Do Single Player Focused Games Really Need Multiplayer?

Push Square: "Publishers don’t want you to sell your games, and they’ll do almost anything to stop you. For primarily single player focused releases like God of War: Ascension and Tomb Raider, that means implementing online multiplayer in the hope of extending the title’s lifespan beyond its comparatively slender single player campaign. But with the competitive scene dominated by a select few franchises – Call of Duty, Battlefield, and FIFA to name three juggernauts – is it all just a waste of time, money, and effort?"

For the most part for me, no. Usually, single player tailored games don't normally have good mp experiences as they feel tacked on. If the mp diminishes the game package, then I say don't include a mp portion unless it's up there in terms of quality with the sp experience. Of course, exceptions do exist (uncharted, halo, etc.)

I would love to play Tomb Raider MMO.
Let the Best Tomb Raider Wins.

Aren't you the guy who hates MMORPG games? You kept saying Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon are going to be MMORPGs lol.

I think also it depends on originality too. If it's a third/first person shooter like Tomb Raider or Far Cry 3, then if you're going to just make generic shooter multiplayer that everybody will play it literally once.

Buit if it's something like Assassins Creed , or the last of us multiplayer, it brings something new to the table. If the game has a way to do multiplayer in an original way, then it definitely should, if it's just going to be a game worse versions of what we already know, whats the point.

I actually really respect studios that come out and say early in development "no, we're not doing multiplayer"

You just get a more refined, focused single player package if there's just no multiplayer included.

Mystogan4706d ago

No you don't know how it would feel without a multiplayer mode if there is no multiplayer to begin with.

Assassins Creed doesn't suffer from the multiplayer mode. I enjoyed all AC games except the first one. And i only jumped into the multiplayer once. Never played it again. i Might try it again in AC4. And i Think there should be a special co-op story mode like splinter cell.

The Last of Us. Amazing single player (doesn't get better) and absolutely fantastic multiplayer, can't sing it's praises enough. It didn't need multiplayer to be a great game, but it sure adds a fantastic element to the game.

No. A singleplayer focused game does not need multiplayer. But there are some singleplayer games that are just begging for a co-op mode. Like dark souls,Elder scrolls, pokemon and assassins creed.

And then there are games that should just be single player like Alan Wake,Bioshock,Mirrors Edge or Heavy Rain.

The Last of Us had a pretty decent multiplayer that adapted well from the singleplayer.

But I agree, a lot of singleplayer oriented games should not have multiplayer; Tomb Raider, Bioshock 2, etc.

testsubject4706d ago

Bioshock 2 had a really fun MP,but I agree on Tomb Raider MP,very boring.

Shadonic4706d ago

No it doesn't but it can be a great addition if done right.

MidnytRain4706d ago (Edited 4706d ago )

Ironically, many who would agree with you think that a multiplayer-focused game needs single player.

iamnsuperman4706d ago

Not all the time. A big example of this is Spec ops the line. Fantastic single player but the multiplayer was a bit generic. It also didn't fit in with the story's themes and general feel. It wasn't needed. It can be done correctly (like The Last of Us) but most single player focused stories get tacked on multiplayer.

No they do not, Just look at Bioshock Infinite
