PS4 vs XBox One - What's the Difference, Really?

TGR take a look at both next gen offerings and ask the question: is there really all that much between them?

They forgot to mention the most important factor that many people seem fine to disregard. At less a few people from a certain group.

And that factor is of course past history.

If I was getting an X1, sure I'd have great fun initially with the launch line up, but after that I'd be very worried is MS was going to keep satisfying my core gaming needs. It's honestly extremely embarrassing how little MS has supported the 360 in the last few years.

People like to keep reminding me MS is investing 1 bil in games, to which I reply, how many years are you planning to keep your console?

I have this crazy, wild idea that when I buy a console that it will be supported for the whole generation. I know that's a little of a mind f*ck for some people, but that's what I believe. I find it very sad that other people have much lower standards.

Sony has gone above and beyond in regards to releasing quality exclusives and new IPs right through out the whole generation and I don't have a single fear with getting a PS4 to whether the games are going to keep getting released.

So I'll be going with the company that's for the gamers and has a genuine passion for the games industry.

NewMonday4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

"What's the Difference, Really?"

* the PS4 is much more powerful, GPU has 100% better fill rates, 100% faster RAM and 60% more FLOPs, no OS layer for programming doubles the spec potential even more.

* will get much more games because of the large number of quality 1st party studios, Japanese developer preference(for example PS3 games like Yakuza, Disgaea, NiNuKuni and Xillia are 3rd party) and publishing policy is still the best for Indy devs.

* better design

* $100 cheaper

@jessupj
"People like to keep reminding me MS is investing 1 bil in games"

with few 1st party studios that is hard to believe, 1b is the cost of the servers and that's it.

EasilyTheBest4679d ago

I look at it from a different perspective.

What can the PS4 do that the X1 can't?

What can the X1 do that the PS4 can't?

Kinect and HDMI Input gives the X1 a ton of advantages in my opinion.
If Microsoft could TV advertise these advantages the X1 could do really well.

I know there's only a small percentage of ppl on this site who will agree but its just my opinion remember.

I really think the videogame landscape has changed and you can't just have a console with just better graphics. Tablets and phones are advancing way to quickly, a quarter of the way through PS4 & X1s life tablets etc will probably be better graphically.

pacostacos4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

@newmonday MS specified that the 1 billion is for the creation of Xbox one games the servers are seperate they already own a ton and are building more.
Furthermore, Ms has 23 game studios more than sony. Ms has big pockets and they're putting alot of money behind the xbox brand and games with 15 exclusive games (8 being new ip's) coming from Microsoft Studios specifically in the first year on top of third party exclusives like Ryse, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, DR3, Quantum Break.

Cant wait for the One!

NewMonday4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

@EasilyTheBest

PS4 is also using a full fledged OS this time around with a long history of development and shares origins with MAC OS, FreeBSD is also optimized for networking

At E3 Sony announced PS4 support for almost all popular media streaming services, and will surly have the popular social apps, Facebook goes as far as being integrated into the PSN friends network.

another big advantage for the PS4 is Gaikai but since it's not available at launch it's not fair to tout it just yet.

@pacostacos
MS comments about it in an ambiguous way like usual, games are about show not tell.

mcstorm4679d ago

TBH the WiiU, Xbox One and PS4 all have + and - points and it just depends on what you want on which one will fit your needs the best.

For me the beginning of this new gen is all about the WiiU and Xbox one for me.

My reasons are I want to play DK, Pikmin, Mario 3D, Sonic, Zelda Wind HD, Mario Kart and more on the WiiU

The Xbox One I want to play Ryse, Forza 5 and KI but I will also be using it for Xbox music through my sound system as well as linking with my Sky box.

I will be getting a PS4 at some point to but im more excited about the games above than any on the PS4 at the moment.

Like I said its each to there own but for me the PS4 gives less value than the WiiU and One at the moment but that is not to say it is a bad console or that it will fail as there will be other people out there who will want a PS4 over a WiiU and Xbox one just like there will be people who want a WiiU over the One and PS4.

At the end of the day MS Sony and Nintendo all bring something amazing to the table and we should go and buy the device we want and not what people say is the best as we are all different and have there own minds.

NewMonday4679d ago

@mcstorm
can't argue about personal taste, but so far exclusive PS4 games like Killzone:SF is outselling Forza and Ryse combined.

pacostacos4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

and Xbox exclusives Dr3 and Ryse are outselling Knack and Driveclub by ALOT... point?

illtownNJONE4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

compare forza and ryse graphics to any game on ps4......stop saying that ps4 spec bs when all that matters is the outcome of the game ........@mcstorm where is your source for your statement btw sony putting out killzone while COD and BF4 launches is suicide.....

forcefullpower4679d ago

@pacostacos

Let me get this straight your are saying that those two games are out selling one game which is being given away free on day one and brand new platformer. Way to go on the great come back.

BigDan804679d ago

I'm assuming nothing until the games are on the shelf, but if you look at the current PS3 lineup and the current 360 lineup, recent PS3 games are far stronger. Maybe you have a point...

fermcr4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

PS4 vs XBox One practically have the same hardware (with the exception of Kinect). Multi-platform games are going to be essentially the same in both consoles. What's going to be different are the exclusives. Sony simply has better and more 1st party studios then Microsoft, there for, releasing more (and probably better) exclusive games then Microsoft.

Microsoft got a break last (present) gen simply by releasing every year the same franchises (Halo, Gears and Forza), timed exclusive DLC for COD, and had the cheapest console. I don't think releasing just those franchises is going to cut it next gen. They need a bigger (and more diversified) pack of exclusives... I predict that later on Microsoft will have to invest heavily on 3rd party studios with established IP's, to get exclusives to sell their console.

