I'm assuming you mean gaming laptops, or else you're just being stupid. Plus gaming laptops from a year ago had a 7970m or a 680m. Some really high end ones had sli or crossfire x. The ps4 is a more powerful system that the ones with the single 7970m or the 680m. Yes, the 7970m has higher TFLOPs than the PS4 gpu, but the ps4 gpu is part of an APU, so a higher performance output can be achieved.

You guys are putting way too much hype into the GPU. The GPU is half of the CPU/GPU combo chip. The CPU in the XboxOne and PS4 are budget processors designed for tablets/mobile devices. A gaming laptop from last year not only has a high end GPU, but a quad or six core i7 CPU that is much, much more powerful. Bad comparison if you want the console to "win". Yes, you pay more for the laptop, but it can do much more than play games.

Who cares? If price were all that mattered we would all be buying the Wii U and gaming on that.

It's a stupid argument. You generally pay more to get more. A good gaming PC will cost you more up front, but it gives you WAY more, both in terms of the quality of graphics and performance in games as well as the myriad non-gaming capabilities a PC offers.

Then you also have to consider that games are cheaper on PC and you don't have to pay to play online.

you're missing the point in the "price" argument...the reason price is brought up is because any time there is an article about the power of the PS4 (or Xbone for that matter)...PC nuts come running into the comments section with their hair on fire talking about how some GPU from last you lays absolute waste to the PS4 but costs $600 all on its own while the PS4 is a complete system that will sell for $400...

you CANNOT at this time build a complete box that matches the specs of the PS4 for $400...you simply cannot...

im not saying that is a BAD thing...im not saying that as a slight against the PC gaming crowd...its just true...

however for a few hundred more you will probably be able to easily beat the PS4...and with $1000 you would be able to build a PC that is certainly MUCH more powerful than a PS4...

I think you missed the part when starchild said, "you generally pay more to get more..." Despite the PS4 offering a lot for a little, it still cannot compare with what a PC can offer, and it isn't about what a PC at the same price point can offer - that argument is just console fans trying to move the goal posts.

using cars an an example, the PS4 (or any console) is like a sporty, fuel efficient car, with lots of features, a good top speed, and all for a descent pricetag. A gaming PC is like a Ferrari - Comparing pricetags is pointless. PC's cost more, sometimes a lot more, but you get more, not just in performance, but in features and versatility.

Of course, people comment when they want to set the record straight. Nothing wrong with wanting a ps4, ill get one myself. But its the way people want to proclaim the ps4 some superior machine to computers is just absurd. Wether you like it or not, your working with old hardware in the ps4. Very old hardware. PC users have had that stuff in their machines already for years. My laptop from6-7 years ago dominated the ps3 at the time playing the original crysis.. only $700 laptop. My desktop of 2 years ago blows away the ps4 lol.. I mean dominates it.

@Kurylo3d No one here but PC fanboys trying to act all superior mentioned PC. No one said the PS4's GPU was better than anything you can get on PC. That didn't and doesn't usually happen it's all in your imagination. Also at Starchild if they were saying that Wii U cannot match it's performance they'd be right it can't. It's running several years old tech that was out of date for a new gaming console probiably by 2010 at least. If they point out that the Xbox one has a slightly less powerful GPU they'd be right-although why they'd bother as it's unlikely to have much/any effect on most games. Also there's a difference between this and say an xbox exec who doesn't actually make games etc he just does sales and PR etc telling people as an example that 3 xbox ones will be available in the cloud and it'll improve graphics etc which is total crap then yeah I can see why people would call them out or when they directly attack another console in the argumnt by mentioning it by name or heavily implying stuff I can't say I blame people for wanting to set that straight.

Its not about setting the record straight...nobody is claiming that the PS4 is more powerful than gaming rigs...its only PC fanboys that feel the need to come here yapping about hardware...

you also claim that the PS4 is using "old" hardware...which is funny considering that NONE of the hardware on the PS4 is available for purchase on the market...

jaguar cores are new to the scene and you're certainly not going to find an 8core jaguar CPU listed on Newegg right now, the GPU is not an off the shelf model...

its not cutting edge, but its certainly not OLD by any means...and that goes for the Xbone as well...

btw...as for the PS3 vs your laptop...youre lying...everyone knows that both of the current gen consoles were more advanced than almost allPC hardware at the time...especially a $700 laptop in 2006...

That seems like an arbitrary and artificial limit on the discussion.

