How many Mega Drives? And other multi-function consoles

GamesAsylum: "This might have passed you by – the Internet was pretty restrained over it – but there was a bit of a fuss around the initial Xbox One reveal, and how Microsoft gave an awful lot of attention to non-games stuff. That wasn’t always the way though. Until recent generations, multimedia was little more than a second thought – and further back it was quite the radical idea that a console should do much more than play games.

So let’s have a look at some of the wonky attempts over the years at integrating consoles with ‘other stuff’"

they forgot the most epic multifunction console on the planet.....

the Pioneer laserActive model CLD-A100.

here is what it could do.
play laserdisc movies
play genesis carts
play sega cd's
play sega mega-ld's (laserdisc games)
play turbografx hucards
play turbografx cd's
play turbografx super-cd's
play turbografx turbo-ld's (laserdisc games)
it was a karaoke machine

AND it could even let you watch arcade laserdisc games like space ace, dragon's lair (although you couldnt play them) and some have even gone so far as to adapt the 32X to work with it.

It is truly an EPIC piece of game console history. and yes, i have 1.

Where the f**k can I get one? I'd throw my 360 out the window for something that could do what you're describing.

Next gen can't compare to the epicness of the 16 bit wars.

Edit: Damn, just checked Ebay and they have 2. One from Japan for $500 and the other one is broken for $250.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for one of those.

think the whole article is pointless tbh.... multimedia functions and extras are always good for a console. just gamers/ms gamers didnt want to hear about any of that stuff since ms is just shoving kinect down their throughts for the last 3-4 years(?)

True enough. Before they turned it into an action game with re4

Hmm looks great but suspect. I don’t know how you’d fit all the textures within the game size and how it would perform once you’ve got an enemy on the screen as well as yourself. Never mind multiple enemy’s. I don’t think this would work on genuine hardware.