COD and Battlefield crowd will go for the cheapest console were they can play those games, and Microsoft has the most expensive one. They will need exclusives to sell the X1. They need real exclusives and not timed exclusives.

HugoDrax4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Multiplatform titles will essentially look the same visually, but gameplay could always be different on XB1 because developers could take advantage of KINECT 2.0.

Foxgod4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Not much, if you translate it to the way games will eventually look on both platforms.

Problem is that people are measuring the differences in %, which makes it seem like theres a big gap, however to make a difference in computing you need to at least have the double amount of transistors in it.
The specs of x1 and ps4 are eightfold that of current gen, they needed to do that to make enough of a difference.

The difference between the x1 and ps4 are nitpicking at best.

NewMonday4679d ago

5% is nitpicking

50% is no contest

Foxgod4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Again with the % to make it seem like theres a gap.
% are not a good way to measure, count the transistors instead, and realize you need at least twice as much to make a bit of an impact.

On top of that, that 50% comes from the N4G engineers, its by no means valid.
Lets wait for official benchmarks.

illtownNJONE4679d ago

lmao 50%? you dnt understand specs

NewMonday4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

@Foxgod

you joking right? nobody in tech counts transistors.

"On top of that, that 50% comes from the N4G engineers, its by no means valid"

you right because the effective number is actually over 60% more TFLOPs on the PS4 because the XB1 reserves 10% of the GPU for the OS and away from games.

http://kotaku.com/the-five-...

and if you want things to count then here you go:

PS4 GPU SPECS

ROPS: 32 (100% more)
Gpixels/s: 25.6 (100% more)
Shaders: 1152 (50% more)
Memory : 8G on 176GB/s
Performance: 1.84TFLOPS
API: OpenGL, direct coding to the multiplies hardware advantage even further.

Xbox One GPU specs

ROPs: 16
Gpixels/s: 12.8
Shaders: 768
Memory : 8G on 68GB/s, only 32mb on 102 GB/S
Performance: 1.230TFLOPS (only 90% avalible for games)
API: DX only over OS layer

@JBSleek
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

@ma1asiah

OpenGl is only one set of API supported on the PS4 but is not the only option like DX on the XBone.

thrust4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Well dice says battlefield 4 runs better on the Xbox one.

http://www.info-pc.info/201...

Frostbite 3 Supports DirectX 11.1 API – Faster GPU/CPU Performance on PCs and Xbox One

Now this is the interesting bit, DICE confirms that the Frostbite 3 engine supports DirectX 11.1 API as revealed by DSOGaming.
“We use DX11.1, there are some optimizations in it (constant buffer offsets, dynamic buffers as SRVs) that we got in to the the API that improves CPU performance in our rendering when one runs with DX11.1. This will be in BF4.”
This means that PC and Xbox One versions of Battlefield 4 would be more optimized than PlayStation 4. There’s also a hint at AMD’s Next “Never Settle Bundle” featuring Battlefield 4 as a free title which is a good deal for AMD users.

NewMonday4679d ago

they didn't talk about the PS4, and they don't need DX11.1 on the PS4 because they have direct accesses to the GPU and can even get more out of it than threw an OS layer like in the XB1.

JBSleek4679d ago

What?? You could of just said they have OpenGL 4.3 lol.

The other crap you said was nonsense.

ma1asiah4679d ago

The PS4 needs an API just like the X1.

Newmonday you just screwed your own credibility with what you just said.

SONY use OpenGL and the X1 uses DirectX

Oner4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Actually the PS4 also supports DirectX features (and others as well) thus it's more flexible for devs and in general ~

"Sony is building its CPU on what it's calling an extended DirectX 11.1+ feature set, including extra debugging support that is not available on PC platforms. This system will also give developers more direct access to the shader pipeline than they had on the PS3 or through DirectX itself. "This is access you're not used to getting on the PC, and as a result you can do a lot more cool things and have a lot more access to the power of the system,"

Source ~ http://arstechnica.com/gami...

Now IMHO I believe Sony will stick with and support OpenGL specifically but I just wanted to clarify that there are "options".

Imalwaysright4679d ago

No one from Dice said that BF4 runs better on the X1 than the PS4.

AnteCash4679d ago

Oh yes it does , didnt you see BF4 at the E3 running on i7 with 780 gtx card thats 3 times more powerfull than xbone.

thrust4679d ago

Just thought you would like to read it.

Valkyre4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

The difference is that just in 2013 ALONE PS3 had/will have close to 6-7 blockbuster AAA exclusive titles (among others as well, just not as "blockbuster-y", like Dragon's Crown) , whereas 360 is trying to remember what the word "exclusive" actually means.

What does that have to do with PS4 and X1 you ask?

Simple.

Sony has a long history of investing in a family of exclusive studios and has a history of supporting their products amazingly well even after 7 years.

M$ on the other hand writes checks to impress people in the first 2-3 years and then just doesnt give 2 shits about core gamers. That is why former 360 exclusives (bioshock Mass effect a shit ton of JRPGs) eventually came to PS3 as well.

History will repeat itself. If people believe crapcom is going to stay exclusive or that EA is also going to be releasing games exclusively for X1, they are in for a huge disappointment...

SONY is still expanding its exclusive studios, there are so many teams already working on PS4 exclusives that are not even announced yet and you know that they will continue to bring quality exclusives even after 6 years.

If you are a gamer and you cant see the difference in that, then... hell... nothing can help you.

Imalwaysright4679d ago (Edited 4679d ago )

Main differences are their 1st and 2nd party devs, the price and the fact that Sony didn´t try to screw us over.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose26d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE26d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername25d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy26d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde26d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8626d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8626d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.