The fact is, the PC is a device that can play games and the PS4 is a device that can play games. There is plenty of reason to weigh and consider the advantages and disadvantages of each platform.

Rubbing PS4 specs in the faces of Xbox gamers makes no more sense than PC fans rubbing specs in the face of console fans. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, as they say.

Honestly, your attempt at pushing the PC from the discussion seems like an excuse to pretend it doesn't exist so that you can continue bashing the XB1 without the larger context that these consoles exist in.

Now I believe the GPU is a HD7850! I got two HD7970's and two 660ti's so the HD7850 is like Mid Range to me but it is a very good GPU. AMD did a GREAT job on the HD7000 series.

In a vacuum, it's close to a 7850. However, they are not used in a vacuum, they are used in different PC and console environments. A GPU will get considerably stronger hardware utilization in a more specialized architecture in a console. You're not going to see some pretty amazing looking games from what might seem like a modest GPU were it in a PC, such as the latest edition Killzone and inFamous, as a result. Without the burden of Windows and numerous general purpose functionality, there is quite a bit more efficiency regarding what you can do with it.

BTW, I have 2 EVGA GTX 670 4GB cards.

I wish they would speed up their gpu to 850mhz to though. And also up the cpu to 2ghz, and if the other 2 CU's are physically there but disabled, then I want them enabled. Cuz all that extra power will come in handy in the later years.

PS4 is more than twice as powerful as a pc with the same specs (several developers including John Carmack have said so).

I suppose thats what you get from playing games on a machine that evolved from a word processor, a compromised experience.

@GrownUpGamer: How is DayZ "associating" PC gamers with PS4 gamers when the article is literally about PC gamers and PS4 gamers being able to play the same game together? Do you even know what cross-play is?

On Topic: What I find interesting is that Warframe is allowing for cross-play but Planetside 2 isn't. The reason behind Planetside 2 is that it's because of the fact that patches require certification from Sony and keeping the PS4 version up with the PC version, patch wise, is impossible because of that.

This is made even more interesting by the fact that Planetside 2 is developed and published BY Sony Online Entertainment, essentially making it first party, and Warframe is developed by Digital Extremes but published by SCE.

So a first party MMOFPS won't be cross-play because of certification problems but a third party, free-to-play, third person co-op shooter IS going to be cross-play? Wtf? How did the Warframe devs get around their own patch issues?

Not everyone on PC is an elite gamer. Noobs play on PC also. Just because someone is using mouse and keyboard doesn't mean a damn thing, because skills and quick reactions and good aiming are still needed. You make it seem like just having a mouse and keyboard are all thats needed to be good. Why not let people play how they want? DualShock 3 also works on PC people.

I played this last week on my PC, and to be honest..its a pretty boring game. I uninstalled it thaen dicked around on N4g while waiting for planetside2 to download.

Of course this is just my opinion, having had a little experience with the game. It looks pretty thanks to my Asus-Nvidia 560Ti-OC, though.

I am a console gamer at heart, but I have the means so I do play the odd- visually jaw dropping game on my PC (hawken being my current fave).

But I just think its crazy when people think the PS4 is going to do something with graphics that has not already been seen on PC.

I also have the means and have been gaming on PC (steam) for the last 5 or so years. I am a console gamer 1st. I don't get why the excitement of the console NextGen graphical upgrade that has so many pc gamers in an uproar.
Most articles professing how powerful the PS4 basically compares it to today's PC gaming? At a great price no less (considering I put at least 1500 into my gaming pc) So why all the butt hurt from PC only gamers?

It does seem like a strangely generalised thing to say coming from a PC dev that would be used to even mid range graphics cards being considerably more powerful. I guess in the context of a console it is the most powerful GPU ever used in a console and many times the potency of what we have in the current gen, and in the fixed platform there must be a massive amount of performance available.

This is definitely great news. I was a little disappointed during our last chat when you mentioned that during their last live stream they were considering a one-time only account transfer. So I'm really glad they were able to resolve this. I know I'm going to want to play with both groups on PC and PS4. Plus, I now have almost all the available Warframes built, most of them maxed out, and I really wouldn't want to have to go through all that again.

By the way, I sent you friend request on both Warframe and Steam (at least I'm pretty sure it was your Steam account).

Sorry that isnt correct. I bought a pretty good gaming laptop in 2005 im in the armed forces so thought it would be good for travelling. It was and i was playing games like Ghost recon on full setting and loving it. Around 2 years later it started to strugle so i started reducing settings, but when it got to a point where i was reducing settings that much that games looked better on my ps3 i reallised what a huge waste of money it was. After that I travelled with a psp and ds not nearly as powerful but miles more fun, less hassle and a lot cheaper.

