Microsoft Makes Sharing the New Next-Gen Buzzword

CCC Says: "For months, the gaming community has been making fun of Microsoft for dropping the ball. Hell, it seemed like it would never end. While I am not ready to completely say MS gets a free pass, I have to admit the company and system are starting to finally look viable for next-gen."

Sharing something you own (whether digital or physical) should be a right, not a "bonus feature" worthy of praise.

Also, let's point out that they mentioned nothing in their most recent statement about "lending" games which is much different than sharing. More to come I suppose.

I'm an Xbox One supporter with a pre-order, but this kind of publicity stunt should be seen for what it is.

Fireseed4665d ago

Sharing however is not something you usually identify with digital licenses, from the interview released today they clearly want to make digital as easy to understand and open as physical.

JokesOnYou4665d ago

"I have to admit the company and system are starting to finally look viable for next-gen."

-Really, come on E3 alone proved X1 to be a viable console for next gen, the type of folks that thought micro was going to pack up and go home just because the drm mess are the only ones disappointed and still searching for reasons to hate the X1.

JC_Denton4665d ago

@JokesOnYou

I think the reason why people still hate on the Xbox One is because of Microsoft's track record with gaming on their consoles so far: They support the console for its first several years of existence, and then just sort of drop it, only pushing the multi-media aspects of the consoles. Look at the 360 today. There is literally no reason to own it unless you're a fan of generic first person shooters and Gears of War. I personally don't trust Microsoft in giving me a compelling and lasting video-game experience, when right off the bat they're trying to shove TV and Call of Duty down my throat.

edgeofsins4665d ago

@JokesOnYou

e3 is what nearly killed it. The change in policies a week later are what saved it.

sobotz4665d ago

Killed it?? with their almost-15 games announcement and MGS V on their conference?

They already said that E3 2013 is gonna be GAMES, GAMES, and GAMES like everyone wanted from MS, and most of the announced games aren't Kinect games like everyone predicted

Seafort4665d ago

Big deal they have 15 games in first year! What about the 2nd and 3rd year and beyond?

You just watch what happens after the 1st year. MS will reduce the amount of games for the Xbox180 just like they did with Xbox360.

They just can't compete with Sony's worldwide studios. MS never invested into their own studios like Sony has. They'd rather pay for timed exclusivity 3rd party DLC for the short term advantage just to piss the other side off.

Sony had Destiny and Watchdogs at their conference along with quite a few indie titles on stage. You'll never see MS promote indie games like Sony did.

I felt sorry for the gamers of the first Xbox. MS dropped the support for that console like a bad smell. They'll probably do the same with X360 too when Xbox180 is released.

p0tat0stix4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

@Fireseed

Sharing digital licenses with multiple users on the same machine is absolutely the norm.

When I purchase and install a program on my computer, ANYONE can use it. Family, friends, the pizza delivery guy. It has been this way since "installing" was a concept.

I'm not trying to downplay the feature of accessing the digital library from all Xbox One consoles. That is absolutely awesome for some.

What I AM trying to point out is that we're being led to believe this "sharing with friends and family" idea is any sort of perk at all. Like I said at the top, this should be assumed.

JokesOnYou4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

JC Denton, No that's just not true, you sony folks call 360 a shooter box but when they release these smaller budget games and of course Kinect games you same folks paint them with a broad brush as if they don't count some suck but some are actually pretty good, but you kids won't notice because if its not a Naughty Dog game everything else sucks, right?...YES sony has a few superb games like the TLOU which just released but other than that neither console has had huge hitters month after month as sony fans suggest.

So far this year 360 has had some decent exclusives or coming this summer/fall Gears Judgement, Dark, and Deadfall Adventures http://www.gamespot.com/dea... Dark admittedly sucked though(I didn't play but reviews are pretty consistent), lol still there is Project Spark, Max and the Curse of Brotherhood coming out for xbox one and 360 this year, plus there is award winning Arcade titles like MineCraft recently and World of Tanks coming exclusively to xbox 360, along with a lot of old favorites like Double Dragon 2, then Lococycle, all this for 2013 of course with tons of awesome multiplats which lets not forget still play on the console too, also don't forget that some of the xbox one games like Titanfall and others early next year will be getting ports to 360 as well.

I'd definitely say ps3/TLOU is the single best exclusive vs 360 for 2013 but to act as if there isn't plenty good games to play on the 360 or that micro is dropping support for the console is BS.

