Microsoft's Alleged Collaboration with NSA

Microsoft's participation in the NSA's surveillance programs may be more extensive than previously thought. New documents from whistleblower Edward Snowden obtained by The Guardian claim that Microsoft has worked with US intelligence agencies to provide streamlined access to its services, including Outlook.com, Hotmail, Skype, SkyDrive, and more. Over the last three years, Microsoft has reportedly assisted the FBI and NSA in encryption bypassing its products' encryption

malokevi4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

I don't think this should come as a surprise to anyone. Ever since 9/11, the government has leveraged the patriot act and other congressional bills to get information in the interest of "public safety".

Whether or not this is right, its the world we live in. The cost of remaining free from "terror" appears to be our privacy and our liberties.

Personally, I think its a bunch of BS, but far be it from me to go tit-for-tat with the American government. Until Islamist extremists are wiped off the planet (I'm gonna say... never), we will live in perpetual fear, and thus, under perpetual surveillance.

This isn't just Microsoft. Its everyone. I'm sure the Chinese are equally familiar with the inner workings of American networks...

Life's a beach. Play ball? Personally, I take it in stride. Nothing can be done, so we might as well just let it go and enjoy our videogames while we can.

ShwankyShpanky4700d ago (Edited 4700d ago )

>>Until Islamist extremists are wiped off the planet (I'm gonna say... never), we will live in perpetual fear, and thus, under perpetual surveillance.

Maybe if the US and other western nations (and their proxies) stopped funding, training, and equipping these "Islamist extremists," they'd dissipate more quickly. Besides, didn't you know? The the DHS claims that the real "terror threat" is American citizens and veterans that are dissatisfied with their government. The encroaching police state was *never* intended as a tool to stop Islamic terrorism; it was constructed and is operated with the average American citizen as the target.

I do not live in fear of terrorism. I could list fifty things that are more likely to kill you than a "terrorist," including bee stings, bathtub drownings, or being struck by lightning. "Terrorism" is a farce that's constantly thrown in your face to justify unlimited surveillance and the destruction of your rights.

>>Nothing can be done, so we might as well just let it go and enjoy our videogames while we can.

Nothing can be done, or nothing will be done? Fostering the sense of self-imposed impotence is one of the strongest tools of the powers-that-be.

But hey... enjoy your Kinect, folks. Say "cheese."

P.S. Can we please not have any of the idiot comments about how if MS was "caught spying" how they would be sued or go to jail or whatever nonsense. Participants in these programs are granted legal immunity. That should be patently obvious, considering how much they *have* been caught spying via other means.

P.P.S. From the Guardian:
"• The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide"

The powah of teh clowd!

"• Skype, which was bought by Microsoft in October 2011, worked with intelligence agencies last year to allow Prism to collect video of conversations as well as audio"

Bu-bu-but... they can't record you because they can't store all the data! (Oh, the new facility in Utah can store yottabytes of data? Oh... um... well... Xbox, watch Price is Right! Pretty cool, huh? Huh?"

"The company reiterated its argument that it provides customer data "only in response to government demands and we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers"."

Well isn't that nice. Okay, so that's the only time that MS "provides" the information (whenever they're asked, great safeguard there). What about information that isn't "provided," but that the NSA just takes of their own volition, considering you've admitted to granting them direct access to your systems?

"Since Prism's existence became public, Microsoft and the other companies listed on the NSA documents as providers have denied all knowledge of the program and insisted that the intelligence agencies do not have back doors into their systems."

Because they're obligated by law to disavow knowledge. Too bad the docs say otherwise.

malokevi4700d ago

Christ! Paranoid rant of the year. It's bad, yeah.... but do you honestly care that much? Can you honestly say none of that is expected?

What are you going to do about it, besides type paragraphs?

For now, we are generally safe on this planet and in this country. Until that changes, nobody is interested in paranoid fantasy.

Live your life.

adorie4700d ago

The NSA lies and have lied in public and have taken down documents they came up with because of fallacies in them.

