If Blu-ray fails(I doubt it will mind),but Sony have options to,that's why they have done a partnership with NEC which backs HD-DVD.Sony have interests in both Blu-ray & HD-DVD.

now they heard that MS are going to switch to Blu-ray if necessary and there saying ps3 failed and blu-ray will fail too, i don't get'em. ok can u guys tell me why NINTENDO and M$ signed up for cell. i think they wanna be like sony. who the hell cares, my xbox is for GAMES and if you just wait for all the suckers to buy first gen blu ray and hd dvd players (just like plasma tvs back in the day) then in the end the price will come down and you will be able to get hybrid players at a decent price, no way in hell i would pay top dollar for first gen players! and no way in hell i would want to put extra wear n tear on my console just to play movies, i didnt do it with my ps2 or xbox1, so people get over it...

I'm disappointed that Microsoft has shown weakness and uncertainty towards their respected format, hd-dvd, especially this early in the race. As far as I know, neither format has yet to gain any steam and it'll be at least a couple years before the any of the next-gen formats to becomes mainstream, especially since there are still many yet with an HDTV. As far as which format may fly, I have to put my cards in for the hd-dvd only because of consumer familarity with the dvd name regaurdless of which technology is better. Price is a factor too and if blu-ray isn't cheaper then hd-dvd, sony will have a problem on their hands.

Honesly if blu-ray wins the format war and I get to buy a stand alone player for $200 the most, then I am ok with it. The same goes for HD-DVD.

God I hate this Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD sh!t DVD is a dying technology. Large Capacity hard drives the size of an IPOD that hold 20 -50 of these HD movies is where were heading. One device to plug into any HD tv set, computer or gaming system. It Can be taken anyware say blockbuster, drug store or just download anything.

The 360 is not dependent on the success of either HD optical format. This is smart by MS. If bluray fails, Sony and the PS3 fail. It makes no difference which format wins the war for the 360. MS said this a LONG time ago. They will make an add on for which ever format wins. At this point, they back HD-DVD. It just goes to show that the 360 is more focused on gaming than this overhyped movie format war. I'm glad for this as I buy a game console to play games.

I agree...I dont really care about watching Talladega Nights in HD...I want the the best games and clearly the Xbox 360 beats the PS3.

But its good to see Microsoft has it all planned out and ready to upgrade if need be....while the PS3 blue ray is all or nothing!

Doing a player - why not. Doing a player that is free of bugs and all those little inconveniences - a tough thing to do.

Sony has got a ton of experience in that area because of their home electronics background, MS gotta work their way in if they're gonna really compete.

Some of you got it backwards! If PS3 fails blu ray fails not the other way around! At least Sony is giving Blu ray the best chance to previel by implimenting this technology into the PS3. On a side note it isn't out of the question think that maybe developers asked Sony to out this technology into the PS3 kind of like how epic did with MS and the 360!

I think HD DVD has NO chance because MS opted to not put the format into 360 from day one! If they had this format war "could" already be over or pretty damn close to it! Add ons suck are rarely ever successful

The simple truth is this, neither bluray or HDDVD will "win" the format war because there is so little demand for a new format from the general public, look past the geeks and salesmen and actually talk to real people and they will tell you that currently DVD is fine for them! The next widespread format will be Hard drives used to save downloaded content! Think abut it, what do eiher of these formats offer over DVD? we switched from VHS to DVD as it gave no decrease in quality over time, widescreen, surround sound, the addiion of special features, the abiliy to skip to any section of film, zoom, multi angle etc but all Bluray and HDDVD do is offer the same stuff at a higher resolution! Its the same reason that DVD audio and SACD failed, it didnt offer anything over CD that fundamentally changed how we exprience music! The only reason either of these formats are getting released is a pure money making exercise as neither Sony or Toshiba held a majority of the patents on standard DVD so they dont think they made enough money from it! 9GB is plenty enough space for anything, both game and movie!

IS the only reason why the game community is divided right now. If Sony would not have made this a standard to benefit them (self), gamers would not be entangled in this mess.

But I'm glad to be a 360 owner because we have a choice.
Bottom line. Now the PS3 has to prove that BR is about games and not their market shares and M$ can just chill and be down for what ever.

Honestly I have no idea what your trying to say to me? What's your point? Am I a fanboy NO! Do I like the decisions MS has made regarding the 360? Yes and no but a lot more towards no! I like what Sony is offering in the PS3 and I really enjoy the first party games they create! ICo, shadow of colosous, and god of war 1 and 2 just to name a few! Then they have all third party support with THE MOST talent and credibilty, such as square, level 5, isomanic, konami, capcom, factor 5, naughty dogg, ect. Ect. And yes I do approve of them using a NEXT GEN media drive on a NEXT GEN system! They have the history of making good use of these formats in both PS2 and PSone! What is wrong with given developers like square more space? What's wrong with being able to use my new HD TV with movies and games? Sony has always delivered in terms of consoles and great games so why would I have any reason to doubt them now?

I'm not bashing MS I bought a 360 and I just wasn't satified with the games they have! Yes they have some good ones but NOTHING ground breaking, I am not impressed! They don't have one game out yet in a year that really gives the 360 an identity! Why does it take a year to really give me a title that is next gen like GOW? A year after launch and there see 360s at every major store in Las Vegas (where I live) and 360 is the only new console out!

Um not the one who has NO intentions of buying a PS3 but yet you spend 95% of your time on the PS3 side bashing something you have no interest in and furthermore instead of enjoying your 360 experience and have converstions about it with your 360 friends you spend your time bashing the PS3!

And no I won't let MS get away with there pitiful 1st year of upgrades and PC ports! All at a higher price of $60! I expect more! Answer this question why is it that BOTH Sony and Nintendo are launching consoles with AAA exclusives right out the gate but MS who has had a year all to themselves can't muster up on truly Next Gen game for a year?
