How Metal Gear Solid 5's Quiet Should Look

GR - "The character was made to look that way after noted game designer Hideo Kojima suggested to his character designer that he wanted an "erotic" female character who could push the sales of action figures and encourage cosplayers to dress up as her."

That looks better and more appropriate.

Edit: With that said, I'm pretty sure Kojima will come up with some really good to why there's a naked female sniper on the battlefield.

xHeavYx4637d ago

Please, are we all purists now?
I didn't see people crying when Raiden was running around naked, Kratos showing most of his body, ETC.
Stop with the whining already, when you make an iconic franchise like Metal Gear, you go and dress your characters any way you want

Count4637d ago

I actually did see people crying about Raiden. Thank you for mentioning that.

And I'm sure if it was as apparent as this is then we'd see a lot more bitching about that.

Maddens Raiders4637d ago

Someone here might say, "a man would say, "left pic > right pic"

Blacktric4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Yeah he fully showed his support for a mock up picture made by a tumblr feminazi and posted by a self proclaimed turbo feminist and racist "videogame journalist" that somehow managed to get banned from a place like reddit for desperately hitfishing.

Come back when you actually have something more constructive than "it looks better and more appropriate" and "you said it". Or rather when you have played the game or got some solid info about her background, her story arc and more importantly her abilities.

I actually find it really amusing that people who call the design sexist and instantly dismiss her combat abilities because of her gender and more importantly her get up while trying to prove that they are against sexism. It's irony at its best.

blind-reaper4637d ago

I don't think it is much about "morals" or "puritanism", more about realism (it would be extremely ridiculous to see a female soldier in a battlefield wearing what the quiet girl wears), but then again Metal Gear is not about realism.

starchild4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Too many gamers today are just whinny, entitled drama queens. They think everybody owes them something.

Well, if you don't like the product as it is offered you are always free to not buy it.

-Gespenst-4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

The difference with Raiden is that it was meant as comedy. It played on male social anxieties about nudeness imposed in the first place by body standards set by men, not to mention how feminine Raiden was in that game. That was a critique and was humourous. It critiqued something that deserved to be criticised. (I mean think of the damn cartwheel).

With this, it's different. As it stands, there's nothing funny about Quiet, she's clearly a gravely serious character, and yet at the same time, that seriousness, that gravity, is sort of undermined by her blatant sexualisation. This distracts from her actual plight- panders to the male-gaze. This might even be intentional on Kojima's part as a critique, but we'll have to wait and see. He's a smart guy, but so far he's made a bad first impression with this character. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment though.

As for Kratos, well, yes, there kind of is something a little bit objectionable about that, but not for the same reasons as the whole Quiet thing. If anything, Kratos body represents some sort of ideal masculinity- being ripped, huge etc. And is kind of manifestation of GOW's creators ideas of what constitutes strength in a man. This is of course nonsense, and really owes a lot to general attitudes about gender in today's society. It's one of the features of patriarchy- not only are women objectified and exploited, but men are beholden to ridiculous ideals of masculinity that they must attain. Most of the gatekeepers of these things reside in popular culture.

Also, @starchild: There's a big difference between "entitlement" i.e. demanding developers make you games and make them right; and wanting to foster a less poisonous culture. You have to learn to distinguish between the two, you can't equate a desire for human rights and social, cultural equality (as influenced and formed by all artifacts that pervade culture) with some idea of spoilt consumerism. The backlash to Quiet certainly concerns the former.

Edit #2: Ah, I see the reactionary disagrees are coming in thick and fast. Great community here at n4g. They really make an effort to understand the subtleties of your arguments- especially if those arguments happen to challenge their complacencies.

TheBlackSmoke4637d ago

Its very apparent who has never played MGS4 before on this site. Sexy females in MGS games is nothing new.

MGS1 - Dat Meryl's ass, sniperwolf with her top zipped all the way down must of been chilly when laying prone in the snow

MGS2- Get in a locker and "boost" your stamina whilst looking at JAV swimsuit models, Raiden doing naked cartwheels... hnghh

MGS3 - Eva and dat zipped down jumpsuit press R1 to look at her ass while changing. EVERYONE PRESSED IT GODAMMIT!

