wii bashing... Gimmicky motion controls... and 10 year old rehashes with a new cover, gettin 9.5+'s.

I don't mind that the Wii seems to focus itself to casual gamers, mostly because there are also many games that are for not-so-casual gamers. What I do dislike, though, is when developers take a hardcore game and water it down for casual gamers.

I tink the problem with the Wii is that many of the games are just recycled franchises that have been Nintendo staples for decades. Barring a few exceptons I know that if I purchase a Wii (Something I may end up doing anyway.) the number of games I will even want to play will end up being much smaller than that of my other consoles. Furthermore the idea of the Wii being good for parties and get togethers just does not sit well with me since I can invite people over witout having to fork the money over for any console. Besides if I wanted to play Tennis with a friend I think it would be better to actually do that outside away from the tv screen.

For me, owning all three consoles. The Wii is the most untouched console in my room. Simply, I cant keep waving my hands like an idiot for 3-5 hours. Just aint gonna happen. So I'd rather kick back, and play GT5P, or COD4. Or play Gears of War or Forza2.

However, the Wii is best when all the girls come over. One thing, the Wii is definitely made for men who likes entertainment. And no, I'm not talking about the games. I'm talking about my girlfriend's friends which 3 happens to have 36 DD's waving that lovely wiimote around. That my friends, is social gaming. =)

What I hate with the developpers is that they sound like:hu, the wii has less power ? Let's make cheap games! Or when the wii gets a lot of ports (I don't know why, but I wanna play new games!) Games like Prince of persia the two thrones (I know it's not that name but I don't remember the Wii name) I DON'T CARE!. I hate those rip-offs, that's what pisses me off with the wii. I don't own one, but I played the major games it has with my friend's (MP3:corruption, twilight, brawl, galaxy, fire emblem) What i'm truly waiting is an hardcore FPS that uses the wii to its maximum, and yeah it is possible. As I recall, I think the Wii is a BIT more powerful than the Xbox (original) and this gamemachine has a game called halo2, right? Call of duty3 on wii was cool for a release game, MP3 is the reference in fps for wii but there's no multiplayer. We know the wii is capable of hardcore games, if the devs don't know how to use properly the wiimote+nunchuck then use the classic or gamecube controller!

Any educated gamer prefers to play on PS3 or 360 for many reasons. The online services are way superior. There are many more games that can be played online. There are tons of NEW franchises on PS360/PC that appeal to every gaming taste there is, as opposed to old franchises that many dedicated gamers are getting tired off, or the same tastes all around, such as mini-games, non-games, workout-games, children games, and ports of LAST-GEN games we've already played. That doesn't sound appealing, which is why we hate.

PS360/PC appeals to people that care about presentation; after all, I'd hate to see movies still being released in black and white with horrible resolutions and no sound. Hell, who doesn't want to read a nice magazine with fine print quality, a great font instead of a bunch of a horribly handwritten paper filled with grammatical errors all over the place. I would never give an Oscar to a sh1tty Youtube comic home made mini-series just because I had tons of fun watching it. Consider the Wii is the youtube of gaming, where everyone gathers for a bit of fun and a little laugh but regard it as a place for getting a quick laugh, or tiny bit of information. For High Quality entertainment, people look towards other places. So why the hate? Because you're looking in the wrong place pal; you're looking at websites that *care* about a high quality and completely new experience.

All of these leads me to the fact that next-gen consoles are not only new graphicswise, or multimediawise, but also in online experiences, storytelling, storylines, Intellectual property, and different tastes, including plenty to choose for people that want content for mature audiences. Now, it's not that PS360 enthusiasts wanna feel mature, or that we need blood, gore, guts, tits, and sex, it's that we want something that scares the living sh1t out of us, or that makes us feel really strong emotions. We don't just want "fun", we want entertainment. A movie or TV series drama like LOST surely isn't "fun", but I'll be damned if it isn't entertaining.

We're sick and tired of Mario does the dishwashing, the cooking, the take the dog to take a poo outside, etcetera. Hell, we're sick of mario, as fun as he may be. MANY OF US are sick. Metroid can only be so fun for a while. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Soccer, Warioware, Mario Party... I'll be damned if I keep buying into Nintendo's effortless yet successful venture.

That funky controller could have been accompanied by fancy graphics; not on the level of PS3 or 360 or PC, but something at least half as close. But no, Nintendo decided not to spend billions in R&D like Sony and Microsoft did, which makes sense since they didn't lose a dime in the Gamecube era... they merely spent pocket change compared to Sony and Microsoft, realized how irrational and careless consumers can be if they're given a cheap mockup of something apparently new but not so, called it a funky name, gave it a funky controller, called it "new gen", and rickrolled almost every casual into the new product.

Even Zelda, which is the best they have got, needs a complete makeover if it doesn't need to die. Nintendo needs lots of new IP if they want to make back for all the hate they've grown in their former fans like us. Or at least, they need to completely makeover their old franchises. But of course, they won't, because they're in-the-money. And since they won't, we'll hate.

Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Halo, Gears of War, GTA, White Knight, God of War, Ninja Gaiden... I mean seriously, there are tons of things that you will never find on the Nintendo Wii. It already got resident evil, sure... but it's just another port, and/or a rehash of the already existing series into a rail shooting game with obsolete gameplay. RE5 won't come on Wii... and even if it did, it wouldn't look as good as we would like to, and not all of us fell in love with the almost but not quite "fun" controller.

So "Why the hate?", you ask? I ask "Why the love?" in the first place.

Wii is like soulja boy and paris hilton. They got famous for no reason just like wii did so eveyone hates it because little kids love it (just like soulja boy and paris holton)

Heres a few of my OPINIONS
The Wii:
-Is limited in graphical prowess, and while its not the most important part of gaming, it is still important in the age of HD.
-Has extremely limited online because Nintendo was so late to the party on this one. Honestly, which is easier, a friend code that is 16 digits long or a name that means something to the owner? Yes, it has all those channels, but I'd rather be able to easily play against my friends who are at different schools rather than compare weather trends. No voice chat (yet), not enough games with online capabilities,... All of these are problems that Nintendo needs to fix.
-The amount of shovelware on this system is ridiculous. Now, I know Nintendo doesn't make these games, because a veteran company like that would never do that. But, they have yet to regulate the amount of shovel ware games on the system. If I go into a game store, I see part of a wall of games for the Wii, but when I look closer, I feel like the majority are based around mini-games. Mini-games are fun, but in small quantities.
-Lack of multi-platform titles, and the multi-platform games the Wii does get are usually worse because of either graphical limitations or the motion sensing controls make it feel weird.

While the Wii is still by definition a gaming console, there are a lot of things that Nintendo should deal with if it wants the Wii to be considered, for lack of a better word, a "hardcore" (someone help me with this cuz this isnt exactly what I mean and I don't want to offend people) system. But honestly, I don't think Nintendo cares much because they are raking in millions upon millions of dollars on the Wii.

Well, they must be doing something right. Look were Nintendo were last gen and look where they are now. Maybe it's cause they went their own way and concentrated on making a console that only focuses on delivering a new kind of gaming experience. The Wii is not my console of choice, but bashing it for not being "real" or powerful enough or whatever seems retarded.

Ok i'll repost the comment i always make about Wii. (i'll embellish it a bit though)

I used to be opposed to it, even loathed the cheap, plastic machine that was the wii. The stupid motion controls seemed like a gimmick to me and i thought they wouldn't be implemented well.

Then one day I was drinking (yes i have a problem that i'm working on) and I went into Gamestop and flirted with the cute guy working there, even though he's straight I told him he had really nice eyes (completely true). I happened to ask if they had a Wii in stock, and lo and behold! They did! I spent 20 minutes debating with myself and the employees whether or not the Wii was worth it.

I grew up playing Nintendo and was familiar with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and the classics. Part of me wanted to play the latest iterations of the games, while the other part of me said no, the graphics are sh!t and I'm used to HD ps3 and 360 graphics.

I did buy that Wii, damn it! and I enjoy it! :) Call me a Wiitard, however I am having fun with the system. I have Galaxy, Metroid, SSBB, No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki, Paper Mario, and Zelda.

Gamers includes everyone who plays games even if you play them casually. Though Wii is a "gaming" system, it's not for the hardcore gamers.

From who? Surely not the media, because every chance they get to talk about Nintendo, they're constantly riding their sack about how great their sales are and totally ignoring the lackluster lineup when compared to the other 2 consoles.

Bashing amongst gamers, well yes. That's understandable considering what I mentioned above.

I have a dream that people would see Wii for what it is capable of and not what it's not capable of!

I have a dream that one day Wii lovers, Xbox360 lovers, and PS3 lovers can come together and enjoy games of every console! If people would stop bashing any console and begin to appreciate the good games that each console has to offer, we can stop being Wii haters or Xbox haters or PS3 haters, and we can begin to celebrate as gamers all together. If an instant classic comes out for one console, it's not an instant bragging right of owners that console, and it's not the loss of the owners other two. It's an honor for gamers all together. And it doesn't matter whether it's casual gamers or hardcore gamers. We're all just gamers who want to enjoy games.

Why must it be a console "war"? If one day one console maker (say Sony) does win and results in the disappearance of the other two, that doesn't mean that Sony or PS3 owners have won. It means that gamers all around have lost.

The Wii is aimed at younger kids/moms/senior citizens. I couldn't read anymore of the article after the writer said: "I for one, love the fact my fifty year old mother in law genuinely wants to get up and play a game of tennis with me." I'm sorry but when I'm deep into a "game mode", the last thing I wanna think of is my 50 year old mother in law! "). And not to offend any Wii owners here, I don't have one but I've owned every Nintendo home console since the NES, The Wii to me it's like Britney Spears. It's cute at first. Everyone's wants it. Then you take it home and it gets old. Quick! From the responses I've heard from people I know that have it, it just doesn't have the lasting value to put it in the same category as the other current consoles.

i really dislike nintendo wii i love all other nintendo systems but i just can't stand the wii. with all the stupid games the controller i just don't like the whole thing of the wii and especially online.

