Does anyone know if this is a significant upgrade from a Haswell i7-4770?

I currently have a first gen i7 860 and was going to upgrade to the haswell. I'm wondering the difference between the Haswell 4770 and the Ivy-E 4820

RedDeadLB4666d ago

The only difference would be the price of the motherboard needed for the 4820, which is a hell of a lot higher than a 1150 board.

I'd get the 4770k and proper cooling.

Only get the mobo + 4820 if you're planning on upgrading to a six core Ivy-E later on, because those CPUs are really the only reason to have the 2011 socket in the first place.

Thank you Buljo, I'll stick with the Haswell plan. Those extra threads on Ivy-E are tempting though but not with over $600 to me. Maybe in four years.

Oh and I wanted to mention that it looks like the Ivy-E's may run hotter than Haswell, as it's 1st gen it's kind of expected. 84w vs 130w

Surely they keep with the 1155 boards?

TABSF4665d ago

Of course they'll keep with the other platforms.

Intel ran LGA775 and LGA771 platforms till 2008
then they ran LGA1156 and LGA1366 platforms till 2012
LGA1155 and LGA2011 are both still supported

However Intel currently flagship platforms are LGA1150 and LGA2011

Getting a Sandybrige-E or Ivybridge-E would be pretty foolish, it's marketed to extreme enthusiasts and I mean extreme.
I would recommend Ivybridge or Haswell, much cheaper and extremely good performance.