MGS4 - Solid snake squatting down reading playboy to calm himself down. All the bosses were sexy supermodels in leather spandex, tranq that crazy woman before she molests you to death!!

Wni04637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

@Gespenst: Good points, however you are not going to find many people who agree with you here. On one hand its good to give artistic liberty to these developers, its another thing to expect them to grow up.

Until we play we wont understand her character, but as stands the "cosplay and sexy" reasons are juvenile.

Its not being a white knight or beta males, its simply stating an argument or different point of view. I mean is Ellen page's character in B2S overly sexual just because its a chick in a videogame? No, because those writers and developers actually want to make a mature game, not some teenage boys fantasy of what they think is mature.

There is a difference in the way strong female characters are portrayed in movies vs how pathetic it is in videogames. Sarah Conner, Ripley, Jessica Chastain in ZeroDarkThirty etc etc.

@TheBlackSmoke: You didnt read the article, the author is saying its time for a change. Nobody is rioting or setting up a boycott... So there is no need to trash peoples opinions and write them off as White Knights. Naughty Dog, could have had Ellie as a highschool cheerleader with barely any clothes... Some studios are making progress.

TheBlackSmoke4637d ago

@Wni0

Well first of all, you're putting words in my mouth, I never trashed or called anyone a white knight.

Second, who are you to say what is progress and what is right and wrong. My post which was really just pointing out that MGS as a series has always had this element within it. The MGS games are renowned for integrating social commentry, memes and satire.

MGS games are expected to have that wild flair and moments of comedy even in the heat of battle, thats what makes kojima games unique.

What you are proposing is that he fall in line with developers who are making staright forward games about normal people struggling to survive, when MGS is a Sci fi superhuman, epic, cheesy, james bond, pop culture fest.

Its his Art, you either like it or you move on, never tell an artist to do what you want.

BattleTorn4637d ago

"u all gay or what? first design is 1000 times better!!!"

Way to give credit against your own argument.

You know the first photo is wrong when homophobs are taking the side of it.

SilentNegotiator4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Some of us play games for entertainment, not political correctness or accuracy.

Wni04637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

@The Black Smoke: No no, ofc MGS can continue to do its wild flair style of story / art, if that's what it wants to do. It's good to have ridiculous games like Lollipop Chainsaw, or Arcade classics like TimeSplitters where EVERY female is ridiculously sexual.

But the characters motive is flawed if she dresses like that, like Gespenst pointed out. Some journalists and gamers just want more mature themes and writing, and moves like this with Quiet seem, well lazy.
Also i didnt mean u called i meant the general community

nveenio4637d ago

She should look exactly how Kojima says she should look. He designed her. It's his character. Kojima can do whatever he wants. He doesn't even need a good reason to do it. Does that mean it will be well received? Not necessarily. But if you don't like Kojima's characters, you're welcome to play another game.

mewhy324637d ago

I don't see anything wrong with the model. I mean people are just too sensitive. Too afraid of offending someone blah blah blah. If you don't like it then don't buy the freakin' game.

TotalHitman4637d ago

Clearly you guys have never played Metal Gear.

Play Peace Walker, you can unlock versions of main female characters in their underwear :)

GameSpawn4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Why are people up in arms about this now?

Why are people not jumping all over other games like ANY Team Ninja game, Bayonetta, or hell even Lollipop Chainsaw? Feel free to add more if you like.

People who are this overprotective of sexism in any sort of media need to open their damn minds.

Anyone with half a brain that has played the Metal Gear series knows that despite the sexploitation (which is tame in comparison to other games) the female characters tend to be as strong of characters as the leading males if not stronger. When you just look at Kojima's female characters' intangible traits they are women other women would respect and empathize. Yes they have physical appearances that are exploited in the name of "being sexy" but does this mean we should go the full nine yards and effectively censor EVERYTHING remotely anti-feminist?

