The Problem With Wii U

The Wii U isn’t doing so well on the market right now. The lack of games and the underpowered hardware compared to the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One is bound to hold it back to some extent. With that said, there are still some ways Nintendo can get pass the problem with Wii U. In this GVN Discussion the staff takes a look at three of the options Nintendo can do to help solve the problem the Wii U is having.

Right now it's games. But they are coming.

dedicatedtogamers4660d ago

IMO, it isn't the games.

The problem is Nintendo. Their core philosophies need to change.

Summons754660d ago (Edited 4660d ago )

Their core philosophies are gamers and the quality of their game first business scams and ripping off gamers never.

They don't need to change, others need to adopt that again.
Here is an example

Nintendo - will take necessary delays and pushback in order to ensure the purchaser buys a full product with the quality that they are known for.

EA/Activsion - will skip steps, copy paste, and cut content giving gamers either low quality games or games with only half or less of the actual content and force gamers to buy that content they should have had to start.

Now which would you like to play? A game that is full and has quality or a game that may have quality but have no content and rely on online for "replayability" instead of going off the games merits and quality to keep a gamer playing.

The answer is clearly the first one.

Sure the WiiU may need more games but it has a couple handfuls of great games now. When the Xbone and PS4 will be in the exact same position a year after they come out, they will have a couple handfuls of great games but not all devs will be fully onboard next gen with support and a bigger install base of people still with ps3/360's.

Sad truth but that's how EVERY console launch works....it did with PS3/360 and ps2/xbox before that. Gamers are just selfish now and most don't remember or haven't been a gamer long enough to know what a huge console launch is like.

Look at the 3DS, poor launch and hardly any games. A year later games started flowing (and a much needed price drop). The Vita has been around a year and a half and still has hardly a handful of games.

WiiU is cheaper than both ps4 and xbone so it will still be a competitor especially now they are starting to get their games rolling.

(NOTE FOR TROLLS: I have a WiiU and play it everyday, I also own a ps3 and plan on buying a ps4)

@dedicated

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's their "core philosophies".

There are a bunch of things wrong with the Wii U and Nintendo.

1. Games. This will be answered in full by E3 2014 since NIntendo has a solid exclusives coming out basically once every month from now until E3 2014.

2. Price. $300 - $350 isn't a great value for the Wii U considering the competition. $199 PS360, and $399 PS4 (XB1 at $500, doesn't affect Wii U value). Only Nintendo fans see the value in the Wii U, and as the previous 4 generations proved they're a declining number of about 20 - 30 million gamers (based on GameCube). Nintendo has an E for everyone family image, but $350 for the only viable SKU is not family pricing and they need to drop down to that $249 sweet spot that Wii had for better sales and to be considered a better value, and it needs to happen before years end (December would be best since Mario comes out then).

3. Management. Nintendo needs 2 management teams. The guys they have now need to stick to handhelds, and they need to hire a new group of people who understand the evolution of the home console scene, so the GameCube and Wii U don't happen again. The Wii U should have came out in 2011 when it was first announced. The Wii U got delayed to 2012, had a solid launch, but had no games for 8 months and blamed the transition to HD for the delay even though they saw M$ and Sony went through the same thing with the PS3 and 360. The Wii U's online is by far the worse of the Big 3 even after this being Nintendo's 2 online console, and having a blueprint from both M$ and Sony. These are all unacceptable, and they need to get rid of them for the home console division and replace them with people who understand this playing field, technically (no more underpowered consoles), connectively (a true online experience), exclusivity (New home consoles IP's and equal 3rd party support).

I'm not saying Nintendo needs to compete pound for pound, but they need to have a console that competes on the same playing field, while continuing to develop games that make them Nintendo.

The Wii U's biggest problem is Nintendo's top management. The 3Ds can easily be marketed to kids especially considering it now cost $150 - $200 (XL), plays Mario and all the other Nintendo games, easily child friendly, and can be taken anywhere (basically babysitter number 2).

Let's talk a out this in 2014 again after xb1 ps4 launch. Wiiu had at least downwards compatibility, the other new consoles don't have that. There are some launch titles but will that be enough? We simply don't know yet. What happened to wiiu might as well happen to ps4 xb1. Best indication for that is Gta v not even being announced yet. Most enthusiastic gamers here will get one of the new systems anyway but those are not the masses that count.
The wiiu has great value and some really big titles coming. If you don't own one I don't even want to hear anything. the

A console doesn't need games no sir ;D

Theyellowflash304660d ago

Nintendo's core philosophies need to change while the PS3 lost 3 billion for Sony and the Nintendo made 88 million profit off their gaming division with a lack of software.

Nintendo just needs games. People said the same thing with the 3DS....and look at it now.

@jeff
Youre the same guy who chewed me out for criticizing nintendo's self destructive and ineffective piracy policies, and now youre calling me a DRONE?
Bayonetta 2, which i wont compare to the first game, but by far the best looking action game of last gen, GOW:A. Bayonetta 2 is confirmed to run in 1080p and 60fps, while GOW:A is 720p and fluctuates around 35-45 fps. Hell, compare bayonetta 2 to platinum's last game (which came out in 2013), metal gear rising. Bayonetta 2 looks miles better, and at a higher resolution. So in its second year, 2014, the unoptimized wii u is outgunning the best looking action games of last gen by a respectable margin. Not bad, and certainly not last gen.
@sa925
The system is selling at a loss, therefore it isnt technically overpriced. And its clear the system is more than capable at what its striving to do, which is definitely not be a ps4.

NYC_Gamer4660d ago

Wii U will be fine once it gets more quality software

LOL_WUT4660d ago

I agree on the quality part but let's not forget a price right about now would really help out. ;)

Tales RPG addict4660d ago

The problem is simple and the same as the Dreamcast.
Right now there is a heavier weight of anticipation for the PS4 & XB1 so many gamers are skipping Wii U to get one or both of the other systems
The same thing happened 13 years ago with the Dreamcast, and it suffered heavily cause many people wanted a PS2 since it was a gaming machine and a DVD player but thats aside the point.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer70d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot70d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno70d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay70d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno68d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK69d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