I've said this for a while. I'm just generally not a fan of the Wii. It is my least favorite of the current generation of consoles. There are a few games that I've had fun playing though. I like Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy but not too much more held my interest.

I've been gaming since the days of NES. The Wii is the different direction in gaming and one that lends itself to a younger audience. I would much rather play some of the "mature" games on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Pretty much stopped loving nintendo after the n64. I really see the wii going down the same path as the gamecube, except with more hype behind it. Really Nintendo has almost forgotten their hardcore gamers. Cmon the wii is really more of a fad and toy, thats not meant to be taken serious, but people still compare it to ps3 and 360, when its nowhere near those two.

Also like the gamecube, everyone is only going to play smash bros. Thats all I remember playing.

I had the Wii for a month and didn't like the game selection; the only real game I played was Mario Lost Levels. Sold the Wii and bought the 360 Elite; so far the Elite has far more playing time than the Wii did.

if u have high speed connection. u can play all classic nes and snes games, tubo graphic 16, activison, genesis,saga. so the Wii still useful. and to prototype same to you!! go buy a classic controller for the Wii and have great fun!!!

Its quite simple really. Sony fanboys hate the fact Nintendo took back the crown. PS2 was a great system.. PS3 is a blunder and now hardly a japanese developer will support their system.

And it never gets turned on. I have two kids that would rather play the 360 and the PS3 than the Wii. At the moment, the level of shovelware out for the Wii is horrible and until that gets any better, I won't spend much money on the system.

We shouldn't bash the Wii for what it is. I wholeheartedly agree you on that sentiment.

BUT we should be allowed to bash the Wii for what it is pretending to be. A current gen console. It isn't, and it isn't even close. It is close to a PSP hardware-wise, but not a 360 or PS3.
Sure, it came out after 2005, and it plugs into a TV, but that doesn't make it next gen.
The Wii-mote is a quality piece of kit, but I've had the Wii since release day and for all the games that I like to play: Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda it doesn't change the experience enough to warrant calling it current gen. I'd rather have had a Next Gen Zelda in an immersive and vibrant virtual world than a gamecube game with Wii-mote controls.
Look at Brawl and Kart. They are going to be the two biggest Wii games this year and they both (supposedly) control better with a gamecube controller. Nintendo have forced those of us who enjoy Nintendo exclusives to buy a new machine with a new control mechanism so we can play their games and then they don't make best use of the controller. Why couldn't they just make a Wii-mote add-on for our gamecubes and save us some money? Another Wii-bashing reason right there.

I think that when people compare the Wii to the 360 and PS3, and then go on to talk about how much more it is selling than the two powerful consoles then it is fair to bash it.
You may as well throw the iPhone into the argument too. That's selling a lot and has similar specs to the Wii. (A lot better in many areas!)

Talk about - as you said "for what it is" - the greatest party console around. I think that is fair.
I understand that is what you have done in your article, so I shouldn't direct this at you. But other writers DO compare the Wii to the current gen consoles and DO go on about it being the top current gen console. It isn't. It is selling more units that the two current gen consoles, but it doesn't qualify as one...

If your console is never even considered compentition then you know how much people think about it. Until there are decent games out there for it no one is going to talk about anything but console sales. It's fun to play and as far as party games go i would say its the best console for that but i think the best party games are still guitar hero or rock band which are multiplat. The wii will die down everyone knows it even the owners heck if they had enough consoles nobody would be talking about it already. Doesn't matter though the wii is a companion console for most gamers i will get one eventually.

I'm convinced that the hostility/bashing surrounding the gaming industry has a lot to do w/ the fact that a significant percentage of the gaming community is composed of individuals who have yet to reach the mature mindset typically developed in adulthood and therefore aren't open-minded enough to accept ideas/views that differ from their own. It's not an issue of ppls' attitudes as much as it is an issue of psychological development.

There are competitive industries that have been around far longer than gaming but have never reached the level of fanboy saturation that we see in gaming nowadays I believe because the ppl that generally concern themselves w/ these industries are mentally mature. The japanese vs american car debate has been raging on for decades but you won't find nearly as many fanboys in that scene as you will in gaming, and the fanboys that you do find are generally teens and young adults.

Can I just ask you why you picked Wii over PS3 or 360?

I'm guessing it's because of the Nintendo exclusives. Galaxy, Metroid Prime etc. (That's why I initially bought one.)

It's not because of the hardware - neither of us are going to argue whether the Wii is anything much more than a gamecube, PS2 or PSP.
It's probably not because of the Wii-mote either, because I don't see Wii Sports, Wario Ware, Rabbit Rabbids in that list (although I'm guessing you probably have Wii Sports, but for some reason it didn't make your list).
And apart from Prime 3 all those other games would play nearly identically with a standard controller. Just swap a little waggle here or there for a button press.

Are you not irked that you have essentially bought a gamecube for 4 or 5 times the price that it should be? And you've had to do that just so you can continue to play current Nintendo games built to last gen standards. (Except Galaxy - Galaxy is wicked)

I love Nintendo franchises, but I don't love them enough to keep lining Nintendo's pockets for incremental game upgrades.
