...it just overheats your console :) Whoever called this trick 'a fan test' is a moron. You don't have to flip it, just cover ventilation holes with a hand and it will jump to a highest gear. 40GB has a fan test, 60GB don't.

i have my PS3 horizontal (laying down) so theres no real way for dust to get inside in the first place just lie ontop of it so theres no real reason for me to do this

Damn it really works...once the highest fan level turned on a big cloud of dust shot out of the back...it was quite a work out holding the system long enough for it to turn on too. But still I wouldn't recommend doing this all the time...it's probably the last time I'll do it

Edit: And as far as the system running so amazingly faster after doing this...no, that was a big overexaggeration. It cleans the dust out of your system and that's it.

no dust came out. Kinda useless. Just get canned air. Also make sure you hold it steady. I did it with a disc inside, but you really shouldnt. As long as your not on the bluray icon yoru disc wont spin.

THE VENT IS PLACED ON THE SIDE BECAUSE ITS ACROSS FROM THE FAN SO AIR PASSES OVER THE GPU AND CPU.

By turning it upside down you allow the heat to congregate to the very top of the PS3 melting the friggin processor and GPU. The fan was not meant to push air against it's intended direction.

It senses it's overheating BECAUSE IT IS. All you idiots trying this ARE hurting the PS3, it cycles the fans because it detects air is not flowing to the processor and GPU.

Report this story now before more people get stupid ideas.

My 20GB started it's fans to a certain point, but I held it for 3 minutes and wouldn't go any faster. However, when I turned it back on, the fans were normal.

I've noticed that my launch PS3 manufactured in October 06 has been getting a bit loud lately...

Holy Sh*t!! It DOES work, my PS3 kicked out so much freaking dust out the back and bottom it was crazy. Then when I put it right side up, it kicked out more dust in my face, we had some words.

By flipping your ps3 and putting it upside down, all the heat is going up tricking the sensors into thinking the Ps3 is over heating, thats why the fan keeps getting stronger and stronger cause more heat it traveling up the system.

So this is not a fan test....and thats why many of you don't see dust coming out the system, please don't do this, it can mess up the fan in the long run, if your ps3 is dusty clean it simple as that.

for all the above reasons and then some just go get a cheap can of air and spray dust it out, vaccum the hell outta it, get an air compressor (like me) with a air sparayer and boom same thing (just try not to go full pressure on the air though) and it all does the same thing

The fan comes on due to heat. This is a fact. I can't believe that people would be a kid hyped up on Monster. Can you imagine telling Sony Service what you did when you call for help. Think about the silence on the phone when you tell the service rep. that a kid overdosed on power drinks recommended the procedure.

You are overheating ur ps3,dont believe me?,then place ur hand on the right hand side and ull find its warm/hot.now think about gravity and how heat rises,now considering these factors,this means that your making the hot air go back into the ps3, when u do this little upside down pony trick on ur beloved ps3 ur in actuality making the air thats meant to be dispursed sideways or upwards start rising straight back into the console.,well anyway ive tryed so its up to uz what uz do,but i wouldnt.peace out.......

I did it and it worked fine it got a little bit of dust out.. I only tried it cause my room is pretty dusty, behind my PS3, 360 and my PC. It gets pretty loud i don't know if i would recommend it still but it worked fine for me

Somebody prove it? All you are doing is reversing your console and bringing on the fans to full to blow out the dust...there is no way you will overheat your console if you do this just once...remember you are only doing this for less than a min...and it will blow out all the dust that compressed air could not get. This trick does work...but you do not want to use it all the time.

The 40\80 GB PS3 fan test is better, its unknown why that fan test does not work in the 60 GB.

There is no way you are going to void your warranty..because why would you even tell sony that you did this test? Why would you be so stupid...

As long as you are no going to open up your PS3...you will not void the warranty...come on people use your brains.

You can not scratch a DVD PS2\PS1 or Bluray disc in the PS3 drive...but you should not do this test with a disc in the drive.

