Casual vs Hardcore Gamers

In recent years there has been the discussion of what is a casual gamer and what is a hardcore gamer. Of course there have been simple answers to these questions such as, casual gamers being those who play in their spare time with the majority of the games being played on their phone. Hardcore gamers have been painted as the Call of Duty or World of Warcraft players who sit at their consoles or computers for at least 6 hours everyday. But then, where does that leave the rest of us?

Casual gamer: Candy Crush or Angry Birds...easily accessible phone games like that. Only play when bored or waiting. 1 hour a day.

Normal gamer: FPS like COD... Or GTA, God of War, Portal, Mario games. Most if not all video games played more than usual over 2 hours a day.

Hardcore gamers: Any game played at excess (5 hours a day) with extreme passion and addiction. Yes hardcore angry birds is possible.

My highly unserious opinion ↑

@TripC50

I somewhat agree, but I would only class 'hardcore' (a term I seriously f***ing hate) as people who play for competition purposes, to gain sponsors and make a living. People who play fighting games and learn frame rates of every move or players who have clans that attend tournaments for example.

Outside of that, the rest of us are core gamers or casual.

Ya know, you're right. I agree with you on that. Totally forgot about professional gamers!

thehitman4662d ago

What you describe is a professional gamer which should would be a sub-category of a hardcore gamer. They arent the only types of hardcore gamer I would consider myself a hardcore gamer but I dont run around doing tournys. I play almost all types of games am very competitive, play as my main hobby and I think trip description of each type is spot on.

Having an addiction or passion for something doesn't really equate to 'hardcore'.

Gaming is a time consuming hobby, that is just the nature of the beast. You can sink hours into a game without even noticing. I must have played in excess of 12,000 fights online on Soul Calibur 4 yet I would never say i'm hardcore as I know that in a real offline tournament like Evo, I would get schooled.

These gamers are the real hardcore, for many it's their life. They alienate friends and family in the pursuit of making a career out of it. Move into accomodation together with the sole purpose of training for several weeks, 12-16 hours a day. Eating, sleeping and breathing competition.

You can be a devoted gamer, devoted to your hobby and passionate but hardcore is a whole new level. Check out the Frag - The Movie documentary on youtube, it's an eye opener.

you're a gamer. end of. You touched upon the only difference between casual and core: time spent. Doesn't matter if you play several types of games or only one. 5 hours a day playing soccer games is hardcore amigo. I couldn't do it.

My buddy and I watched his daughter play some Barbie horse game on her DS. We tabulated that she spent nearly 100 hours playing it the first month. That little girl is hardcore! I seriously doubt anyone here could put that many hours into that game.

Another friend of mine puts in maybe 6-10 hrs a week if he's lucky. But he only plays RTSs on PC like Civ, Starcraft II, and the Total War series. He considers himself a casual gamer because gaming isn't a priority right now in his life.

This compartmentalizing casual/core gamers only became popular this gen because fanboys who couldn't back up their ridiculous claims with actual facts had to resort to straw man arguments.

ArthurJKlarke4662d ago

Uhm.. the casuals of old are now considered HARDCORE and have superiority complex vs the new casuals while hating on "PC ELITISTS" because they consider themselves hardcore which in turn diss on PC players with weak machines

What a mess!

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman29d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
