Hotline Miami Devs Reconsidering Sexual Assault Scene

The demo for Hotline Miami 2 used to open with the Pig Butcher, a beefy, violent man, straddling a terrified woman and dropping his trousers – and then a director called "Cut!" and the actors dispersed. This almost-rape scene isn't in the demo anymore, following negative reactions from early players. One half of developer Dennaton Games, Denis Wedin, tells Rock, Paper, Shotgun that the intent behind that opening isn't to disgust or alienate people, and he's considering tweaks for the full game.

So she doesn't actually get raped then?

You bust heads, slice bodies and shoot people and dogs but an almost rape scene is enough to give players concerned?

Truly something is wrong with society.

Enemy4658d ago

You almost sound bothered that there isn't going to be a rape scene.

XboxFun4658d ago (Edited 4658d ago )

Point truly missed.

Murder is murder and just as bad as rape. How one is glossed over and accepted but rape is crossing the line is comical to me.

It's almost to say this society has a tolerance or accepts only specific types of violence and acts of degradation. Rape is not one of them.

If those certain people are offended by the almost rape scene in this game and nothing else then those people need to be morally questioned.

Enemy4658d ago (Edited 4658d ago )

Hotline Miami is cartoony violence at best. There's no such thing as cartoony rape. Rape will always look worse.

How does one justify rape in a game, I wonder. You could justify murder by telling the player they're bad guys and that they deserve it. But rape? Please explain how it's comparable, and how raping another character in the game will benefit the player.

"Rape this woman to succeed."

Press N for No and don't succeed

@ below: Well, at this point, it's more than just a scene. Forcing it into the player's hands is a lot different than merely seeing it in, say, a cutscene.

Jovanian 4658d ago (Edited 4658d ago )

@Enemy

How to justify the rape scene in HM2: It is part of the story, and essentially tells how society has grossly misconstrued the actions of Jacket.

Your move.

@above
'Well, at this point, it's more than just a scene...'

How does that make ANY difference whatsoever...You sound like you've never played hotline miami btw. Press Y for Yes to progress? LOL you don't know anything about this game.

nick3094658d ago

Why justify violence and murder at all, dude these are VIDEOGAMES the rape aint real, the violence and murder aint either.

Enemy4658d ago (Edited 4658d ago )

^ When all else fails, accuse me of never having played the game, when I have it right on my desktop among countless other indie games. Do I really need to take a screenshot?

On top of that, you take my example as literal as it could possibly be taken. It was a general example. The action is forced onto the player exactly in the way that I described. There is no way around it. It's rape or go home.

I don't care what your vision is, don't force a player to rape another character.

Jovanian 4658d ago

@Enemy

Why stop there? Why not say 'don't force the player to kill people!'

Whats the matter? Killing is bad! Killing is worse than rape. While we're at it, better take out that torture scene where they kick and stomp the russian mobster to death. That is most certainly worse than rape. I think that should be taken out of hotline miami 2 as well

maniacmayhem4658d ago

"you take my example as literal as it could possibly be taken."

What's so funny about this statement is you took the original comment as literal too.

There is NO RAPE SCENE in this game. The whole point of the original comment was people getting bent out of shape for a scene that doesn't even happen and yet these same people gloss over the other extreme violence that this game DOES portray and graphically too.

this is the point that you seem to be missing.

Are you freaking kidding me? Murder and dismemberment and torture, thats all fine and dandy...but god f%&king forbid somebody got raped! Thats worse than murder!

Okay but seriously, they are reconsidering what essentially amounts to a single short animation, that is, the pig man unzipping his pants and getting ontop of the hooker...if they took it out, it wouldn't really alter much, but damn it its the PRINCIPLE of the situation that is making me upset. This is their artistic vision, and it should not be censored

further, its not even a 'true' rape...its a movie depiction of the original hotline miami, its freaking fake people. Should we ban movies that have rape in it? should we ban books and stories that have rape in it? Grow up people

sdozzo4658d ago

Better for PR if they just drop it.

Jovanian 4658d ago

Maybe, but I consider it just spineless if they were to drop it. If they didn't put it in in the first place, that would be cool with me, but the fact that they put it in and some girl gamer ditz wrote an angry blog about the patriarchy in hotline miami 2 that prompted the scenes removal, I feel that is a gross violation of their artistic vision for the game

JimmyHACK4658d ago

I knew this porno scene would become another manufactured industry controversy. *sigh*

RedHawkX4658d ago

what i hate is hypocritz that are like omg its rape and then they turn around and have random sex with a 1000 different people and say its just sex like theres nothing to it. girls need to figure out if sex is meaningful to them or if its just like a handshake like many many people act like it is on the interent with there defense force against the people saying you shouldnt be having sex with a bunch of random people just to feel good in that moment when you could spend a little more time giving that sex and power to someone thats not a dead beat and who is meaningful to you and decent member of society.

sdozzo4657d ago

It's not "spineless." Guys are trying to make a living and sell their product.

Terrible month. Detroit and Black Ops 3 (available for a limited time) are already in the PS Plus Collection, and Detroit was also a free game on PS Plus years ago. WWE 2K Battlegrounds is terrible. Only the smaller games that were added are good additions.

PS Plus is way better than PS Now right now (quality > quantity) and has been good for a long time, and great since the PS5 released. I was tempted to subscribe to PS Now over the holidays but I just didn't trust in the quality of the service. They need to up their game because the quality of the service is deteriorating. I'm starting to wonder if they're going to ditch PS Now as we know it and basically add it as an extra tier to PS Plus because that's what they've been prioritizing.

-Ghost1952d ago (Edited 1952d ago )

Not sure why WWE 2K Battlegrounds was a highlight for this month. I browsed the games in December and it was there/played it.

SamPao1951d ago

Darksiders genesis. Thats a pretty neat addition

gamer78041951d ago (Edited 1951d ago )

The game was a massive disappointment, even playing with a friend it was terrible. But we finished it til the end. The game is so buggy and just not much fun a lot of times.

iplay1up21951d ago

Now, is not nearly as good as Game Pass, but $60 for a year? Well worth it!

gamer78041951d ago

Detroit become human is fantastic. One of the best this gen

oakshin1951d ago

Last time blop 3 was on here it came with the dlc

RgR1951d ago

Great for me.

I was looking to play darksiders genesis...it's the last one I need to play. And little nightmares is another one I wanted to try.

The rest I've already played or am not interested. Overall I think they're great additions.

iplay1up21951d ago (Edited 1951d ago )

I was disappointed with Darksiders 3. I played for a couple of hours, and deleted it. That is just me though, a lot of people liked it. Also the price is right. Hope you do like it!😁

RgR1951d ago

Yea I'm with you there. The beginning and gameplay feels so different but after a certain point I feel like it got much better.

I played it in classic mode so it would be more similar to other darksiders but man did I die a lot in the beginning due to learning how to play. Came into it fresh from darksiders 2.

SamPao1951d ago

Yeah, I am still playing frostpunk from last month...
Heard good things about little nightmares

Hotline Miami will probably always be their best series, tbh. For me, they are definitely the best indie game publisher though.

Great article it was informative.

“Without American style protection of speech, I cannot see those sorts of games ever being approved to be released in Australia unmodified. I am OK with that.”

You undermine your efforts from start with that attitude. Free speech helped with lawsuits but our ratings board has nothing to do with our government. The industry is self regulated. Your classifications are terrible and you should try to change it. Adopt the American industry standard. There is no law involved. That’s why I don’t understand why Americans demand government intervention on things like micro transactions. They are ok with what you have now too I guess.
