Agreed. No (native) C dev tools and not supporting Google Play - with being underspeced is killing the Ouya.

However, Amazon is a multi B$ company. They already have a HW platform and one of the largest (the largest?) online store. Their Kindle app store rivals Google Play.

All they really need to do is sell a premium Kindle (A15/Tegra4 or so based) and sell it as a "Kindle Play" and add a controller which will work out of the box - forcing devs who want store certification to support the controller.

Voila. Kindle Console.

Not say this will happen, though. But would be fairly easy for them to do.

"weaker hardware" is entirely subjective. Are you saying you cannot put Android on better hardware?

MS joined the race late, after PS1, and turned out to be fine. The wii showed that you can have crap hardware and destroy the competition. Not saying it's likely for a new console to do it, but it is still possible.

The fact that android runs on java is a whole separate debating topic though.

Java is irrelevant. Most games for Android are written in C++. All Java really does is providing the Android interface and store integration. That's about it. Rest is the same code as e.g. consoles. Most middleware is available for Android.
