Nvidia Shield Review | IGN

The Verdict:
"By sheer measure of the hardware alone, the Nvidia Shield is a commendable first effort. It's expertly crafted with high-end components and a comfortable, responsive control scheme — albeit with a bulky, uninspired design. The Shield's biggest challenges, however, are content and cost. There are simply too few compelling gameplay experiences on Android to justify a $300 dedicated handheld, and while the PC streaming feature shows promise, it's in dire need of performance and stability enhancements."

I was excited for this, a lot actually, until I saw that google announced its Nexus 7(2) with the snapdragon S4 cheap, which eats up the Tegra 4.

The only thing that really left me interested in the Shield was the fact it already had a controller, and that its SD card support goes up to a "hypothetical" 2TB storage with the new hardware they have in it.

"which eats up the Tegra 4"

Yes, of course, thank you Qualcomm employee.

NioRide4679d ago

Try looking at my older posts.

You will see how much I had defended this device.

MadLad4681d ago

Still purchasing one, myself. As someone who almost never leaves the house with any portable gaming device, this thing is providing me exactly what I want - a means to game at home when I can't, or simply don't want to, be at my desk.
The fact that it gives me a chance to try out some of these android releases that I would never bother with on a phone is just a plus.

MadLad4681d ago

And I get dislikes for saying I am buying one.
N4G.

Next time I'll just replace "Shield" with "Vita". I'll probably be up a bubble or two next time I logged on.

dredgewalker4681d ago (Edited 4681d ago )

Lol, you're supposed to get used to getting disagrees in N4G. Some people just disagree for the heck of it. Heck I'd rather be disagreed with my honest opinion than be agreed with an opinion I don't believe in.

Edit: i just noticed we both have Jesus avatars.

MadLad4681d ago

This is true.
I am most definitely used to it. I still just find it, you know, annoying. Best word for it. I always share my opinion, popular or unpopular. Still holding onto five bubbles, so I must be doing something right.

As for the avatar, I'll let you live. There is still someone floating around here with my exact pic, just in an N4G shirt. HIM I have to destroy.

dredgewalker4681d ago

I think I'll live cause this is a manga version of Jesus and yes there is a manga and an anime for this type of Jesus :P

bumnut4681d ago

Just post a few "PS4 is going to be great" comments and you will soon have more bubbles.

At least you got a disagree for something that has not hapenned yet, I get disagrees for stating facts!

Williamson4681d ago

So this device was supposedly going to "kill the vita" according to all the vita haters.

Letros4681d ago

How can one kill that which has no life?

Williamson4681d ago

So the vita is dead? If that were the case then it wouldnt be selling at all, sure its not doing 3ds numbers but it did place second in japan according to the media create charts. It still sells about 30-40,000 a week worldwide... but if thats something you call "has no life" then whatever.

dredgewalker4681d ago

The shield has great potential, I just don't know if can reach that potential if no decent devs make games for it. To be honest I'm interested but if there are no games to make use of the hardware then it's just gonna be another android device with a built in controller. I may buy one if it hits the bargain bin.

Veteran artist behind Mass Effect, Halo, and Overwatch 2 weighs in on Nvidia DLSS 5

Darryl Linington from Notebookchect.net writes, "The backlash around Nvidia’s AI push and DLSS 5 has opened a broader question in game development. Beyond performance and image quality, veteran artists are now weighing what AI-driven rendering means for authorship and visual control. If a system can add or reinterpret detail after the fact, the issue is no longer just technical. It becomes a question of how much of the final image still belongs to the people who built it."

NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 Frame Gen 5x & 6x Come to RTX 50 Series GPUs + Dynamic Multi Frame Gen

The latest GeForce driver introduces DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation 5x and 6x alongside Dynamic Multi Frame Generation to RTX 50-series GPUs. The former increases the number of interpolated frames to 4 and 5 (between every two rendered frames), further reducing reliance on the CPU.

Big corp bowing down to another big corp is nothing more than helping each other. But try any games it doesn't work

Smellsforfree52d ago

I don't mind frame gen but only use it if I'm already >70fps without it. It is kinda nice but if I see any visual artifacts I will turn it off. Whenever I'm playing games on my 120Hz LG C3 I will almost never use it because frame rates >120fps look really bad. I think spatial super sampling is a far more interesting and beneficial tech than frame gen. Boosting 30fps to 60fps with framegen is just garbage.

SimpleDad52d ago

Tvs were doing this 15 years ago with their telenovela effect... Idk how anyone can play with this on.

There is definitely input lag there and artifacts.

CornholioX52d ago

It's commercial how they show it. Typical any company does that.

Goodguy0152d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Frame gen just has too much latency and visual glitches for me, don't think I can ever use it for most games. I'd compare with it on and off and it's a world of difference in the feel. I need the very least input lag in my gaming. Companies should rely on actual optimization. As for potato hardware, I suppose it could have it's use.

Is the AI Push in AAA Gaming Giving Indie Developers A Golden Ticket?

WTMG's Jordan Hawes: "With the advent of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 tools, and the whole debacle surrounding AI usage in AAA gaming, is this new push an opportunity for smaller studios to showcase they are the ones vouching for artistic integrity in the gaming industry?"

They already are. Indie studios are the only developers that constantly strive to publish innovative and experimental experiences. There has been little to no art in AAA gaming, with just a few exceptions.

Yi-Long63d ago

Indie-studios have been showcasing their creative superiority and bravery over AAA-studios/releases for a while now.

Personally. I have zero interest in AI slop in any of my entertainment, so regardless of what Sony, Ubisoft, MS, EA, etc believe the future is, I'm just not gonna touch any of that stuff.

blacktiger62d ago

Everything you said but for me MS is always the problem.

isarai_lee62d ago

One more thing in a long list of things that already give indie Games an advantage

Miacosa62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

In reality a dev having a simplistic tech statck does not really impact the end user experience. If the game is good and worth playing is what matters. In other words some cooks make care if 2 or 3 eggs were used to make a cake but the person eating it doesn't. And in the case of DLSS 5 the chef is soley responsible for the recipe and how its mixed together.