How about we make all cheerleaders wear sweatpants and sweatshirts; make every female newscaster wear conservative pantsuits; make every woman at the beach wear a one piece with a skirt; add more if you like.

I'll admit that sexploitation gets overused at times just because of the fact that sex sells, but censoring it out completely and sticking your fingers in your ears over the matter will not help the progress of society. I'm sure there is a middle ground (of which MGS falls well within) that everyone can compromise with being sexy without being too offensive (aka sexy for sexy sake and no other would be offensive; DOA "BOOB" Physics I'm looking at you).

I like bringing Lollipop Chainsaw into this because Suda made this one of his points of satire in the game. Sexploitation was practically a central theme of Juliet's character, but the player was constantly chastised by Juliet for looking up her skirt. Also add to the fact that everything was SO over the top you never could take anything seriously.

Panthers4637d ago

MGS characters (at leas the main ones) are never your run of the mill soldiers. They all have VERY strong personalities. Im sure that will tie into why this woman is a half naked sniper.

Rainstorm814637d ago

This game is getting critisizwed because its MGS a very popular and iconic franchise.

Where was all this call for change when Lollipop Chainsaw came out? Bayonetta? Dead or Alive? What about Chloe charcter in Uncharted? She was a slut!

When i see these constant stories about this one character for an unreleased game.....I see nitpicking at its finest

Beta males is more appropriate. They are just mad cause they would be friendzoned by someone as beautiful as her at best. These knights in shining armor are stupid and have zero tastes in design choice and should truly be ashsmed of theirselves. Nobody complained about dead or alive, mortal combat, or lollipop chainsaw. Its seething jealousy that they cannot grasp a tenth of kojimas genious. Disagree away btw an internet forum doesnt change my view of things

Panthers4637d ago

As I said above, Metal Gear Solid characters all have very strong personalities, and I am sure that will account for her attire.

People who are suggesting that no soldier would wear that into combat is not understanding this. A lot of MGS characters do not care about convention. They will do what they want.

Besides, why is distraction not a good combat maneuver?

By who's standards ? yours or this snooper of an artist who should have thought of the feelings and respect the decisions and imagination of her fellow colleague in major ?

This is insulting to the artist who did the original drawings & it feels more like trespassing on his work.

This is highly immaturish & cringe worthy !

@YourEdit :
"Edit: With that said, I'm pretty sure Kojima will come up with some really good to why there's a naked female sniper on the battlefield."

She's NOT naked !

@Count
Because you dislike an artist work of art but you have nothing to say about people trying to mess with the man's vision and trying to Distort his work ? then you have serious moral issues.

I am speaking and voicing this issue because I am an artist myself,I won't allow some half baked artists who have short sighted imagination to start playing around with something that I made and proud of just because they are insecure about some choices I made.

"Better and more appropriate" according to who? Some puritanical people that think any exposure of skin is uncalled for or people who are trying to say all of the characters should have stand military issue look. There are plenty spies that use revealing clothing to get close to their targets to kill them.

It is up to the creative director to state what the vision of his or her game should be. Also, looking for realism in a MGS game as it applies to a central character is beyond stupid.

Have you seen what any of those central characters in MGS games look like? I would be extremely surprised to find many military outfits that match some of those outfits the characters wear.

voodoochildnyc4637d ago

Who is anyone to tell an artist what or how to paint? who are any of us to tell Kojima how to make his next masterpiece? it is just so absurd to presume to know better than someone so highly admired. first of all the game is no where near released, we dont know why she dresses like that or in what context she is introduced into the game. to sit there and make suggestions is downright disrespectful. if you find it offensive thats perfectly fine... THEN DONT PLAY THE GAME THEN GO PLAY SUPER MARIO.

It's really tired the way people try to justify those other outfits. Ideally, every crappy design will get backlash until it isn't the standard anymore.

Eamon4637d ago

To be fair, in a realistic world, the second (edited) picture looks more like a female soldier.

TheBlackSmoke4637d ago

Good thing MGS world is anything but realistic then.

Lord_Sloth4637d ago

And yet Metal Gear is anything but a realistic world so I don't get all the belly aching. People need to shut up and get over it.

