Yoshida Reveals That PS4 Will Only Support 4 Controllers Simultaneously

Sony Worldwide President Shuhei Yoshida has stated in several tweets that the PS4 will only allow for four controllers to be simultaneously connected.

GarrusVakarian4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

"only support 4 controllers"

I don't think there's any need for more than 4. Ive never used more than 2 personally.

NewMonday4631d ago

pre-order canceled

I demand 8 controller support and 8 player split-screen

/S

sephiroth4204631d ago

8 player splitscreen would be great! but i guess tvs will have to go up in size before thats possible

ZodTheRipper4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

I actually played PES with more than 4 people several times ...but I can live without that. I suppose this could be changed with a later update? This seems like a software issue to me.

boing14631d ago

^^
Same here. Too bad. I'm not going to miss it though.

Linzoid4631d ago

Gutted about this news! I love the 3 v 3 games on FIFA. It was annoying when they reduced from 8 to 7 from PS2 to PS3.

However this will no stop me picking up my PS4 at launch :-)

FamilyGuy4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

That would actually be pretty legit if tvs were all 80+ inches and games were in 4k resolution.

The future...

Also, this is a hardware thing, not software, Sony only has four colors for the lightbar on the DS4 so it couldn't go up because of that lol j/k

iamnsuperman4631d ago

8 player split screen? Hell yer. Imagine a game where the more kills you get the more screen space you get over the others. Flipping awesome fun

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34631d ago

Didn't you clowns talk smack in the XB1 article of how they were copying sony with 8 controllers? And now you're applauding a downgrade which sony has done? LOL

malokevi4631d ago

If you can do duel screen, 8 is awesome. Also, for sports games, 8 is good.

Not that it matters to me in the end, just sayin...

SilentNegotiator4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

Are you guys really going to just laugh this off?

PS3 had 7 player support or something like that; why the heck not PS4? As underutilized as same-screen multiplayer is these days, there's no excuse to just DROP the number of controllers supported at a time.

This is bad for sports titles, party games, and all sorts of innovative possibilities.

gaffyh4631d ago

@Silent - It's only really utilised in certain sports games. I can't think of any other genre that used more than four controllers. Not actually a huge issue considering multiplayer online was way more popular this gen. I used three controllers on LBP a few times but no more.

I admit more is of course better for people who play sports games like that, but it probably doesn't affect too many people.

WeedyOne4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

The PS3 could support more than 4 controllers, I think it was 7 or 8 controllers.

I bet the PS4 controller is limited to 4 players because of the added move functions, more than 4 controllers at once is probably too much for the camera to track accurately.

No big deal!

Nizulo4631d ago

I was going to convert to PS4... but this, this is... NO BIGGIE.

Hellsvacancy4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

Damn, the PS4 is doooooooooooooomed

Ot, i've never used more than two controllers on my PS3, now my son is getting older that'll change next gen to three

thereapersson4631d ago

The only time this comes in handy is sports gaming. Having the option of up to 7 different colors in NBA 2k for my character makes it easy to identify a unique appearance, color-wise. Not sure what we will get now that the maximum is 4.

shivvy244631d ago

The max I have used is 4 with family/friends ! MW2 , Ratchet all4one and fifa

Andronix4631d ago

I've played a Motorstorm fame in 4 player split screen and that was lots of fun. But I can't think of why you would want to play an 8 person game as each person's 8th of the screen would be really small. But it is important to have split screen for local games when friends visit so I would like to see more games with this feature.

But who can afford 8 controllers?! Who can afford 4?!

B-radical4631d ago

4 player on older consoles was fun

DiRtY4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

8 > 4

humbleopinion4631d ago

Well... while more never hurts, I'm much happier to see that Sony pushed for 8 GB RAM over 8 controllers support.

FamilyGuy4631d ago

I dn't think the word "only" needs to be in that sentence. 4 is a standard for limit for most local co-op games. Sports games are the only ones I know of that ever exceed 4.

husomc4631d ago

i've played FIFA, with upto 6 ppl together, must be a limitation caused by the audio channel for the speaker in the controller

Liefx4631d ago

I understand where people come from, but it is nice to be able to switch on my 4 controllers, then pop on the Move controllers without having to turn off the other controllers. Or what about Guitar hero devices?