The way they lie, though... it reminds me how Ben Bernanke lies to congress when grilled.

XtraTrstrL4700d ago

This, Homeland Security stocked up on an insane amount of armored vehicles, weapons and ammo a little while back. There were questions about why they would need such immense amounts of artillery.

I always think about the George W. Bush quote, "You're either with us or you're with the terrorists."

So, if for instance, you find the government is clearly breaching the constitution and you dare speak out against that, then you are considered a terrorist and you can be targeted.

S2Killinit4700d ago

@ShwankyShpanky
The most intelligent comment. And then you've got malokevi saying your paranoid because you should expect them to spy on you and... that you shouldn't make this argument because you "can't do anything about it besides type paragraphs" lol I mean how simple minded does one have to be? I don't even know where to begin arguing against a comment like that. Then he says "no body is interested in your paranoid fantasy because we are safe for now" lol I'll go kill myself now.

SpideySpeakz4699d ago

We were feed these lies about how dangerous Islamic groups are to the US. But in all honestly, they're terrorist because our US government's foreign policies suck. If we get OUT the middle-east, stop drone striking innocent people, we wouldn't have all these fears of terrorist plots. The US has too much influence within these regions. These Islamist feel the US is a Imperial threat, therefore, they feel they need to act in self-defense. It's funny how we never had to worry about Islamic terrorist until after the Golf War.

Even if Islamist wanted to destroy just for the sake of it, why should we give up our rights to big corporations like MS just to feel safe?

malokevi4699d ago

Lol. Keyboard warriors. You are all hypocrites. Why am I not surprised? This is N4G, after all... XD

Sure, go about pretending to be surprised that the Government is in your business, and then go ahead and be all pissed off about it. You are in for a sad and terrible life.

ShwankyShpanky4699d ago (Edited 4699d ago )

Why don't you write a letter to the Guardian about their "paranoid fantasy?" And I'll take your baseless "hypocrite" charge and raise you a healthy helping of your own cognitive dissonance... on the one hand you say we should stop "pretending to be surprised," as if it's a given and should be expected, and then you go on to call it "paranoid fantasy." Doesn't quite mesh. And no, I never "pretended to be surprised," because I've known for years (as should anyone that's been paying an iota of attention) that these types of things have been going on. The only thing that I find remotely surprising is that there are still people that can dismiss these things as "paranoid fantasy" in the face of the scores of articles and disclosures that have been come out about the subject over the years.

>>"What are you going to do about it, besides type paragraphs?"

Well, since it's been pretty clearly established that everything's being sucked up by the NSA, it wouldn't be very prudent for me to provide specifics here, would it? And that's what people like you can't seem to grasp. You're one of these "if you're not doing anything wrong" chumps that can't understand that what is considered "wrong" in the eyes of the establishment is different from that of the average citizen. Perfectly legal actions that challenge the status quo can quite easily earn the negative attention of government agencies. They spied on *Mennonites* because they were doing anti-war protests. Though there has been a lot of that Amish terrorism lately, what with their constant buggy-bombs and all.

>>Sure, go about pretending to be surprised that the Government is in your business, and then go ahead and be all pissed off about it. You are in for a sad and terrible life.

Sure, go about bending over while your rights are stripped away, and then go ahead and be all indifferent about it. You're just too cool for school, or your own civil rights, I guess.

My life is far from sad and miserable, and at least it's being lived in the real world, not some blind, complacent fantasy.

P.S.

Microsoft provides fusion center technology and funding for surveillance
https://www.networkworld.co...

"The ACLU's Privacy SOS presented a great article about why "it's time to pull the plug on fusion centers!" While it's well-known that Microsoft has a great and long-standing relationship with government, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies, Privacy SOS pointed out the interesting tidbit that Microsoft helps pay for fusions centers. Fusion Centers, in turn, give out grants to police departments for new surveillance technologies.

"A bipartisan Senate investigation and report previously found that fusion centers are basically 'useless' in countering terrorism, but 'troubling' when it came to violating the privacy and civil liberties of U.S. citizens."

