Is Indie Enough for PS4?

Sony’s approach to indie gaming is fantastic. They’re commitment to what is arguably the most exciting side of videogame development is indicative of their new, gamers first approach, but will that commitment ever be reason enough for your average Joe to go out and buy a home console?

Hell no.

To me, indie games are like GBA games. Budget, shallow, usually side-scrollers or platformers. None of the polish and refinement that I expect when I boot up my $500 console.

If I wanted to play those types of games, I could easily do it on my crappy PC or a handheld. My console is for AAA games in all their frantic, online-focused glory.

NateCole4632d ago

Good for you but i want all.

malokevi4632d ago

The article is about Indies, and whether or not they're enough in their own right to buy a console.

It's nice that you want it all. I want it all. I'm simply responding to the article.

I don't believe that indies are justification for a 500 dollar console. They are a great supplement, a great way to breed talent, and a desired medium for some gamers. Nobody is arguing any of that.

mewhy324632d ago

Indie is just one part of the complete gaming package that the PS4 offers. A true gaming machine for hardcore gamers.

Outside_ofthe_Box4632d ago (Edited 4632d ago )

Your opinion is rather moot in regards to this topic considering that according to you nothing will be enough. Your answer to that question no matter what is inserted in the "Is ____ enough for the PS4" will always be "hell no."

Edit @ below:

Sure whatever you say buddy. lol
I;m only stating the truth...

If you want my "valued opinion" (which we all know you really don't), my take on this is that Sony isn't relying on indie games. I can understand that perception due to the focus on them in the past two conferences prior to TGS, but that's the only reason why this question is being brought up. We already know all of Sony's studios are working on PS4 games. The 3 titles at launch are enough as most people don't buy more than 1-2 games at launch anyway and there will several F2P games available as well.

malokevi4632d ago

Thanks for your valued opinion. I guess that I will have a PS4 on launch day makes no difference. I guess that I stated my enthusiasm for AAA games is unimportant. Just... your deranged fanboyism being projected on everyone else.

malokevi4632d ago (Edited 4632d ago )

I dont see why you need to edit, rather than simply reply.

Nobody ever said that sony is relying on indie games. Does anyone around here bother to read the article, or do they read the first comment, get defensive, and give a knee jerk reaction without any consideration for the context the comment was made in?

Its like you're having a conversation with yourself. All of you.

I'll be picking up KZ and playing driveclub, as well as warframe, Planetside, and warthunder by Christmas. I'm well aware of Sony's AAA lineup. But that's not what the article is about, now is it?

Outside_ofthe_Box4632d ago (Edited 4632d ago )

First off, the later part after the edit is my opinion on the topic at hand... not a reply to your post. The paragraph before the edit is directed at you however...

Second,

***"Sure, indie games sell like hot cakes on iOS and the such, but will they ever be reason enough for your average Joe to go out and buy a home console?……unless that game happens to be Minecraft of course.

While certainly commendable, without anything truly mind blowing in the triple-A department, the argument could certainly be made for the PS4, for the time being at least, looking a little light weight."***

Directly from the article... LOL

And you're asking me if I read the article? Are you sure you even read it? You best stick to immature insults like you did over pm, makes you look far less foolish.

Bigpappy4632d ago

Although a bit harsh, I do agree. Like I said before: People need to be careful what they wish for. If you are a big fan ios and android games, and don't have enough on your phone or can't see the small screen well enough, then you should be a happy as a vampire at a blood drive.

If on the other hand you are a gamer who only plays around with these indie game sparingly (Yours truly), then you must be horrified at the possible bombardment of indies gone wild on your console.

Hopefully there add some kind of filter so I don't have to view thousands of games to find an arcade game that might interest me.

DigitalRaptor4632d ago (Edited 4632d ago )

That's strange - I'm looking at Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Shadow of the Beast, Transistor, The Witness, Daylight, Resogun, H-Hour: World's Elite, Volume, Contrast, Warframe, Primal Carnage: Genesis, Outlast, I see either unique, innovative and original ideas, or things that aren't exactly low budget, not sidescrollers or without polish or refinement. Or a combination. That's really what a next gen system should be - more flexible - The company supporting its console should also be flexible AND supportive, so that any developer can bring whatever experience they want to create and share it on that console.

Despite the past almost 20 years of dedication to the fostering of new developers to help them grow, housing new IP after new IP, year after year, and pushing the boundaries technologically, people seem to still doubt Sony's ability to bring amazing AAA games.

As for you, sure, if you're a gamer who doesn't appreciate lots of diversity in the games they play, go ahead and concentrate solely on AAA. I'll be able to enjoy an unprecedented amount of diversity and unique and original games, all on the same platform.

@ Bigpappy

Sony's latest store already has categories and filters in place, and Yoshida has confirmed ( http://www.youtube.com/watc... ) that it's easy to be able to separate content and add new things to the store very easily, so I doubt they would forgo that for the PS4, which is meant to be even more streamlined and user-customised.

MrDead4630d ago

It’s just a poor website stick prodding for attention, pay it no heed.

TomShoe4632d ago

This guy doesn't understand what indies are about. I'd explain it, but nothing I could say is going to change your mind.

I will enjoy PS4's legions of indies, including the ones I get for free with PS+ :D

SCW19824632d ago

Agreed until I read online focused. :(

GarrusVakarian4630d ago (Edited 4630d ago )

You have no idea how wrong your comment is.

"Budget, shallow, usually side-scrollers or platformers. "

Warthunder and Planetside 2 say hello.

Also i think you are thinking of Xbox live indie games, your description of them matches those.

n4rc4630d ago

Not a chance..

They are a nice addition... But no console will survive solely because of thrm..

You hear all the love for them and how awesome they are.. Yet nobody buys them compared to bigger aaa games..

Its a bonus. Nothing wrong with having options.

Sony is the home of AAA games and adding Indie as well is just a bonus.

Godmars2904632d ago

Sony hardly ONLY has indies.

If anything, whether or not MS can provide a steady stream of 1st house titles should be the general concern - since they've yet to have done so before.

CaptainYesterday4632d ago

Indies are games and I love me some video games I don't care if it's a AAA game or a game 3 guys in a basement made as long as it's fun :)

GribbleGrunger4632d ago

Let the healing begin, Sony. It's time to put the controller in the hands of the young at heart and take the guns out of the hands of the narrow minded.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot18d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose19d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE19d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername18d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy19d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde18d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8618d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8618d ago (Edited 18d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300019d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle19d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
