Is The Switch To PC Gaming Worth It?

With the next generation of game consoles only a few short months away, the new systems from Sony and Microsoft seem to hold all the attention. However, what can be said - if anything - about opting for a future on the PC instead? Gamers Association writer Ben Maguire offers his opinion.

In my opinion, the difference between graphics doesn't justify the difference in price, the gap is just too big. But each to their own.

UltimateMaster4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

PS4's online multiplayer should remain free.

UltimateMaster4654d ago

How bout getting both PC and Console?

I_am_Batman4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

I agree that the multiplayer should be free. I'm not taking anything away from PS+ cause it's a really great and valuable service but I still think that multiplayer shouldn't be behind the paywall.

UltimateMaster4654d ago

@I_am_Batman

Yeah, because so far, the only multiplayer games you can play for free so far are the Free-to-play games coming to PS4.
Then again, they are free on the PC as well.

As a gamer, I own everything, and I can't wait to play Killzone Shadow Fall. It's epic!

modesign4654d ago

your paying for the game library which is free, im sure your also going to say FFXIV should be free, elder scrolls online should be free, and all upcoming MMO's with subscriptions should be free.

hagla4654d ago

I have a gaming PC and both ps3 and xbox 360. The graphics are better on PC, but I feel as though the PC gets shafted on releases too often to rely on it as your number one gaming rig.

I find myself wanting to play most things on ps3 if given the choice, not because it's better on the ps3 but because I enjoy the trophy system (not sure exactly why I love it so much but I do).

In some ways the PC get's the worst deal of all. Better graphics yes but so many late/no releases of great games. We've also put up with years of dodgy controller support for those who like it but that is usually pretty good now.

I'll be going PS4 combined with PC this gen but could not and would not recommend PC alone. I honestly think WoW ruined PC gaming for a while and it's still recovering.

Somebody4654d ago

@hagla

"I find myself wanting to play most things on ps3"

That's pretty much the very reason why they kept shafting the PC version: to get you buy the console version instead. Really, they spent tons of effort to make PC games play fluidly on consoled but they couldn't do the same for PC ports? Diablo 3 is a good example.

Play crysis 3 or far cry 3 on ultra settings on a 1440p screen then play the ps3 versions and get back to me.

GarrusVakarian4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

Crysis 3 is AVERAGE at best, its not just about graphics! What is WRONG with you PC elitists?

If the only enjoyment you can get is from game running on max settings regardless of how good the actual game is, then i feel very sorry for you.

Play The Last Of Us or any other PS3 exclusive then get back to me. So sick and tired of visuals being the only thing that factors into a game being good for you PC elitists. Im so glad i don't own a PC from fear of turning into complete snobs like them.

SnakeCQC4654d ago

dude For the price you spend on a setup that could power and display that you could probably by an insanely high end hdtv(atleast 60 inches) and surround sound system.

thezeldadoth4654d ago

^Or any other ps3 exclusive? sounds like a fanboy.

Ripsta7th4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

@Lukas - I'd like to bring up Haze

Stsonic4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

What are you going on about Lukas, I never said anything about the game play. I was replying to this statement from YOU.

"the difference between graphics doesn't justify the difference in price"

It was quite obvious you don't own a PC. Lot's of ps3 exclusive are great games and PC also has lot's of great games.

Str8Chaos744654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

" Crysis 3 is AVERAGE at best, its not just about graphics! What is WRONG with you PC elitists? "

But you guys slurp over every Killzone article like it's the best thing ever, especially the GRAPHICS. Hate to tell you bro but those games are average too.

starchild4653d ago

@Lukas_Japonicus

You are so biased it's ridiculous.

Crysis 3 isn't an amazing game, but it's a good game. It's hilarious to me that the same people who hype Killzone to the moon are the same people calling Crysis 3 "crap" or "average at best". Give me a break.

But the bigger point I wanted to make is that we aren't making it all about the graphics. We love games and we simply want to play them without screen tearing, jaggies, tons of pop-in and poor frame rates.

Why is it ok for people to buy expensive HDTVs and high quality Blu-ray players and audio systems to enjoy their movies at a higher quality, but if gamers want to do the same for games it is suddenly bad?