Guys please... You can't just compare that stuff like this. Wall of text inc.

1. issue: Gaming laptops are bullshit. They are optimized to use as little power as possible, they usually have special (mobile) graphics chips which are way slower than regular desktop cards. You can't compare a mobile device with a home console or desktop PC, different philosophy.

2. issue: Optimization and ports. a PC example first: Crysis came out in 2007. NO way could the xbox360 or ps3 play that game with similar settings, while gaming PCs in 2007 already ran the game in 1080p with higher settings than the xbox360 version.
-->Crysis was one of the last games written for PC and the best example on how the consoles held graphics and especially the size of the worlds back in the last few years. Crysis looked about as good as crysis 3, but it had way bigger levels (utilizing the bigger ram of the PC) it was almost open world-ish, awesome physics, great AI.
(sidenote: Another good example would be the first Halo. What Bungie had in mind was something like what they are doing now with Destiny! And it would have been possible on PC, but they had to cut and dumb it down for the xbox).

So why run some games really bad on PC? Because after ~2008 ALL the games got developed for ps3/360 and then ported to the PC. In most cases ported very poorly. That takes away alot of power because the code wasnt designed for that system. Best example would be GTA IV imho. Took them about a year to make it playable on PC... Not because PCs had not enough power on the contrary, but because the devs had problems with the optimization.

Long story short: A PS3 optimized game (TLOU for example) will not run as smooth on PC because it is written in a different language and the PC has to translate (figurativly speaking). Of course devs could optimize so any PS3 game would run perfectly 1080p/60fps even on current low cost PCs but that takes alot of effort. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

3. PS4/XB1/PC are all x86. Finally all systems (except the WiiU) use the same architecture! Making a PS4 game run on PC will not require anywhere near the amount of effort it took to make a PS3 game run on PC. Because PS4/XB1 use PC architecture. We have a totally different situation now and the new consoles have totally different hardware concepts behind them compared to last gen (look for the Mark Cerny talk on PS4 hardware dev).
-->So if you think about that and take that into consideration, you can't compare the PS3/Xbox360/PC situation with the PS4/XB1/PC situation. It's very different.

--> So... With enough effort you can make almost any game run on any system (Doom on SNES anyone?), and I have to agree with the Microsoft guy: The hardware is not all that important. Do not buy a console because of its "superior" hardware. It's just not worth it. Buy it because of the games and the controller and the gamepad with a second screen, the online platform and and and. Anything BUT the hardware.

Btw I'm just a gamer. I have a N64, a PS2, a PC and a WiiU. Sometimes i borrow a PS3 for games like TLOU.

Great to hear. Also noted the Backlight Retribution developers who said their current builds looked even better than their PC version. At least we have next gen hardware that developers like.

Let PC gamers complain, let console gamers complain but if the developers are happy then we all benefit. I see many great titles getting more love on the PC because of the ease of development of PS4 and its PC architecture.

I realize your trying to stick to the facts, but you really did skip over some. Such as MS hasn't officially announced specs yet. Also they are using a somewhat unconventional method with their console using 32 esram.

So I'd say the jury is still out on that matter. Either way, gaming is going get some much needed improvements real soon. : )

Xbox One GPU is only about 60-70% as capable as the PS4 GPU even after the 6% clock bump, so saying that PS4 GPU is only "a bit better" is being very kind to Microsoft.

Also, the ESRAM is there to boost the lacklustre DDR3.

No I'm typing this from my POS year old Galaxy S3..and actually now more then ever is it the time when everyone is moving AWAY from the PC...

smartphones/phablets/tablets are the future of every day computing...I rarely ever use my desktop anymore (and its a Mac not a PC loli use my MacBook much more than I use the desktop...

I personally love having a desktop...would rather have a powerful desktop/laptop to a tablet...but as time goes on I find myself using my iPad/smartphone for more and more of my daily computing needs...

I love your comment about the only difference between a "normal" PC and a "gaming" PC is a GPU...lol...

I guess there is no reason for us to upgrade RAM/CPU/Mobo/PSU/HDD/etc ever again?...just keep slapping a new GPU in there and let the rest of the rig bottleneck you to death...sounds like a smart way to waste $$ and have an unoptimized experience to me!...brilliant...

THAN not then, i don't know about anyone else but i am getting annoyed at people using that word wrong so often.

and if you played a PC game on a low end graphics card, and then a mid/high end one you would see why fps are so important.

