F2P: Why it's a fighting model for the future

During E3, Microsoft lifted the lid on a project many gamers have dreamt about for years. After a wealth of speculation, they revealed that Killer Instinct will not only be making a return, it’ll be available at launch for Xbox One.

On paper, a launch title like that doesn’t get much bigger.

However, perceptions soon started to change. Details started to trickle through and more was revealed about this highly anticipated re-imagining.

All too soon the dream game turned into a nightmare…

It’s now been over a month since E3 and Expansive have had some time to think about the announcement and see the game gradually come together through trailers and reveals.

Killer Instinct may be about to break new ground on Xbox One. In fact, it could set the tone for all future fighters to come…

the Revolution was brought by Tekken.

Omegasyde4695d ago

Exactly and their model is superior. Paying to unlock characters is BS, which MS borrowed a page from Crapcom.

Tekken coin system work (granted it takes alot of giftpoints). If you want to pay to take short cuts i.e. exp boosters thats fine (IMHO) as long as the game is free to play.

MrMister4695d ago

Will they at least let me buy the game at a singular price? I don't want to buy one character at a time. Feels like a phone game.

Fireseed4695d ago

They've already stated you can.

Kanzes4695d ago (Edited 4695d ago )

Yes, you can buy all characters at full price

kewlkat0074695d ago

You can buy the whole game if you want to..One of the advantages of this pay-per-character model is that, for gamers don't don't really play fighting games, they can sorta lure them in, without them having to buy the whole game with all the characters.

BuffMordecai4695d ago

I don't want any part of this future.

Fireseed4695d ago

I take it you'd prefer to spend 40 to 50 dollars on a stand alone copy of an upgraded version of the game that only contains 4 new characters and some stages then? Well you can keep that past.

Kanzes4695d ago (Edited 4695d ago )

As long the microtransaction doesn't make the game a 'Pay-to-win' game, I'm fine with it. Dota 2 is the good example of good F2P game.

As for Killer Instinct, I think it's a good idea. We got a choice. And we got a chance to test the game before buying any character.

JokesOnYou4695d ago

BuffMordecai if you like buying full games nothings changed for your future, buy the full KI game while others pay for individual charachters.

Omegasyde4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Here is my question for you. Say the roster is 20 characters. The game launched free with 3 characters or pay the full $60 for 20 characters...

Say I decide to go the F2P route and buy 4 more character at $4.99 a piece (seems like the average rate). So now after purchasing the 4 extra characters I have a total of 7 characters.

...So I decide I really like this game and want it all. So I have two options
(A) buy the full game ($60) USD and eat the $20 (ala carte purchases)

or

(B) Do I pay for 13 more (a total of 65$ more)?

The obvious answer is Option A, since you save 5$. Now if the 60$ was prorated to what you already invested then I would say the model is genius but I highly doubt that.

ASBO-54694d ago

I totally agree, if this kind of bullshit becomes the norm, count me out.

This is not the first free to play fighting game -.-

@Kanzes yeah but honestly I hate F2P fighting games its like a demo which you extend when you buy more. I don't like that model I just want all my fighters ready to rumble.

Kanzes4695d ago

Read the article, They didn't say that KI is the first one. They just want to explain the perks of F2P games

Fireseed4695d ago

Yeah and you can buy it all at one price.

CYCLEGAMER4695d ago

This is the first game to do F2p in this manor meaning you get the full game with one character with the option to buy more, or you can buy the full game at retail.

People please do your research and know what you are talking about b4 commenting or making bold statements.

Transporter474695d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Specify Full Game with one playable character? Isn't that a way to say Demo, unlike this game F2P games like Planetside 2, DC Universe Online those are fully playable with no restrictions. This is what i mean that i hate this kind of F2P games.

CYCLEGAMER4694d ago

@transporter
First of all, we are talking about fighting games, to my knowledge there is no FIGHTING GAME that offers what killer instinct offers as far as options are concerned.

Second what do you expect? Do you expect a legendary title like Killer Instinct to be completely free?? The object of this method is to get more people into the the game, which will eventually turn others into fighting game fans because it is a free introduction into fighting games.

If you are a fan of fighting games, u would welcome this method.

Transporter474694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

@Melman26 Tekken Revolution is a better example on how to handle KI. Also a better way to launch a free to play game.

Also a "Legendary Title" i'm sorry KI is not a legendary fighting game, now KoF/SF/MVC/DoA/Tekken those are amazing fighting games, and if it was so legendary why didn't we get a sequel since N64, I like KI is just not that amazing game you think it is.