The vast majority of games that get released are multiplatform games. There is nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy those same games with higher visual fidelity and better performance, as well as enhancing those games with some of the incredible mods that are out there.

@Lukas_Japonicus

The only difference in price is the inital cost of building your own PC. PC games are cheaper, constantly go on sale, most of the DLC comes to PC for free, You don't have to pay to play online unless it's a subscription based game, and games have significantly more longevity than their console counterparts thanks to mods which can enhance graphics well beyond the competition (simplest mods) or add tons of new content or completely change the game world (more time consuming mods).

On top of that building a high end PC is easier than ever now, with the new batch of GPU's and CPU's launching. You can find AMD 8350's / i5 4570 for $150, and a HD 7950 / 660Ti for $200. Add in 16GB of RAM, a 2TB HDD, Motherboard, Case, Drives, and everything else and you can build a high end PC for just over $1,000 and it'll outperform the XB1 and PS4 .

That initial price is what get people and it seems high, but you'll be buying another console in 5 - 7 years, whereas you can slap another HD 7950 (probably $100 - $150 when you're ready) into your PC vs. another $400 - $500 for another console, and the PC will still be competitive against them.

A good PC can last you 2 console generations, and getting back to pricing the average gamer buys 6 retail games per year. Console games are $60 and PC games are $50. A PC saves the average gamer $60 a year on games or $300 for 5 years of console gaming.

5 years of gaming:
WiiU: $2,100 (Wii U, 6 retail games per year)
PS4: $2,450 (PS4, PS+, 6 retail games per year)
PC: $2,500 ($1,000 High-end PC, 6 retail games per year)
XB1: $2,600 (XB1, XBL, 6 retail games per year)

As you can see the price difference isn't as great as you think, and I hate to say this but for a lot of PC gamers that cost is even lower, because they pirate everything dropping it down to just the price of the PC.

It's all a matter of do you want top end gaming now, or are you better acceptable gaming with solid exclusives while paying for it over a period of time.

Say you never buy any games you only play the games that come bundled, download everything for free, or pirate. Even taking games out the equation:

Wii U: $300 (Play the game that comes bundled with it until the next console)
PS4: $650 (5 years PS+, so you don't have to buy any games)
XB1: $800 (5 years of XBL, hope Games for Gold continues)
PC: $1,000 (Pirate almost every game. But please don't do this)

Just wanted to show PC gaming only has a high initial cost, and over time it balances out with consoles.

10 years of gaming (since these consoles have "10 year life cycles"):
WiiU: $3,900 (Wii U, 6 retail games per year)
PC: $4,000 ($1,000 High-end PC, 6 retail games per year)
PS4: $4,500 (PS4, 10 years PS+, 6 retail games per year)
XB1: $4,700 (XB1, 10 years XBL, 6 retail games per year)

JsonHenry4654d ago

It depends on your choice really. In some cases it might depend on your finances as well.

But for those of us that want the absolute best graphics, best physics, best mods, and a whole host of other options/uses that are not available on consoles and are willing to spend the money (or build your own like most of us do) then we choose the PC. If you complain about price then stick with the consoles. Plenty of fun to be had there I will never deny that.

But for the rest of us we will play a majority of our games on the PC. Its our choice. It doesn't make us elitists because we are willing to spend more money to get better graphics and performance. It just means we practiced our choice and spent our money the way we wanted to spend it.

illty4654d ago

i dont give two shits about graphics. i play games for the story. but in topic: its good to have consoles + pc combo because consoles have really good exclusives.

Mariusmssj4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

for me here in UK it's simple:

Buying 2 next gen multi-platform games for console will me around £110(=$172), while buying 2 next gen multi-platform games for PC will cost me around £62(=$96).

So after buying 20 games I will have saved around £400/$700. TO me that's a massive difference

aquamala4654d ago

there's no difference in price once you factor in the $50 a year to play online, pay that for 8 years PS4 gaming costs the same as a $800 PC.

and before you talk about the "free" PS+ games, have a look at what PC gamers get for almost nothing on the humble bundles.

