Pricing in the Next Gen

$59.99. That is the standard price for nearly every single game to hit retail and digital download in today’s gaming market. That is the standard for the triple-A titles and…the not so much. It’s the universal standard for great games, good games, and bad games... but is that standard justified?

well, it's a case of paying less for more with PS4 and paying more for less on xbone. Well, less plus a spy camera in your living room.

JBSleek4694d ago

Everyone who says spy cam I feel are stupid.

You use a phone by either Google Apple or MS you are already profiled.

You use a computer laptop or tablet by them you are being profiled.

Google search? They know your habits.

I just find the spy camera to be the worse argument because if you are truly concerned about your privacy I would suggest throwing away most of your electronics.

JBSleek, that's a very narrow minded view. Your cell phone camera wasn't made WITH the NSA and FBI. The Kinect was.

cunnilumpkin4694d ago (Edited 4694d ago )

not seen a single game yet worth the $6800 (plus taxes) a ps4 or xbox1 would cost me

ps4=$400
psn/8 years=$400
100 games in 8 years=$6000 (that's only buying a game a month)

f all that, STEAM SALE!

jbond10104693d ago

Do you buy a new game EVERY month religiously though?

I certainly do not. And you're also not factoring that PSPlus (PSN) provides free games very frequently (for PSVita and the PS3) so the $400 cost becomes insignificant as you download FREE games that would have cost you $40-60 each.

PigPen4693d ago

It soon will be justified. When triple A games don't sell enough copies, much more developers will be closing their doors. It will get to a point that multi platform games will go back to being the normal. The Wii U will get 3rd party love and will also be the standard to justify the $60 dollar price tag.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8520d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele20d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk20d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit20d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg19d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev: Big Studios Are 'Forced' to Hire Like Factories

There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

DarXyde27d ago

More than that, it's logistically untenable. Inevitably, when teams get too large, how do you keep tabs on accountability? I suspect this massive team size is a consequence of the perfectionism streak Naughty Dog has.

I wish we could have so many people working on something and it turns out great because I'm all for collaboration in spirit - the problem is too many people as part of the larger team and smaller units. Suppose for example that you have too many people in the art department; you will very often come up against fiercely competing visions for how things should look. That competitive vision will cause friction between team members, team doesn't work as a unit, the back and forth can further delay parts that the other departments are waiting for, etc etc.

A 200-person team says, to me, that we need to scale back game development. Even if it means we go back to PS2 era costs and scale, why not? Those games are still great fun, the budgets were in check, and you could literally break the 200-man team into like 10 20-man teams working on different projects.
