Sadly, I could see Sony messing this up...

TrendyGamers4615d ago

I think they've learned from past peripherals and it will be a success.

UltimateMaster4615d ago

Why not team up with Occulus Rift?

sincitysir14615d ago

OR doesn't believe in exclusivity

Anarki4615d ago

That pic is absolute genius.

awesomeperson4615d ago

@Ultimate

From what we've heard, Sony have been working on their PS4 VR headset since before Oculus Rift was first announced.

Not to mention Sony is a hardware manufacturing giant, I don't really see why they'ld just roll over and team up, when they're obviously going for the dominant market share.

I would be pleased if they made the system compatible with OR, or perhaps got a license for their software/tools so they could be based on the same system, but further than that, I don't see any sort of partnership.

We'll learn soon enough.

JohnnyBadfinger4615d ago

I thought playstation gamers didn't like "gimmicks".... Oh wait that only applies to Microsoft "gimmicks" my bad....

Seriously virtual head set? Why the fuck don't they build a time machine while they are at it?... Stupidest idea ever and I hope it never comes to fruition. Clearly someone has been watching too much 'back to the future'

If they take it seriously it'll take off.

Veni Vidi Vici4615d ago

I seriously doubt they do but even if they did, Oculus has already beat them to the punch. They have all the hype and dev kits out to whomever wants them. Their price point is reasonable and their tech has been proven to be amazing already. Sony has a huge hill to climb if they want to beat Oculus. Hell, Oculus already has a bunch of major developers touting the thing as being amazing and legit.

Sony screwed up by not partnering with Oculus. They could have helped with any remaining hardware issues and the screen in return for exclusivity on consoles. Even timed exclusivity would have been better than Sony trying to beat Oculus. I don't see Sony winning this one.

prodg524615d ago

@Vendi Vidi Vici Sony is not behind on this at all. They've already release two other versions of this. This will be the third to market. OR hasn't made it on to the shelves yet.

The difference with this is that games don't have to be specifically coded for Sony's headset. It works with any hdmi connection.

USEYOURFIST4615d ago

@prodg, your thinking of Sony's head mounted displays which are just personal 3d display units. They have not put any vr headset on the market. That being said your right in there not behind, if people google tgs 2012 Sony vr headset you can see Sony's fist public showing of there vr headset, which has a camera for augmented reality vr making it better than rift already in my eyes

Rimeskeem4615d ago

Hey i didnt expect xbox to mess up with the new one but then they did and had to fix it so surprise may be waiting for us

AgentSmithPS44615d ago

If Sony does this right and at a good price it will help them stay on top of the console battles for a long time.

People will buy the PS4 knowing in the near future they'll be INSIDE their games!

Sony could even have an optional/temporary $5 monthly fee and sell it at an even more reduced price.

These devices are small and easier to make than a huge TV, there is NO reason for them to be expensive, they just need to make them "good enough" just like the PS4.

Scatpants4615d ago

The last headset they made was like $900. If they keep with that price it will fail. Since it will be their 3rd generation it should be cheaper though.

givemeshelter4614d ago

The price won't be low.
http://www.vg247.com/2013/0...
This will be a niche product. The price is too high for average consumer adoption. It's the cost of mid-range to high end PC... with the Occulus Rift thrown in.
If that price is true. It will fail

telekineticmantis4615d ago

Adding the PS eye to the headset could really change the game, and give it MP capabilities, it brings it closer too that AR/VR headest I'm hoping for, it may not be as Amazing and revolutionary, but close.

"Sadly, I could see Sony messing this up..." Said the guy apparently ready to buy an Xbone. Go figure. Stupid is as stupid does, as they say. Foolsjoker indeed.

Now this is what will separate consoles. VR will be the true next gen experience. Kinect 2.0 is already proven to be unwanted but there's a great interest in VR and Sony seems to be leading the way again.

Bigpappy4615d ago

Heard that with the Move and with 3D gaming also. Why would this be different this time around. It is not with every console and there is no reason to support it. So they just get to introduce it.

Hitman07694615d ago

Pappy I seem to never agree with you in the past years. We probably won't agree ever again either. But I agree with the contents of that one comment (not necessarily any follow ups after lol). We saw a great potential in Move + 3D becoming VR while Kinect 1.0 appeared to be a silly invention. Kinect 2.0 is in all Xbox ONE packages so will probably get a lot more support than the Oculus Rift and PS4 VR combined, however it will probably not deliver a VR experience that pushes the boundaries.

I have this weird feeling after seeing Kinect 1.0, Move, and 3D failing to bring us VR that VR is not going to arrive this upcoming gen. I also feel like when VR does arrive, it will be overnight with some new invention that catches on as fast as the iPad (not with a really slow draw). But that's just my 2 cents I could easily be wrong.

No_Limit4615d ago

Nice logic Bigpappy. Agreed with everything you just said.

sync904615d ago

Atleast there trying new things. Not just new ways to screw you out of your money.

AngelicIceDiamond4615d ago

@Pappy Its just because Sony's doing it, nothing else.

If anyone else was doing it, it would absolutely not matter in the slightest.

starchild4615d ago

But we're already going to have VR on PC with Oculus Rift and there is nothing stopping Microsoft from coming out with a VR headset or implementing Rift support.

This is still a rumor anyway.

Hicken4615d ago

Um, it's kinda far from a rumor, since they've been working on it and have shown off many versions of it over the past few years.

Whether or not it'll actually come to PS4 is questionable, but there's no part of it that is a rumor.

ABeastNamedTariq4615d ago

This could be a game changer. We'd be one step closer to achieving our VR dreams (with the OR too, of course)!

Destrania4615d ago

I think a VR headset could be cool.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook71079d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal1080d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow1080d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal1080d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt1079d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