OMG A HOTT WOMANS! I AM OFENZ!!!

Seriously? Are we that ashamed of the female form that somebody can't show it off as most women do in real life anyway?

cleft54637d ago

MGS is hardly realistic and Kojima is making a game based off of themes or memes, with each central character representing those memes. That is nothing new for the MGS series.

Eamon4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

To say MGS is anything but realistic is only kidding yourself.

The guns, the sound effects, the military vehicles or armour, the enemy reactions etc are all based on real life.

The world is based on our own world and individual eras, the Cold War, post-9/11 etc.

Even the story about nuclear proliferation, global politics, war trauma is all inspired by real life. And the locations. Like Russian territory, Middle East, Eastern Europe, South America. And organisations; CIA, KGB, GRU, FSLN, ArmsTech, DARPA, United Nations. Hell, even historically correct Cold War Presidents. Not to mention, key historical events that inspired the settings of specific MGS games like post-WW2 (MGS3), Cuban Missile Crisis (MGSPW).

The only unrealistic parts are the sprinkles of supernatural occurrences that spice up the game like psychokinesis and others. And some futuristic technology like codec system and stealth camo.

I'm not complaining about sexism or nudity or whatever. All I'm saying, the picture on the right looks more like a female soldier than the one on the left.

You guys can fap to the one on the left all you want, doesn't make what I said any less true.

Lord_Sloth4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Nanomachine Immortal Vampire, Arm Posession Nanomachine Hypnosis, Shirtless Shaman devoured by Crows, Psycho Mantis, Arsenal Gear, Guns of the Patriots, Patriots in general, The Fear, The Sorrow, The Fury, The End, C Section cutting through the entire torso...Etc...

Regardless this doesn't effect the constant sexual jokes and imagery Metal Gear's ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR!!!

Strip Search Naomi, Spying on Meryl, Naked Guard, Meryl's Underwear, Shirtless Snake, Shirtless Raven, Shirtless Liquid, taking pictures of Naomi and Mei Ling, Snake's G-String suit, Pin Up Girls, Snake Masturbating to a Pin Up Girl, Otocon keeping the pin up girl pictures for later, Fortune's Swim Suit, Naked Raiden, Shirtless Vamp, Eva's jiggles, Volgin's Crotch Grab, more Eva jiggles, Old Man G String Suit, Beauty and Beast squad straddling you, B&B Squad in general, Naomi's jiggles, More Naomi Jiggles, Shirtless Vamp returns, Frog Units, Shirtless Vamp Forever, More Naomi Jiggles, Shirtless Vamp and G-String Ninja Cyborg, Mei Ling's ass, Even More Naomi Jiggles, Shirtless Old Men Battle.

Lord_Sloth, as I've already said, I'm not debating any of that stuff.

By the standard that people are now deciding what's good and bad character design, even without knowing the full character.

... really, it's just about the need to make controversy out of nothing. There MIGHT be a valid issue about sexism in gaming, but these idiots are so overeager for... whatever, that they're not even seeing the actual problems that exist.

EdoubleD4637d ago

Just stop, until the purpose of the character is known. You shouldn't assume or fantasize how it should look.

At least give Kojima the benefit of the doubt when he says that there is a reason for her exposure.

Jesus, these articles are going to be around for weeks aren't they?

MHenderson4637d ago

It isn't like he's known for his delicate hand on this sort of stuff, though. All the first-person peeping scenes in MGS 3, the Naomi Hunter ones in 4, the fact that one mission in MGS1 was predicated on checking out a woman's butt to progress the story.

EdoubleD4637d ago

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Difference being that this is a different MG. I never denounced the character nor have I praised it. All I ask is wait it out and judge then.

I'm only basing this off his theme of making this a more darker MGS.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave715d ago (Edited 715d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx714d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga714d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken714d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot715d ago (Edited 715d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken714d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69715d ago (Edited 715d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno715d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69714d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989714d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69713d ago (Edited 713d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989713d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE715d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23714d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE713d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde714d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE713d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers714d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm23714d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
