After a good nights sleep i decided not to start messing with my 60gb ps3 and waving it in the air.Its starting to look like i made the right choice.

I only did it once but after reading this i'm not gonna try it again.

If your booting up the PS3 with that on how does it overheat the system? All it's doing is booting with the fan at full power. The processer is inactivated right?

So, how is the fan blowing cool air out the back from boot harming the PS3. If this is a problem then It's a hardware design issue.

Sony has confermed it as a failsafe yes, for overheated systems. Have they confirmed that this process causes an overheat or is it a test of the fans capabilities in case of an overheat?

Even wrose does it burn out the fans? From my standpoint if the hardware kicks in like this there is a reason for it and I highly doubt it heats up to that level in 1 second flat.

The 40 gig too... I know the 60 gig idea was stupid, but it seems that the 40 gig was implemented into it and it would be stupid to implement something that would overheat your system.

Either the PS3 really DOES heat up real quick when you put it upside-down, or there is a accelerometer inside the PS3 (like in digicams) that tells it which way is up.

And as heating and hot air goes, I seriously doubt that flipping the PS3 180 degrees will cause it to overheat so rapidly...

So there must be an accelerometer inside it that checks which way is up. And if the vented side is down, it goes into panic-mode and fires up the fans to avoid too much overheating (if the vents are blocked, because they a looking at the table)...

This didnt sound good when the kid was doing it in the first place. I mean holding your ps3 upside down to rev up the fan seriously you think that was the proper way that sony tested the fans?

Whoops, better not do it again, there was alot of dust coming out of my ps3, but it's still ok, been playing warhawk and cod4 for a little while and it was perfectly fine after that.

okay i barely remember that my 60 gb ps3 was turned on for a couple sec's,and the fan started doing its thing.The 60 gb one u just need to leave on for a couple sec's or min's to do that.And mine is A-Ok guys.I Think we need to be flat out told that this feature is dangerous by sony.But Mine Works Perfect.So dont get scared!!!

I mean how does one detect that you took them measures and made your fans go wild, while over heating you GPU and CPU?

I mean that "failsafe fan function" is there for a reason and maybe the reason , is what exactly took place.

I stick to the compressed air method for now..

My March 2006-manufactured 60GB PS3 didn't even do anything when I held it upside down...the fans didn't kick in any higher....it was like normal...

Hot air was still shooting out the top of the console, and air was still being drawn in through the vents and out the back.

Basically....nothing happened at all. I guess I got a good PS3, huh?

Or maybe my PS3's fans default to a higher level upon startup...hence why I didn't really hear any difference.

You guys need to understand something.

The PS3 (ANY model) is designed to shut down upon heating up to unsafe temperature levels.

If your PS3 got too hot while doing this, or ANY other stupid experiments, it will just shut itself off.

The PS3 is designed to protect itself from damage, and rest assured it will do so when you threaten its internal components with thermal damage.

I wasn't going to comment on this as I thought it was obvious but clearly not.

If you think of the way a CPU is set up on top of it is a heatsink. Basic physics say that as heat will always rise it is designed so the heat of the cpu will pass up through the heat sink where the fan will cool it.

By turning it upside heat will still rise... but as the heatsink is now under the CPU it wont pass through it and be cooled, instead the heat will try to pass through the motherboard (which is not designed to happed) so instead of being cooled the CPU will just over heat.

As the CPU is overheating it will obviously up the fan speed in a frantic effort to cool it but of course as the heat hasnt passed through the CPU this wont happen so eventually youll get error messages and it will force a shut down.

Clearly forcing an unexpected shutdown isnt a good thing and also there is another rule with electronics where for every increase in degrees for the temperature a component operates its life span is reduced by x amount (i forget the value)

So basically even if your PS3 still boots now you may well have reduced its lifespan some what.

For future reference if a 10 year old kid tells you to do something...think twice.

If you really want to get that dust out of your ps3 just fill it up with water then flip upside down and let water pour out
Just let dry before turning back on!!!! You'll have the cleanest ps3 around. Of course I don't recommend having it plugging in at the time. My 60Gb PS3 is clean as a whistle and working great!!!!

I did it yesterday, it kicked out a lot of dust from the inside but I don't plan on doing it again.

I think the 60gb test is dangerous, but I am a little weary on the 40gb, I mean think about it for the 40gb the system is off, your not blocking any vents and all your doing is holding down the eject button, but hey I could be wrong.

If you do the fan test after your ps3 has been off for a while, there should be no heat to destroy the processor or gpu. It will just clean out the dust.

I agree with Willy Wonka. You have to be moronic to follow the advice of some kid regarding a fan test. Additionally, anything that starts with turn your PS3 upside down should raise eyebrows. If Sony intended this kind of a test to be run, it would be in your manual. If you damage your PS3 with this ridiculousness, you deserve whatever happens.

And that's why I was skeptical about trying it.

it wont damage your system just shorten fan life, like with every other fan of the sleeve/ball nature. or any electrical device for that matter. its not like the cpu and gpu are maxed out at 100%, i doubt it even boots past a bios before the fan starts going.

it wont damage your system if you say, do it once. but anything at 100% 100% of the time, is no good.

my 40gb took a dump today the fans decided to run at 100% at 72f ambient temp then locked up. now the fans run at a consistant 100%. called sony to fix that f@ker. :(

looked it up in wiki and it probably is what the sixxaxis uses to control function! but why in the console itself? HMMM?

The manual states that you only should operate your PS3 in the horizontal or vertical position. Turning it upside down and waving it all about is not recommended, mmmkay....

I knew this last night it's idiotic! It's like the morons wrapping their 360 in towels so they will get so hot the chips will affix themselves to the boards. It's obvious if you turn a electronic and it does that, it's precautionary not a CLEANING function!

Doing it like this causes the fail safe to kick in with out any problems, CPU and GPU as Sony "claim" of causing problems erm, just no, no dont be stupid. Sony have to say this basically but it wont cause a problem to your Ps3 unless you do often just do it like every 6 months or so.

I rang Sony myself n they say it is not a fan cleaning system at all its 4 when a disc should happen to get jammed in the console it will force it out damage may be caused too disc but ps3 wont be jammed i was not sure at first seen as tho it sounds like fans but they ensure it is 4 jammed discs and say it is fine an will not brake the PS3 even still tho when i did this with my ps3 it still kicked dust out so i guess it cleans it in a way so carnt complain

this only works with 40 gig and 80 gig ps3's n if u dnt belive me ring thm yourself an they will tell u its 4 jammed discs u will find the number on the back off all PS3 games

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
