Remembering the N64 - great games with a crazy controller

Despite its flaws, the Nintendo 64 was not only a great system, but a revolutionary one. This video conversation covers the system's best and most important games, from obvious favorites like Ocarina of Time to more niche games like Pokemon Snap.

Time is also given to discus the N64's wacky controller and the system's numerous add-ons.

in my humble opinion, the N64 is perhaps greatest console of all time along with ps2 and ps1

it has the greatest next gen leap of all time, the jump to 3D gfx along with 4 controller ports was the most revolutionary leap of all time

it has the best fps games of all time like goldeneye007, perfect dark and turok series

the best adventure games of all time, Mario 64, banjo kazooie/tooie, conker, rayman 2, dk64

the greatest wrestling games of all time, No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000

and perhaps the best game ever zelda the ocarina of time

also turok series, world is not enough, doom64, blast corpse, duke 64/ duke zero hour, mario kart, f-zero, smash bros, adventure racing, paper mario, wave race , diddy kong racing, star fox 64, jet force gemeni, star wars rogue squadron/shadow of the empire

Greatest console by Nintendo would be the NES or SNES.
I personally give it too the SNES took all the genres the NES made and made them better.
IMO the SNES is the best console period

Themba764683d ago

I still have mine with a boxed copy of majoras mask and perfect dark and 7 other games and 4 controllers 2 of them boxed.

Broke my N64 for out to nostalgia trip while I wait for the new Killer Instinct and man do I miss those days

MiasmaDodo4683d ago

Love you N64!

I remember playing Wave Race with my dad, and then beating Mario 64 with my cousins. (tears)

good memories, great system, amazing games

HugoDrax4683d ago (Edited 4683d ago )

Ah man Wave Race was such a great game, and the soundtrack was catchy as well. Similar to how great the tunes are in Outrun. I remember the day the console released, I picked up my console with Mario 64. A few months later I had gotten Wave Race and I believe a Star Wars game. The timing couldn't have been better as the following 4 days I was out of school due to inclement weather. Till this day, I still pick up my consoles on day one, can't wait for the PS4 & XB1 to release. The tradition continues thanks to Nintendo....

when I was a kid this was the console I got and let me say, it wasn't that great. Sometimes we would only get like 5 games in an entire year while the PS1 was getting hundreds in the same time-frame. This is when Nintendo lost me and I started with the Nes and then Snes and then N64 for obvious reasons but ever since Iwata became Nintendo's boss the company went down the drain.

The N64 has so few good games you could count them all in one hand. XD

BillytheBarbarian4683d ago

PS1 got a ton of shovelware. I'll take an N64 with their top 20 games versus a PS1 and it's top 30.

N64 was King.

Mrgolden794683d ago

Sorry I have to disagree. I can easily name way more great games for PsOne than I could for N64. To each their own I guess.

Mrgolden794683d ago

100 percent agree with you. As a kid I remember religiously saving up my hard earned cash until I got $300 to buy the system. While my friends were playing play station, I waited it out until N64 came out and boy was I disappointed. While my friends were playing Legacy of Kain, Tekken, Tenchu, Final Fantasy VII, Bushido Blade, Xenogears, Castlevania SOTN, etc., I was playing Mario 64 and Golden Eye, and Zelda Ocarina of Time. Granted, these were good games, but not nearly enough as what was seen on Psone.

There were lots of limitations on what devs could do with the machine since it used old cartridge technology instead of CD, such as no FMV videos and less memory for voice acting work. On top of that, N64 graphics were notoriously blurry. Nintendo went from having my favorite console of all time (SNES) to a big step down in N64 IMHO. As a kid, this was a very expensive lesson in not basing my decision on the brand of the product, but actually on what the device is capable of.

BillytheBarbarian4682d ago (Edited 4682d ago )

Ps1 games were jaggie which is worse than blurry. Just put blitz, madden, Tony hawk, or resident evil2 side by side. N64 wins every time. Ps1 games were ugly.

TheFirstClassic4682d ago

Ok here we go...

Mario 64
Banjo kazooie
Banjo tooie
Donkey kong 64
Goldeneye
The world is not enough
Turok
Turok 2
Turok rage wars
Turok 3
Perfect dark
Conkers bad fur day
Battletanx
Battletanx global assault
Mario tennis
Mario party
Mario party 2
Ocarina of friggin time
Majoras mask
Jet force gemini
Smash bros
F zero x
Mario kart 64
Diddy kong racing
Mario golf
Vigilante 8
Blast corps
Wave race 64

I could go on but you get my point. The n64 may not have had as many games as ps1, but on average they were a lot better. To say it has so few good games that you could count them all on one hand is just stupid.

Spinal4682d ago

Dude you left out Starfox 64 lool that was a must have also.

TheFirstClassic4682d ago

@spinalcord dang that should have been one of this first that I thought of. Very fun pick up and play game.

But to be honest there is still more I can think of off the top of my head. Just not gonna bother writing them.

Should've included star fox, rogue squadron, and battle for naboo in that original list though. For anyone who is interested in n64 games go to this link. It's the top 100 n64 games, a list I come to now and again to see if any more games interest me.

N64 Games That Hold Up Brilliantly

It’s true that graphically some of them are a bit rough around the edges, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t games on the N64 that still hold up.

There should be a Mario 64 2 that is a lot like the first one, gameplay wise.

CrimsonWing69493d ago

Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64… man, this was seriously a time where you were feeling gaming gong to the next level. I still think the PS1 library stomped the sh*t out of the N64’s, but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t more than a few bangers on that console.

Gamingsince1981492d ago

I think the n64 is one of the worst consoles for holding up over time, the 3d polygons of the games were very early iterations and pretty much all look like crap today, such as Mario 64.

CrimsonWing69492d ago (Edited 492d ago )

Yea, I mean for sure, a lot of things don’t hold up, but it’s got plenty of games that were on PS1 (sans FMV except for whatever black magic was done for RE2), that despite looking outdated, the art direction, charm, and passion behind it sells it for me.

Like visually Mario 64 is pretty rudimentary, but man… when you play that game, at least for me, the nostalgia hits f*cking hard. Ocarina of Time was one of the games that changed my perspective from games just being something you do out of boredom to things of art. Gokdeneye was something me and my friends would just gather around and play for hours after school. So, the N64 will always have a special place in my heart.
