Why Do Developers Care About Multiplayer?

"Developers make bad decisions, but they make them because they think their making a good decision. It seems obvious, but we sometimes seem to forget that developers aren’t stupid. Multiplayer may or may not be the future, but it’s certainly the here and now. It’s what’s making money, and it’s only common sense for developers to at least consider it," -- GameDwellers.

Money mostly.

They get to charge for map packs, extra characters, weapons and such, basically all the DLC ends up being a lot more lucrative than most full priced games.

Thatguy-3104699d ago

I agree plus they want to add longevity to their product too. Many don't want the original purchaser to resell it.

cyguration4699d ago

I disagree about longevity.

Jim Sterling made a good point. Why would you add DLC to cheat the game and power-level or unlock everything if you don't want people to trade it in? Also a lot of newer games are made to be conquered quickly with checkpoints every five seconds and eight hour play times.

DLC cheats + short play time + no new game plus + lots of checkpoints = a game I play once and trade in once I'm done.

trafalger4699d ago

to sell you stuff and to keep you as a loyal customer. they hope the longer you stay the less chances you will sell the game.

zerocrossing4699d ago (Edited 4699d ago )

In the good old days (way before DLC) pubs & devs used to keep customers happy by providing them with excellent content they wouldn't want to sell or trade in.

(trafalger)

Debatably, few actually "good games" come out in years even now. The term "Nintendo hard" is a little unfair IMO although understandable, the idea of a game was something that challenged you after all, unlike today where the idea is to sit back and experience a story where death is just an inconvenience not a challenging obstacle. DLC is a good tool to extend a games longevity, but honestly you are just kidding yourself if you think developers are putting it out there solely to make us happy, of course they don't want us to sell or trade n a game, they are too busy milking us for cash.

The good old days had its problems, that's for sure, but at least games worked on release and I never remember feeling cheated because of devs holding content back in order to sell it to me later.

At the end of the day, if you give consumers a genuinely good game then they won't want to sell or trade it in. I still have most of my NES, Playstation and N64 for games that serve to prove just that.

trafalger4699d ago

in the good old days you were lucky to have a few good games come out in a year. now we have dozens of games every month and gamers cycle through them like pez dispensers. in the good old days they used to make games that were called nintendo hard because you would die a lot. that created the illusion the games were long because you had to go back from the start of a level. now games are so easy and you can save any time you want. dlc can be a great tool to extend the life of a game and multiplayer can add endless hours online.

part of the problem is weve become spoiled and now we tend to think the good old days were a lot better when in reality a lot of ways they arent.

cyguration4699d ago

Sorry dude, highly disagree.

Look at the original Baldur's Gate, look at the new Shadowrun Returns, look at Dark Souls... we still enjoy good games we just don't like crap and cash-ins. Nowadays we have a lot of crappy cash-ins.

Publishers have become lazy and forced devs to make bad cash-in games and gamers have grown tired of it.

Yeah old NES games were hard but SNES, PSX and PS2 games were great fun and offered amazing nostalgic moments that were artificial or manufactured like a lot of today's AAA titles.

I still fondly remember the original Metal Gear Solid and the first time when Grey Fox got his arm sliced off and he kept on fighting... that was sick. Good gameplay + good storytelling + decent length = a fun, nostalgic game. We rarely get those nowadays.

trafalger4699d ago

red dead redemption, skyrim, far cry 3. those are also recent games that are much bigger than anything back then. back in the old days they had limited storage on cartridges so they had to reuse a lot of the same assets in the game. it wasnt until the psx that storage finally met the demand of a game developer. i dont miss a lot of the old games and how linear they were, what i miss is the challenge.

one big problem now and why we get multiplayer crammed in is because of costs. its probably cheaper to make mutliplayer than to make a game like red dead redemption. look at gta V and how long that takes to make.

i still think we have a better selection of good games now than we did in the good old days.

oh well, well just have to agree to disagree.

Because as humans we are competitive and i don't want 64 people in my house for a game of Battlefield 3.

What? Gaming party!!!!!!!!

wishingW3L4699d ago

to sell DLC? To motivate people to buy the game when it's old?

mafiahajeri4699d ago (Edited 4699d ago )

Batman arkham origins shouldn't receive the same scrutiny from the SP only lovers. WB games outsourced it to splash damage. If you have no interest in the MP then don't play it. Feels good to see people complaining about MP not being able to complain with the famous " it takes away from the SP experience " excuse.

multiplayer is the future and more and more games are proving that year in and year out.

People under estimate the power of the F2P + micro transactions combo, that is the future.

Ripsta7th4699d ago

Because it adds longetivity to a game, COd wouldnt be the same without MP, same could be said for uncharted 2 , even tho Cod focuses on MP and Uncharted on SP.

Smugglers run
Dead to rights
Worlds scariest police chases
Sure I’m missing a few.

Mannn… worlds scaries police chases… that took me back lol

Ape Escape.
Fun game but, wow, you need a college degree to understand the controls.
A remaster would also save you from having to constantly fight the camera.
Keep the music though. Those drum and bass tracks fit really well and haven't aged. Made me think that more games could work well with drum and bass tracks, but unfortunately it's a somewhat niche genre now.

Max Payne Series
Infamous 1 & 2

The best Batman Arkham game still isn’t on PS5, and that’s a problem

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is almost here, but I can't revisit the best Arkhamverse game on PS5 without sacrificing quality.

Not a fan of Orgins. Blame it on the absence of Conroy & Hamill. Blame it on the lack of atmosphere compared to Asylm. Hell blame it the devs thst dicked over Wii U owners like me that purchased the game only for support be dropped as a thank you to me. It's better than Knight but that's not saying much. I don't care for that entry either.

Rebel_Scum880d ago

tbh buying a game like that for WiiU should’ve been an obvious non-purchase when it existed on better hardware.

Cacabunga880d ago

Origins is amazing..
my favorite Batman is Batman and Robin on mega drive.. an HD REMASTER of that would still look glorious

ZeekQuattro880d ago

I got it launch. Kinda hard to go back. I'm supposed to know they were going to drop support months after the fact. 🤣

Exvalos880d ago

You sound like a salty fanboy, that it didn't come to your precious plastic of choice. It's not the developers fault Nintendo continues making underpowered hardware. It's our fault because we keep buying it. Yes I say (we) I'm part of the problem as well.

ZeekQuattro880d ago

I have a PS3 and a Wii U. How was I a salty fanboy? I bought the game on the system I wanted it for.

Rebel_Scum880d ago

Nah my comment has nothing to do with whether you’d know or not that they’d drop support.

Buying any AAA game of that era for a WiiU you should’ve known you’d be sacrificing graphics and load times.

LucasRuinedChildhood881d ago

It's solid but Origins is definitely not the best Arkham game.

LoveSpuds880d ago

Smacks of hyperbole to me, talk about clutching at straws to create some drama around PS5!!

generic-user-name880d ago

Titles like these are designed to get you to come in, go to their comment section and tell them how they're so wrong so they can boost their numbers.

Phoenix76880d ago

Even though its not the best arkham game in the series, its still an enjoyable game in its own right. What it do really well at though, was the crime investigations scenes. Which imo, were the best of the franchise.

goldwyncq880d ago

I don’t know about best game but it definitely has the best story and boss fights.

boing1880d ago

Never played it and recently I've finally tried it via cloud on psn. It's not the best for sure, but it ain't bad either.
