Is EarthBound A System Seller?

The majority of gamers - even Nintendo fans - are still awaiting that must-have release before picking up a Wii U. However, with the much-anticipated EarthBound being exclusive to the Virtual Console on Nintendo's latest home console, could this old JRPG become a Wii U system seller?

Maybe a little one. It might get a few niche earthbound fanatics to finally get one just to support the sale of the title... but will it be enough to turn everything around for wii U? No, In the end there is one game that is going to turn everything around... an HD mario Kart.

It looks nice, but a small game like that probably wont sell a £300 console... or whatever price it is now.

Most realistic answer would be no. I hate to break it to you but most people buy a Wii U to play Wii U games. Same goes for any new system, they don't buy it to play old games.

Not saying you shouldn't buy Earthbound, its a great game but to sell the system is a little out there. I mean you really don't need a Wii U to play Earthbound either.

The only game right now that has a chance currently is Pikmin 3. Seeing as how the PS Vita has had some really great selling games lately soul sacrifice, senra, toukiden and even that really hasn't helped the hardware sales too much.

I honestly don't see Pikmin really selling that many more Wii U's either. It will probably get a big jump for a little while just like the Vita and go back down again.

For most people there is no system selling game... it takes like 5-10 games coming out soon to warrant an investment like that. For me personally, earthbound is a considerable plus though.

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

Earthbound Creator Says Nintendo Considered Mother 3 Translation, But It Was Complicated

IGN writes: Mother 3 is one of the most hotly-desired RPGs ever, having never received an official translation in North America despite the cult popularity of its predecessor, Earthbound. But over all these years, series creator Shigesato Itoi has never weighed in on the discussion - at least until now."

They should remake Earthbound, and bring it to modern platforms.

A translated version of this game on Switch Online would be nice, and it would add a lot value to the Expansion Pak service.

Bring it already. Nintendo is frustrating at times

I would love to see an Earthbound game just redone with 3D-ish models and characters. Just having a remaster for Switch Online would be awesome!

Did you ever see the Earthbound 64 concept/materials? That actually looked really good, but I'd also take a HD-2D remake as well.

FinalFantasyFanatic899d ago

Nintendo seems very whimsical about what they give they're fans, sometimes they'll give them a bone (e.g. Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door for the Switch), and other times, they just give them little to nothing (agh, the Zelda anniversary).

When you consider the cost of gaming back then and even now, no excuses when costs are involved.