SlyGuy4654d ago

The overall cost of PC + Games tends to work out MUCH cheaper for me than console + games (Steam sales!).

Just comparing the price of console games vs pc games makes me realize it IS worth it to game on pc.

Surely, I will get PS4 for certain exclusives.

Triggytrolls4654d ago

you make good savings on the games. Kinda makes up for it tbh. Also, expirencing bf3 64 players for the first time was awesome, it felt like a completely different game.

I made the jump from x360 (had one for 6 years) to pc, I've not been on my 360 since.

3-4-54654d ago

Why can't people comprehend multiple things at the same time?

Why does it have to be one or the other?

We don't live in a black and white world.

It's all colors....all options.

Free yourself and use them all.

Game on PC, Console & Handheld will give you the best overall experience and really open your eyes to the differences and the pros and cons of each.

They all offer something the other doesn't.

PC OWNs the strategy genre though.

EXVirtual4654d ago

I know that people just love the PC mainly because of it's graphics and steam, but for me, I'm happy with $60 on a physical copy and I know it'll be very expensive to get a high end PC. Especially if you're looking for 4k. Anyways, the leap for the next gen is big enough and plus, the ninth gen will look even better.

ginsunuva4654d ago

You don't have to switch, you can always add.

GryestOfBluSkies4654d ago

pc only is not worth missing out on console exclusives, in my opinion. most people have a pc good enough to play games, even if they arent at high settings, so if you can afford a console theres no reason not to play on both console and pc

dreamoner4654d ago

Yeah.. hate those awesome console exclusives for not being on PC.

Aggesan4654d ago

I play some some PC exclusives, such as ARMA, DayZ and Guild Wars 2 on my PC. The rest I play at my PS3. After a long day at work in front of a computer I just prefer the smooth, non interruptive experience that consoles delivers.

It's not that I'm a non-technical person either, I'm a programmer specialised in game programming, but I can't help preferring my games on consoles.

Trenta274654d ago

I prefer PC. Despite the cost it took to make mine, it honestly makes me never want to touch a console again.

GarrusVakarian4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

And that attitude is why i dislike many PC gamers. Do you realise what kind of exclusive games you will miss out on with that high and mighty attitude? Sigh.

When PC's have exclusives on par with consoles (PS3 especially) then come back to me.

@Sorane, you keep telling yourself that.

sorane4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

What are these can't miss exclusives? A couple generic shooters and third person action games? I have 100 of those on my pc as it is. PC exclusives are far far away better.

@lucas sorry if you can't handle the truth

Pandamobile4654d ago (Edited 4654d ago )

90% of the games I own are multiplatform. Most of the games that interest me are multiplatform. A $15 indie game can be just as engaging and fun as a AAA console exclusive, even without the $50 million budget. Not to mention, PC has more exclusive games than any other platform (other than mobile).

Are you saying that the only games worth buying are the ones that cost $60 and are exclusive to one platform?

aquamala4654d ago

you are the only one on here with a high and mighty attitude

Trenta274654d ago

I own both a 360 and PS3. While I love the exclusives that I have played on them, PC gaming is just better. If there are issues, they can easily be fixed, there are mods, a great community, etc.

I just prefer PC to consoles. That's all. Nobody can deny the great games that consoles have, though. I love my consoles. It's just not as much as I love my PC.

I_am_Batman4654d ago

It all depends on individuall preferences. May I ask what consoles you owned/own? I personally wouldn't want to miss out on Sony's first party line-up but I'll get a better PC eventually.

If I would have the money I would get all consoles + a high end PC but since I don't I have to chose.

Trenta274654d ago

I have played just about all the exclusives on the PS3 and 360 and currently own both of them. The exclusives are amazing, but as I said to Lukas_Japonicus, PC gaming is just better to me. Maybe that's because I played consoles for some many years and only recently got into PC gaming. I don't know.

aquamala4654d ago

would ps4 owners ever want to play the cross-gen games on ps3 once they have a ps4?

exactly. why would I play multi plat games on consoles if I have a PC? that's not elitism, just what makes sense

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio33d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing33d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit33d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing33d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