I found it handy to have 7 slots for devices.

Mounce4631d ago

The ONLY time more than 4 controllers is EVER used is in Sports games like FIFA. Outside of that? Pointless.

Wizziokid4631d ago

Don't think I've ever used more than 4 anyway?

Thisisjuju4631d ago

Nor I. I cant think of any game Ive ever played that has supported 8 local/splitscreen players.

The Meerkat4631d ago

Bomberman maybe? but that's not split screen.

I remember 5 player on the Amiga.
4 on pads and 1 on keyboard.

Gazondaily4631d ago

There isn't really a need for more than 4 controllers anyway unless they release a crazy version of Micro Machines or Power Stone.

Thisisjuju4631d ago

God I would love to see a Micro Machines game.

Linzoid4631d ago

8 players on Micro Machines V3 on PS1 was one of my all time favorite local MP games!

Wish Codemasters would release a next gen version or a HD remake

MariaHelFutura4631d ago

I love when people mention Power Stone.

Regis4631d ago

You and Septic should get married at this rate I see the 2 major people on this site agreeing mind blown

4631d ago
Halochampian4631d ago

Some sports games could be could with it. It's not a big deal, but I could see myself and a group of friends playing some FIFA or NHL together all on one machine.

The PS3 had support up to 7 so I thought it would easily have been featured in the ps4 but I guess since they(developers) never utilized it, they thought the feature could be cut.

Kayant4631d ago ShowReplies(1)
paul-p19884631d ago

PS3 supported 7 if i remember rightly, yet i don't think many people used that many at one time. 4 is probably the perfect amount, more would have been nice, but i along with most people only tend to have 3 friends in the same place as me at once.

Besides, with online gaming getting another massive boost this gen i doubt most people will even be using 2 controls on the same console...

NukaCola4631d ago

Yeah PS3 did 7 but I never used more than 3 at a time on LBP.

MrSwankSinatra4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

honestly i never knew that until now. i've only ever used two.

coolasj4631d ago

Technically, I believe the PS3 supports "7 simultaneous Bluetooth devices". So the 4 controller thing is fine, but I want to know the upper bound on Bluetooth devices total.

RevXM4631d ago (Edited 4631d ago )

Hopefully not.
4 controllers, and perhaps 4 headsets at the same time, maybe some would like Mouse and key and a TV/BD remote at the same time too(not having to reconnect all the time). so about 10-12 total should be the max useable/sensible amount of units. Any more units would be ridiculous right?

I wont die if it doesnt though, I have barely used 4 BT units at a time on the ps3 so for me its allright as of now.

boing14631d ago

Happened to me once in whole generation. We played PES for 7 players. Lots of fun. Not going to miss it though.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8512d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele11d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk11d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay11d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10112d ago (Edited 12d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit11d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg11d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10111d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14911d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I wonder if he tried to stop Shawn Layden from starting it?

Profchaos13d ago

Technically horizon came out in 2020 under Jim Ryan who took over in 2019

It's hard to tell who initiated the project but the Decima engine makes porting to PC fairly easy so who honestly knows if this was Jim's initiative or not I get the feeling it was

Redemption-6413d ago (Edited 13d ago )

It's actually not hard at all. Shawn Layden said he started it. Shawn Layden has confirmed that he was behind the strategy to bring PlayStation exclusive games to PC. Regardless of whether you hate Jim or not this wasn't his idea. It happened during his watch, but it was started before he took over. Below are links with him confirming it started with him

Reaper22_14d ago

Fake news. He didnt say that. This video was posted on YouTube and on here they decided to change the title. Shame on you.

i81duce14d ago

At 5:16, he literally states the thing you say he doesn’t say. Did you even watch the video?

GotGame81813d ago

Sony already said they weren't porting to PC anymore. Or, at least that is how I interpreted a couple of articles. I think if it were not for Helix, that may not have happened.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7719d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga19d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199218d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga18d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman18d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger18d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box19d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion18d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7219d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7518d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit18d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14919d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7719d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