FYI I love fighting games, I have a custom Joystick just for them and my favorite of course are 2D fighters SSFIV AE, UMVC3 and KOF XIII are the main ones that I play.

CYCLEGAMER4694d ago

@transporter
I am not going to argue with you about if Killer Instinct is a legendary fighting game or not. You may be to young to understand the passion that people had for that game, and the impact that Killer Instinct had back then, so I will leave that alone, however there is a reason why people have been asking for this game for so long.

So....after reading your comment I cranked up my Ps3 and downloaded Tekken Revolution simply because I had no understanding of their policies and I wanted to see why you would say that it is a better way to implement f2p.

The first thing I noticed is WOW it has 8 characters cool, this person may be right...then it went all downhill from there.

The the second thing that I noticed is that it is an "always online game" meaning that I have to be connected to the internet to play it....umm....instant fail, what if my connection goes out? No Tekken!

I did not see a vs mode, meaning that I cannot sit at home and play a friend in my house.

You do NOT have to be always online to play the new KI.

You cannot walk into a store and purchase Tekken Revolution, you can purchase Killer instinct at full retail price if you choose to.

Another weird thing is that it operates on some sort of coin system that you can earn and or buy, kind of like a cell phone game. Now don't get me wrong I love Tekken, I have Tekken Tag 2 as well and after playing the two, something just doesn't seem right about Tekken Revolution, it just doesn't feel normal.

As of right now, you sound like a playstation fan who just does not like what Killer Instinct is doing, because it is only on Xbox 1.

If not, tell me what about Tekken Revolutions model makes it better than the Killer Instincts model? With Killer Instinct I have several options to choose from, but with Tekken Revolution I only have one and the game is very limited.

Explain!

why everything that has to do with Microsoft is the future if this game is good its good why oh this is the future and that is the future cloud is the future Drm was the future the hype the hype

fenome4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

Yes it is like a demo, but you still have the option to just get the full game instead. It's a choice dude, you don't gotta buy one character at a time if you don't want to. If you don't want to play it with one character before you buy it then don't, plain and simple. It's just an option, which is a good thing.

Or were you just hoping that they'd just give you the whole game for free out of the kindness of their hearts because you're feeling entitled? This is their job, this is how they get paid. I bet your job would probably like it if you came in for the next week or so without getting paid too. Let's see how that works out for you.

Irrelevant, with Xbox One's inferior fanbase no one would bother with KillerInstinct, first of all it's just nostalgia anyways. not a great game.

Killer Instinct: The Most Underrated Fighting Video Game in History

Killer Instinct is like the forgotten cousin at the fighting game family reunion.

yeah they were such good and fun games but they never really reached the mainstream audience. Killer Instinct was widely known and respected.

Cacabunga400d ago

Killer instinct is great, especially on snes but it’s not the most underrated fighter.. for me it’s Power Stone. So much potential in this series

Jawsh666400d ago

Bloody Roar was a game that had a sick concept but wasn’t made the best. I’d say Killer Instinct was the opposite of that, it was well made but the roster of characters were so similar to every other fighting game in that era that it ended up feeling like more of the same. I could be wrong that’s just how I remember it at the time and I played a ton of KI on SNES because it was one of the first games I owned.

PRIMORDUS400d ago

I loved this game in the arcade, my main was Jago, Ultra Combo!!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DivineHand125399d ago

That combo was way overkill 😂

PRIMORDUS399d ago

I know haha, I loved Jago.

Bathyj400d ago

You're kidding?
It enjoyed probably more success than it deserved.
Unlike Tobal 2

MeteorPanda400d ago

Tobal 2 was awesome. Sold really well cause art similarity to dragon ball

jjb1981400d ago

I remember trying my hardest to learn that "Ultra... Ultra.... Ultra...." finish. Such a great fighting game.

Popsicle400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

I can tell you definitely got some SNES time in. The slight differences in the ports due to hardware constraints were interesting. For example, the arcade version was Ultraaaa Coooommboooooooo! versus Ultra….Ultra….Ultra on the SNES.

Though SNES overachieved as a port for as demanding as a game KI was.The arcade version was one of the first cabinets with a dedicated hard drive and the SNES version was 32 megabyte cartridge which was huge for that system at the time.

jjb1981399d ago

Yeah, for sure. My local childhood arcade was always packed and it was hard to get a game in but once the SNES version came out, I was hooked. I can still feel the click of the power button.

Barlos909d ago

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion909d ago (Edited 909d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH913d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.