You will not overheat your PS3 by doing this test...because the PS3 will shutdown if it overheats...and doing this test will not get the PS3 to overheat.

But the test works...but I would not do it too often...just make once every six months or so...and you will be safe.

No it's not, it was clearly added as some kind of hardware feature in the 40GB and later models.

I really wouldn't risk doing this, regardless of how infrequently you do it, as a good amount of heat must be building up inside there to make the fan hit top speed in such a short amount of time and we don't know how much punishment the hardware can take (lets face it, the 360 can melt itself without any external help so it's very possible that this can do some damage to the PS3).

Both of these methods seem shady to me. This one sends all the heat to the part of the PS3 that is supposed to be the coolest and the other fan test worries me as it could wear out the fan motor. The best and recommended way to clean without worrying about damaging anything is in the PS3s manual. Use a low powered vacuum or if your not sure just hold the vacuum at a distance from the vent.

I felt the fans going super loud, but no dust released. Ive had this console since Nov.17/06 and its in a very low ventilated area, there must be dust inside. Theres only dust outside, is there something I i wrong?

You can see clearly that on the 40GB fan test the fan rotate on full power immediately, when on this test the fan slowly accelerate.
It seems like the chunky boy is just messing with the temp. sensor to make the console think it's getting worm. its BS.

This guy leaves his PS3 on for a long period of time (as he said so in the video) allowing the system to heat up. Just leaving the 60gb system running heats my room, with the window open. So this system generates a lot of heat. He then turns it upside-down and in doing so probably makes the PS3 push air in a direction it wasnt designed to do. All this is doing is heating the system to a point where it needs to use all its fans, sure it may clean out the dust but it is "over-heating". The PS3 is designed to shut off if it is over-heated to a certain point to avoid hardware failure. I wouldnt recommend using this method.

Compressed air. This one is a tricky subject. One it blows air/dust into the environment (your PS3/computer/laptop etc.) and can void a warranty. It can also damage the fans directly, if you spray air into the system you are forcing the fans in the oppisite direction they were intended and at a greater RPM than they were tested for, thus you can break your fans by spraying compressed air into your system. The PS3 manual suggests using a low powered vacuum as this sucks air/dust out and will not damage the fans.

Why do people think that these fan tests were designed to blow dust out of the system?

All he did was reverse the heat flow of the system and it made the PS3 get hotter ...thats why the fans kicked on ... I really don't think they intended for the fan test to be performed on the PS3 60GB that way ...it may blow out dust but I bet he's burning something up

I don't think I will be trying this out with my 60GB PS3 tbh. Actually cleaning out the dust from your deaktop PC for instance can make a difference actually.

Dude why not just get canned air? The kind they used to clean keyboards, that's what I do. I dust my entertainment center everyday and I clean my PS3 once a week, I've had it since December 06 and it still looks and runs like new.

I would be weary about doing this. Heat rises and gets trapped in the upper half of the PS3, I would not be suprised if the fan was now sucking in cool air and pretty much blowing straight back out, while PS3 gets hotter and hotter.
This is unlikely to be a Fan Test, more like the temperature rises gradually and the fans kick in accordingly.

If it's not noted in the instruction manual as a cleaning procedure or fan test, then why do it. Best thing to do is use a vacuum around the vents and wipe the rest of the dirt/dust with a cloth. After you've used the vacuum, maybe use some canned air around the ports and vents or use a clean (unused) tooth brush. If Sony reps also know nothing about this then that should give a clue to not perform this task as shown in the video.

I do believe that on this particular video (60 gig model), you are traping heat inside of the console in which the fans kick in and spin faster in order to dissapate the extra heat. So by doing this I believe you are in risk of damaging your console.

One last note, a lot of 60 gig PS3's are probably almost up on the 1 year Sony warranty. So why not just get some canned air and take a screw driver to the PS3 (open up the case) and clean it out the proper way? Assuming you didn't take out an extended warranty from the retailer you purchased it from. I know!!! It may suck, but this is really the best way to do it (if you're out of warranty).

