PS4 and Xbox One controllers: How we can fix controller stagnation

Video games have come a long way in the last three decades, but controllers have been very slow to change.

There is only so much a person's hand can manage. Frankly, the old maxim if it ain't broke don't fix it applies here.

Pisque4726d ago

I think the sticks for the Dualshocks are not well placed, the Xbox controller is too heavy, and doesn't have rechargeable batteries included.

I know and respect what you mean but there has to be improvements.

Furi174726d ago

What if I told you you have simmetrical hands.
What if I told you MS put the sticks in that positions because was afraid of a Sony patent lawsuit.

SilentGuard4726d ago

@mkotechno: lay your hand down on a table in a relaxed state and your thumb, if normal, will be facing up and not off to a 90 degree angle from your hand. Xbox controller allows your left thumb to be placed at the analog stick; which is used primarily over the d-pad since 3d gaming became the norm; in a more natural relaxed position. If Sony's thumbstick is placed in a more natural position than why didn't they put the d-pad there on the original PS1 controller?

The right thumbstick is a different story as its not used quite as much as the left one as it most often controls camera, not movement. Since we tend to use buttons quite a bit in games it makes sense to put the buttons in the dominant position on the right side. The Dualshock thumbstick layout is an archaic design going back to when the thumbsticks were put on as an afterthought.

hellvaguy4724d ago

If xbox was "afraid" of a symmetrical controller lawsuit, then why are a few new pc controllers and the newer wiiu that way? 1/10 troll.

FanboyCrusher4726d ago

I respectfully disagree. We have an entire under side of the controller. And you have at the least 2 fingers on the bottom, if not 3 like I do. They're not "broke" necessarily, but we have room for improvement, hence why we have the Xbox One controller and the DS4 on the PS4. Both improved, though I'm not fond of the bumpers on X1, though I haven't actually held it so I'll reserve judgment. mini rant aside, we could easily have 2, if not 4 buttons on the under side fixing a lot of games being plagued by horrid control schemes.

Mounce4726d ago

"Don't fix what isn't broken" -

Pretty much what I was going to say.

JunioRS1014726d ago

But in comparison, our hands have been pretty much the same for thousands of years... So it makes sense that the input from your good ol' hands stays relatively the same.

BillytheBarbarian4726d ago

If they could just put the old Sega Genesis 6-button dpad on the 360 controller it would be perfect. I hate the dpads for Sony and 360. They're terrible for fighters.

Gran Touring4726d ago

I beg to differ. The old playstation controller d-pads, (while no replacement for an arcade stick) are pretty darn good for fighters. There are some tournament players out there that still use their PS3 gamepad preferably over a stick. Heck, even I learned how to wave dash in Tekken using the pad.

BillytheBarbarian4726d ago

I never liked sony's dpad. It was always felt like 4 separate buttons like n64's C buttons. It's terrible. Very archaic. Nintendo has a patent on their design. Not sure about Sega.

elhebbo164726d ago

all i want for the next-gen controller is more accurate thumbsticks with a smaller deadzone.

FanboyCrusher4726d ago

Unfortunately the dead zone on the 360 controller gets worse as you play with the controller more. Takes a lot of play to make it worse, but it's still annoying. Glad the new ones take less pressure to move, makes getting out of the dead zone that much quicker.

lgn154726d ago

They also have a reduced dead zone for more precise gaming. Can't wait to try ti with Forza 5

coolasj4726d ago

It's not stagnation, it's a design principal called Convergence. I urge anyone interested to look up the literal definition but basically, it states something like this.

Natural and manmade entities will start to converge on the best design to support a function given enough time and iterations.

It's been 8 generations, we've reached basically the height of how to control video games. Everything else is just a tweak, by comparison.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot53d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose54d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE54d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername53d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy54d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde53d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8653d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8653d ago (Edited 53d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300054d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle53d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