At any rate this was about X1 and regardless of what you think I believe these hit seeking headlines about the X1 are just overblown fanboy grabbing headlines trying to change a negative into a positive.

p0tat0stix, you say that like the digital policies you are referring to even exist. What I keep trying to explain to people is that we have to keep our eye on the digital distribution. If we don't get at least one of these companies to give us a policy that allows ownership of all digital purchases, we are going to end up with physical shops going out of business anyway, and our only options would be to buy digital or give up gaming. I would be nice to know that when that happens, I still can have ownership of what I paid money for. At this point none to the DD services give you ownership of what you . You are paying buyers price for rentals.

M$ was offering some ownership over your content, but that was drowned out by "DMR" and "always on" petitions.

pompombrum4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

"M$ was offering some ownership over your content, but that was drowned out by "DMR" and "always on" petitions."

And who is at fault there? Microsoft goofed up big time because they were too busy going TV TV TV NFL NFL TV TV TV instead of properly explaining things the first time.

They could have easily extended their unveiling show to have properly gone over the features instead of having five different executives saying five different things.

rainslacker4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

Yeah, see that's the problem though. The benefits weren't even hinted at until a while after the outrage began. Hell even then we had to wait till after E3 for most of it. Then when they were spoken of, they did a horrible job explaining it.

Take game sharing with 10 friends. They mentioned it, but at no point really described it. To this day, any information on it is strictly assumptions based on what people wanted it to be. No facts. So how can we say it was anything at all? Maybe they just made it up as a reason to try and get people on board. I believe at one point they said they hadn't even ironed out final details. That's just plain ridiculous if they want to use it to sell DD.

Not saying that's the case, but MS really dropped the ball on almost everything. I would say the only thing they actually did right was deliver a hell of an E3 show, but after that was over it was straight back to vague quotes, misdirection, or outright ignoring of the subject.

MS clearly saw the benefits of all digital, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered to make physical media a DD format. I just think they thought people would buy into it because of the Xbox brand, and expected only a vocal minority to really speak out against it. When reality set it, they've done nothing but backpedal, and the past week or so managed to finally start doing some positive things. But the problem with that is that everything they're doing seems reactionary, and not visionary.

andrewsqual4665d ago

That word, where have I head it before? Oh yeah, there is a dedicated Share button on the PS4 controller and Sony have been saying Share since GDC 2007 when they unveiled LittleBigPlanet. Also at their PS4 console reveal they talked about this "console" feature like you should do at a console reveal.

JunioRS1014664d ago

Whether it's a right or not, people shouldn't be so afraid of the whole "always online" thing.

DRM is terrible, right?

Well, on Steam, it hasn't been terrible, it's been a blessing.

Getting Max Payne 3 last month for $5????

You pay so much less money for games with DRM in place.

You pay less money, AND there are better sales, more often.

That is a nice feature. Being able to access your games from any X1 is a great addition.

ABizzel14665d ago

It's a great feature, but I want to know how many people you can share with. Is it limited or can you share with any profile on your console and vice versa.

If so expect this to not last long or have a limit of 2 - 5 "share friends". Sony did the same thing with the PS3 and so many people were sharing "myself included (mainly as the source of games)" that they had no choice, but to limit the feature to 2. It's a great idea, but it's bad for business.

p0tat0stix4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

@ABizzel1

This is why I tried to point out the difference between sharing and lending. Gamers get confused/misled.

Xbox Live Gold members will be able to log on to ANY Xbox One console and access all their digital games. Great feature, truly. But as soon as you log off, POOF. Gone. (unless they are "family")

So don't confuse this with any sort of lending ideas you might have. I think MS is looking into the lending idea, but I don't know that anything official has been put out.

ABizzel14665d ago

@p0ta

I know I just read it on their site. It's nothing but a glorified version of what gamers have been doing all this generation. Except now your you don't have to use the same gamertag.

darthv724665d ago

Sharing was always possible on the 360. you could buy a game on live and any other profile on that same system was able to play the full game as well. That is the example of the license being tied to the system.

The example of the license being tied to the gamer is if i went to a friends house, recovered my gamertag, downloaded a game that i had previously dl to my own system and we (my friend and i) could play the full game.

When i sign out of my profile on his system....the game would revert back to a demo (or not play in regards to games on demand types).

With xb1 they are extending the sharing we have now but adding more emphasis to it. Like with being able to have a single gold account work as the proxy for other profiles on the same system. That part i like and i know my son will as well.

JokesOnYou4665d ago (Edited 4665d ago )

This is awesome but I'm still hoping for some extra surpises for those of us going digital, like pre-downloading new releases the day prior so its unlocked and ready to play on launch day.

hankmoody4665d ago

This is great news, especially for those with multiple Gold account households. Now I just have to worry about paying for my own and the rest of the fam will still be covered.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio19d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay21d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn221d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn220d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown21d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay21d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay21d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac20d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger21d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300021d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde21d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde20d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_20d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
