SNES emulator discovered on iTunes App Store

Don't tell anyone, but: There's a SNES emulator lurking on the iTunes App Store. For less than a dollar, you can play a whole bunch of Super Nintendo games right on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Just keep it to yourself, because while emulators are legal in most places, acquiring the games to play on them is a bit of a legal grey area.

Emulators are perfectly legal. Roms are not however.

Chrono4649d ago

It is legal for an individual to personally make backup copies of a game one owns. Individuals may make backup copies for various reasons.

Regardless of the legality of emulators & Roms;

Apple should not be able to restrict what software I can or cannot have on the device, that I paid good money for.

Vegrad4154649d ago

While that may be true, in practice it is not. The catch-22 here is that it IS illegal to circumvent copy protections. The DMCA exemptions for games don't cover personal backup, only testing for bugs, etc.

There have been emulators for Android as well. What rock did you come crawling under out from?

crazysammy4649d ago

The iphone is just locked up tighter than Android devices. So for a non-jailbroken iphone this is a pretty big deal. Not that cracking an idevice is that difficult though.

LightSamus4649d ago

Android is not monitored and watched as closely as iTunes usually is. Whilst Google apparently don't care if emulators are available on their service, Apple normally don't let them though.

ChickeyCantor4649d ago

There is nothing wrong with emulation. Since its own written software that mimics a set of hardware modules.

The games however do have a gray area. Some are abandoned, but most are not. Those roms are not released on Itunes or Google Play.

And most people jailbreak it simply to install pirated software.

Wow, not that my Android phone hasn't been doing this for years... iPhones are garbage.

Nintendo should support all their consoles emulator.

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

But all of the great games have been made by humans

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle33d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7533d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.