@ malokevi

You don't seem to remember your history class very well. And I bet you only had a small interest in psychology.

Our forefathers fought for an idea. This ideal reality has been malformed by extremists of many types. We do not have freedom of speech. "Oprah vs Tyson foods." e do not have the right to bare arms "New Mexico's open carrying law." We are not allowed to overthrow our government because too many people depend on the government to govern their lives. "food stamps."

I have never needed anything from the government, but they want more and more from me. In the words of Huebert J. Farnesworth: "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."

Sadly we have to live in it.

@shwankyshpanky

I don't see you holding up a rifle. I don't see a militia. I don't see people roaring down the streets to their nearest representative to change this world back to that original idea. Why? In the words of Julius Caesar: "If you give them bread and circuses, then they will never revolt."

You have to be really that stupid?

Let me help you, let's imagine we live in this world in where 1% of the people have all the real power, this 1% don't care about you or anyone and they only use you as a toy to reach their agendas goals. They are actually really bad, sick from their mind and really crazy and disgusting, they are truly psychos.

And there are good people around the world like you but that happen to be aware unlile you and inform with information of how to really heal cancer, autism and anything you can think off, you name it, I can heal it.

But this one % don't want that information to go out, they don't want people aware of their existence and how sick they this 1% is, and all the bad things they do.

With spying on everyone at deeper levels this %1 using their power the $ the one they have unlimited access to and we are live or work for. Use us as sheeps to spy on ourseld and stop ourself.

Now try to understand that this is as real as yellow been yellow and blue been blue. If you can understand this, you will understand what's the truly evil agenda behind this BS and why you should be against it.

"Microsoft's Alleged Collaboration with NSA"

It's probably true, and it's not only Microsoft. NSA have their claws in most of the biggest companies that operate in the USA. Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Apple, Sony, Samsung, etc...

Muffins12234700d ago

Honestly i dont care....almost every person needs to use technology to communicate and get stuff done and the bad ones can easily get caught or arrested.I dont care if they know about what i say in my text...there not going to do anything as long as its not me planning out to kill some one...the only people who should be against this are people who pirate and steal and murder and plan crimes.IF your honestly that self concise about yourself if the government has access to your secret(which they don't know it,they search for certain words in there database and if you state something that's about murder, drugs,or crime your likely to show up on there database) This is not just usa, france dose the same thing and almost all countries do this) Nothing is wrong with this, people need to just accept it and move on. Your list was fine until you added Sony and Samsung, 1 is a japanese company and the other 1 is a south korean company. That's where you are wrong with those 2 being associated with NSA.

fermcr4699d ago (Edited 4699d ago )

Since Sony and Samsung also operate in the USA, their american branch have to follow american laws... so yes, NSA have their claws on their (Sony and Samsung) american branches. If NSA wants to see you PSN data or your Android info of your Samsung smartphone, they will.

jairusmonillas4699d ago

Not as much as Microsoft is doing. Hell they even made it too obvious by putting Kinect as "MANDATORY".

hellvaguy4699d ago

Sony has several large corporate building in the u.s. Who's laws do you suppose they have to follow?

Also Samsung is building this sweet 300M+ corporate building in Callifonia.

S2Killinit4699d ago

@fermcr
Sony is not involved with NSA. There are articles outlining all the companies involved and they are the big corps like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and some others I don't remember. But Microsoft seems to be in a level all its own because the guy who leaked the info about spying on American citizens has recently mentioned Microsoft above all the other companies involved.

Conzul4699d ago

I posit that the willingness of Sony, Samsung to capitulate to the NSA is significantly lower than MS, YAHOO, etc.

Though whether or not this has a tangible effect is un-knowable.

- If you want to let the NSA know how you feel, just send an email to yourself.

- I just smashed open my Windows Phone and there were all sorts of electronics inside it. Some green board with wires and circuitry. A microphone and an earpiece. I'm being spied on.

-I went to the mall and saw a sign with a map of the building and an arrow pointing:

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose26d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE25d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername25d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy25d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde25d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8625d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8625d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