Play any first person shooter with the frame rate locked at 30 and then at 60 (provided you have at least a mid-end card)

i game at 1080p even if i have a really good graphics card simply because frame rate is everything. Plus now that the consoles will be better optimized for multi core hopefully that means us PC gamers get the benefit we should have had ages ago, proper multithreaded games that take advantage of the cpu cores. No more low fps bullshit like we get with good graphics cards on some games.

What you said doesn't even make sense either, if you care about games only i guess you don't care if a game you like runs like absolute shit?.. yeah, i'm sure you don't.

My 2009 PC card 5870 is very close to a PS4 performance, and my laptops 5870 isn't far behind either.. i personally don't find any excitement in PS4 other than some exclusives, for the rest PC is best for performance. I'll continue using Steam for cheaper games and free online play.

consoles and pcs dont work the same way, a pc with the same specs as the ps4 cannot do what the ps4 can with the games, this is a fact, pcs DO NOT use there full hardware and power to do gaming, consoles do, so ps4>pc with similar specs, pc gaming cant even keep its exclusive ips, the ps4 and even current gen consoles are getting them, fps and graphics mean shit next to gameplay or storylines, anyways most pc exclusives dont ever take advantage of the high end hardware, its mostly the mulitplats that do.

Nice of you to know what PC gamers are into eventhough odds are they play older games then you and not only that you are ignorant to PC gaming. On my PC I am currently playing FF7 and that game has crappy ass character models (I think the art backgrounds are really nice at times). One of the beauties of PC gaming is that it is backwards compatible, but it can emulate any console game (even run them better) except Xbox 360 and PS3 games.

You consoles fanboys are just as bad and articles posted like this everydady prove it, especially how most of you are excied for HD rereleases and crave a remake of classic titles, because they have bad graphics

emulation is irrelevant as I can buy old games on the consoles now, and emulation is basically piracy, so you basically expose the rampant piracy and torrenting of games on the pc, bye supporting emulation and not paying for games,piracy is another big issue with the pc, alot of pc gamers torrent and pirate games on there, and ff7 is awesome, graphics dont matter at all really, I actually love the old games like ff7, and snes and genesis and n64 and ps1 games, gameplay and story mechanics are far more important then some fps and graphics.

The emulation argument over legacy games good one there bud considering that has no negative effect on the experience with a PC gamer, hell not even the devs who developed it 10+ years ago. Also, it is not like we all can shop on Ebay the main place to really get anything for legacy consoles, for example I will not ever use paypal because it is a pain to get it all setup and far from worth the hassle IMO and other just flat out dont trust it which is the only way to purchase anything on ebay
The fact is piracy of these old games is hardly a threat if any when it comes to legacy consoles because have you ever really seen a dev/publisher overreact over it because usually they jump all over piracy for lowering sales and I am sure they would be talking about this negative effect of legacy emulation quite often.
The fact remains that on PC you have the ability to emulate any console except the PS3 and Xbox 360, therefore a PC gamer has access to any game they want and if they do not feel right pirating they can always buy a copy of the game, for example wii emulation can be done with a copy of a game as long as you ahve the right disc drive.
The fact remains that PC gaming gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, and as a gamer that is a positive

No but people who use this argument fail to realise that brand new games on release are always cheaper than the console version, plus now that you have to pay for online on PS4 makes PC even better.

For about £600 you can build a pretty nice base computer, it will be much better than PS4 for these reasons: free online, cheaper games, usually better performance than PS4 (depending on game & graphics card)

But yea if you want a simple plug and go system, then thats why people like consoles.. i prefer the much better freedom of PC personally since it can do a ton more than gaming. Any decent mid/high end rig will put out better fps than a console as long as the game is well optimised.

Absolutely agree. I think its not just the "plug and go system" though, PCs nowadays are almost as plug and go as consoles... Buy on steam, wait for patches to install, click start - off you go.
I think a big reason is the branding. People love to have a branded product that they can identify with and defend on the internet... Its kinda stupid but thats the way humans are :)

Those console gamers put us PC gamers all in the same pot, but they fail to see that we PC gamers like to kill each other in the sleep because I have AMD and you have nVidia ;D

No, but thats because the PC has a lot more software interfaces that the code has to run trough.
This is causes by the fact that theres so many different pc configurations.

WIthout the software interfaces, gaming would be near impossible on pc;s.
Flipside of software interfaces is that they add overhead, which costs power.

Thats why consoles exist.