Stop! Don't use compressed gas on your PS3! Use a vacuum instead. And if your PS3 is out of warranty whats the big deal? AS long as you do not do this trick for more than a few minutes whats the big deal? I say go for it!

Whatever happened to using a can of air and dusting off the system from time to time. Back in the day to fight dust on are PC we made air filters out of swifter pads that block about 50% or more of the dust from entering the system while still allowing air to flow. I used a standard air filter and cut and made small pieces to fit over the vents to block the dust and still allow air in and out without the dust.

This is not a smart move at all, because of the damage you can do to the fans by making them run at max for extended time you could blow out the fans and be lefted up a creek.

Used the time tested ways of cleaning electronics, one is buy some compressed air in a can they come in three packs and give it a good blow every now and then. Now that the laughter has stopped after that comment the next is the vacuum to remove dust or my way which is make a homemade air filter for your PS3 to fit over the vents.

I do not recommend this at all, I done a lot of crazy things to electronics to test for vering things and this I would not do.

Seriously, why risk breaking something worth a few hundred dollars in an effort to clean it when there are better ways to go about it? EVERYONE should have a vacuum cleaner with hose or handheld vac, and anyone with a computer, console or any other ventilated electronics device should have a can of compressed air.

Blew a good bit of dust out, only held in air for 25-30 seconds, turned it over, done.

I have the 40 gig, I tried the fan test for the 40 gig, all it did was basically instead of taking air in, it was throwing it out at full speed. Sounded just like my 360:P

That is NOT a fan test. That's artificially overheating your PS3 by putting your hand over it, so that the fans increase in speed. That's the stupidest thing I've seen.

I may have to give it a go since I have a couple more years on my in-store warranty. Not that I consider this to be a cause for any malfunctions, getting rid of a little extra dust never hurt anything.

I guess, after, the previous post about 40gb fan test, somehow will get to sony and they will include somewhere in xmb some sort of option to do that safely.

I have a 60gb with over a year and i'll not risk it out, don't think it safe.

If you see the video carefuly you'll notice that we uses one of the hands not to hold the ps3, but to cover up the air exit, so the ps3 has to speed up the fan to decrease the heat inside. I don't thing that is healthy.

Earlier my friend was nagging at me when I told him my 360 was having issues and he was like "oh that's because you don't take care of your sh*t". And I was like "ok first off yes I do very much so, and what about the other hundreds of thousands of people who've had multiple machines?" then he's all "I know, I'm on my 3rd one".

if i'm turning my machine upside-down. i wonder if sony will be able to add the 40gig's fan test to the 60 gig via a software update.

i use a dust protector kit i found on ebay to help keep my 60 gig clean, but i know its dust filter is no use for the 40 gig model as it doesn't have the correct intake on the front. the kit's filter collects loads of dust which i can just blow out of the window every so often.

and it doesn't work on PAL PS3's.

That fan didn't sound anything like the 40gb test. This one sounds more like the ps3 is trying not to overheat. I wouldn't recommend this at all.

I mean Seriously people have you ever overclocked a pc !? I did often and a little extra heat didnt kill it. A ps3 building up a little heat for 30 sec to get the fan going isnt going to kill a ps3 either. I dont know how effective its gonna be at taking the dust out but it cant hurt.

You m*r*n, if you ignore this warning your PS3 CPU will fry. It is not a false alarm. As UnasFortuna was saying, because of the position you are placing your console, the heat moves to an area where the fans are less efficient, and the heat rises in you CPU, so the fans kicks it to maximum trying to save the life of you PS3.
I wonder how many people have are crying right now because they listen to that m*r*n saying "Don't worry, you can ignore the message saying that your PS3 is overheating... duh..." and fried their PS3...

I highly do not recommend any fan testing at all. Regardless of it availability to the public eye. It is only used for service repair techs to analyze a faulty system.

The only way to clean you're PS3 is keep the area clean where you're PS3 is situated. Dust the PS3 regularly and if you need to extract the dust particles, use a vacuum on low or medium settings. This is even stated in the PS3 owners manual.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
