SONY’s jab: Warranted or Unnecessary?

Larry from DJ Podcasts writes "Group CEO of SONY Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, was rather blunt when he said: “While others have shifted their message and changed their story, we were consistent in maintaining policies and a model that is fair and in tune with consumer desires.” Not surprisingly, this statement has become wood for the pyre when it comes to the next gen console wars."

Sony definitely has every right to say what they said, for both reasons mentioned in the article. Microsoft has brought all of this upon themselves.

Raf1k14659d ago

I agree that they have the right to promote themselves though I don't think they were trying take a jab at MS for the sake of it.

Sony are in the process of promoting their new console and by making this particular statement, it's guarenteed that most publications will be writing about it. This in turn makes Sony's consistency more widely known to the general public and will improve consumers perception of the them and their new console.

There's more to it than just a war of words between two competitors.

NewMonday4659d ago

MS had it coming

They did it all the time this generation and at every opportunity, the Sony guys feel its time for payback

snipab8t4659d ago

They said this to distract the media from their lackluster Gamescom performance lol.

RandomDude6554659d ago

Sorry you don't like games.
Maybe you can watch more tv on your GAMES console.

cr33ping_death4659d ago

Yeah because the list of exclusive dlc sure had the media excited for MS's confrence...... Oh wait... MS didnt put on a confrence for their DLC.....

NewMonday4659d ago

Sorry

Who was holding a closed conference hidden in a basement

True_Samurai4659d ago

@cchum but we have both games and TV lmao, music, apps

DonFreezer4658d ago

"bluray not needed"
"cell bad for games"
"psn is a bad imitator of xbox live"
"crazy ken"

This is tame to the crap that came out of Microsoft this gen.

roboteye4659d ago

Let's also not forget about all those google bashing ads MS likes to put out.

RandomDude6554659d ago

And Apple with their crappy Surface promotion.

Blaze9294659d ago (Edited 4659d ago )

i love how no one seems to care about Nintendo in this "fight". Sony clearly was only referring to Microsoft - in which case, it wasn't a necessary jab. That one sentence could have completely been left out. just my opinion.

E3 was fun. The video was fun. But this is 2 months later and they're still at it comparing themselves to Microsoft and the Xbox One. Only Microsoft and the Xbox One. Come on now. If this were any other company saying remarks like this (that added NOTHING to the show) about Sony, the attitude about this would be very different.

I personally don't care - they aren't talking to me directly. No feelings. But I think we all need to be fair if Microsoft starts coming back with the heat. Hell, Nintendo too. If competition is what we all truly "want" then don't get mad at the smack talk from ANYONE.

HarryMasonHerpderp4659d ago (Edited 4659d ago )

Hmm.
Sony are still trying to sell the PS4 to potential buyers, they're still trying to say hey check out the PS4 and not the Xbox. So it is still kinda relevant to be taking shots in my opinion.
Also it's very entertaining lol

Microsoft were also taking shots before E3 (we'll kill Sony at E3) don't forget, the last few months though seem to have made them a little more humble.

pwnsause_returns4659d ago

Yea, so much for killing Sony at E3.... It was really the other way around actually...

NewZealander4658d ago

Nintend-Who?

ohhh that company that made the N64....yeah what ever happened to those guys eh!

Excalibur4659d ago

How is speaking the truth a jab?
People need to place their sensitivities to the side and understand this is a business, in business competitors will always point out their positives and their competitors negatives,it's always been that way and it will continue to be that way.

gaelic_laoch4659d ago (Edited 4659d ago )

Point is SONY should not be even comparing themselves to the Xbone!

One is a state of the art games console while the other is a ????? Frankentertainonsole

iamnsuperman4659d ago (Edited 4659d ago )

Unnecessary but they do have the right to boast about having a consistent message.

edit "I didn’t mention the influence on non-core gamers, ie casuals, because they aren’t relevant to the point. None of those people are paying attention at the moment and unless SONY continues to hammer that message home, especially in N. America, it would be pointless anyway. Preaching to the choir is just that, they need to get that same message out to the masses."

This is an important point. People who buy at launch are most likely going to be us (the obsessed gamers who go on these sites). It is us who make a product seem popular and worth the more casual gamers attention. We will carry a system for a couple of months after launch. Then the others come into play

shivvy244658d ago

i found it unnecessary but funny !

TimeSkipLuffy4659d ago

unnecessary. I don't care what MS does. I want them to concentrate on their hardware and games!
I don't even care what movies they are producing as well.
I just want to see some amazing games that I can play in the next months/year!
I know you can deliver it Sony. So focus!!!

n4rc4659d ago

Sony should focus on promoting their strengths.. Not bagging on their competition like it will translate into sales for them.

Ya that ms exec made some comments too that I do t approve of.. But that was a interview.. Not a press conference..

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8526d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele25d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk25d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay25d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10126d ago (Edited 26d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit25d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg25d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10125d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14926d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle39d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit39d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog39d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog39d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad39d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_39d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage39d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda39d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