Why does it matter if there are a lot of PC users commenting? The reality is it doesn't matter if the PS4 is more powerful or not. The PS4 is stuck with what it has while PC hardware advances. Same goes for XBO... Also, I think this new console cycle will be even longer than this past time.

I think the console life will be much shorter than the last gen. My opinion is based on, consoles going with mid-ranged hardware and not cutting edge at release like the last time.

Something lots of people forget about is the software. Ps4 will preform better then pc's Based on the software alone. Face it Windows anything isnt made for gaming. Developers will take full use of the Hardware all thanks to gaming OS's.

An Nvidia Hardware engineer (so a rival to PS4s
AMD GPU) praised the PS4 architecture. He said
that in some situations you can achieve the same
results as a PC GPU with only 10% of the power.
In these scenarios, you simply cannot look at the
numbers on the box. I'm more inclined to agree
with world leaders in their fields rather than
forum members. Look at God of War 3 on the PS3
and tell me that 8 year old PC hardware with only
256mb RAM could achieve those results.

If specifically designed for one pc configuration, then yes it can be easily done, as an 8 year old high end pc is stronger then a ps3.

However, since nobody builds pc games for one specific pc configuration (game would not have enough consumers then), you obviously wont see this happening, and thus games are build to run on software interfaces instead, so all pc gamers can enjoy them.

This costs overhead and indeed makes it very difficult for GOW3 to run on all 8 year old pc's with those specs.

8800 gtx came out 8 years ago, the same time ps3 did, it DESTROYED PS3 and to this day it destroys ps3

it can run games in 1080p that ps3 cannot even run in native 720p

the whole "bu bu but because its on console it will get optimized 10x more" is absolute garbage

if console games get so well optimized why can an 8800 gtx from 2006 run skyrim 10x better than the ps3

why does a game like alan wake on the 360 need to be reduced to 540p just to get it to run

consoles are basically pc's with cheap hardware, devs can squeeze an extra 10% out of them TOPS, and when you are as far behind the curve as ps4 and xbox1 are, 10% ain't gonna mean shit!

I mean it's competent, wouldn't call it a beast. At least not when compared to what's on the market. But to be fair for what it's costing Sony it's probably quite powerful.

Is there any info about the Xbone doing cross-platform gaming? If not it would be sweet to see more games that cross-platform with PC and PS4. If Microsoft can't make Cross-platform work with the Xbox One (Same company, I don't see why not), ohhh boy would that bring a whole new level of poo slinging, considering the PS4 seems to be able to achieve this level of technological territory.

I don't doubt the fact that hardware of the PS4 beastly pice of machinery, and all the PC fanboys don't start raving on about how much better PC is.
I know PC hardware is better than the PS4's hardware but the differance is that the PS4 is a console so you CANNOT compare a console to a PC period.
I'm getting tired of all these PC fanboy trolls they are everywhere.

And now that that's of the way, I think that the PS4 is going to be a great console both in hardware and software, and I'm not afraid of the rumors about how much RAM it uses for the OS I'm pretty sure that a substantial amount of that RAM can and will be released from the OS after maybe a few years.

Can't wait until GamesCom they have to give us a release date for the PS4 on the 20th aug, I just hope I hear the month October! :-) got it pre-ordered with launchday guarantee and it'a already paid for YAY! :-)

Fact is I rather have a PS4 than any PC as of now.

I've been playing on PC since wolfenstein 3D & got tired of
the never ending race of upgrades to make games work properly.
With time you even had to check updates on every goddamn
driver you had if your game didn't work.
I grew tired of throwing lots of money into a box where no one actually
used the potential of it. Everything was about high fps and screen resolution.
It's kinda funny when you see people comparing fps in a shooter - "I have 120 fps with my new 300$ gfx card, wow I only had 103 before! This must be good, eh?"

It is strange but when I think about it I can't remember any really
awesome exclusive games on PC since Half-Life 2?

I switched to console for my gaming entertainment and
nowadays I mainly use my former gaming PC for paying them bills.

I prefer exclusively developed games were devs optimise code.
Im all about the code - not the parts containing it.

Any "PC-elitist" who recognise themselves in this scenario?

No I have never had trouble with upgrading hardware I got a 9800gt when it first game out it runs bf3 on high to this day

So the PS4 i think is the greatest Console out there and i think it`s time to get one. I started as an consolero with a atari 2600 and ended with the ps1.
Even when i get the ps4 now i will always be a pc gamer. The PC gives me more. It's a better graphic experience and i can do all my work with it.
