major goals is to set up two rooms with 8 PS2's each and play socom through LAN... dont judge.. hahah

i played fallout3 and it still is one of my favorite games this gen. never played fallout 2 tho.

AceBlazer134616d ago

i think these games that receive perfect scores are nothing more than the right recipe at the right time. a perfect game for me is something that you can always go back and enjoy no matter how many years pass. an example would be leafgreen/firered/ruby/sapphir e pokemon games. no one even remotely concerned with gaming can't say they haven't played 1 and no matter how many times you play through it it's one of the first set of games you get if you ever get an emulator.that's saying how good a game is.

Trackboss4616d ago

I agree with reboot 100% ! I believe Kingdom hearts is the perfect game :) For me at least haha.
