PSM3 PS3 Arrival

"We unpacked it, boshed it on and haven't stopped playing yet. Lots more tomorrow, but here's our findings so far:

1) It's SUPERQUIET. Yes, we've said it before but we're still surprised. It makes less noise than a PS2 - just a thin, quiet whirr of a fan.
2) It gets warm - but not hot. The fan blows air out of the back and out of the top of the machine (when it's in its upright position). It's a bit weird. You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'.
3) Loading discs is a quick, no fuss operation.
4) Screen modes up to 1080p are available - but the games we currently have don't offer 1080 modes.
5) It's see through. You can see all the innards through the smoked black plastic exterior
6) It creaks when you pick it up. The panels groan slightly with the weight of the innards
7) The power supply is built it - which accounts for what heat there is and makes it a single self contained unit (as opposed to 360's game of two halves).
8) The menus are very easy to understand. It's literally just like a PSP.
9) Games seem to leave a data folder behind on the HD disc (some kind of swap file?) We played Resistance, stopped, looked at the disc from the PS3 menu and found a 33Mb file on there (not in the save game directory). We played MotorStorm, looked again, and it had gone.
10) The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. The new triggers are a bit rubbery too (though do have an 'L4' 'R4' 'click' at the end which we haven't noticed before.
11) We've got code for MotorStorm, Resistance and Genji so far. With more to follow.

That's about it for now.

LOTS more tomorrow."

1- "You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'"

I wonder how this will pan out when people start to install them in their cramped entertainment units...

2- "It creaks when you pick it up. The panels groan slightly with the weight of the innards"

well that sounds reasurringly worth $600

3- "The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. I'm hearing the pad sucks from a variety of sources. Again, makes you wonder where the $600 quality of "eating in a fine restaurant" comes in...

Tut7134d ago

All of those things you mentioned were cosmetic. If I go to eat at a fine restaurant and the food is excellent I got what I payed for. I could care less about how the dishes look or if the silverware is shiny.

=)

Bebedora7134d ago

I clicked disagree on THELANDOFSAND because of the categorically picking of negative aspects. Rightfully commented or not - The positives are left out completely.

peksi7134d ago

Why are you talking about $600? As an Xbox guy you should be fine with $499 model.

satanslilh3lp3r7134d ago

it's like they documented every second of opening it and turning it on. for the most part, good news (see through=spiffy)

FamoAmo7134d ago

I mean it really didn't sound too great and this is coming from Sony magazine.. If you thaw a bagel it definately gets hot and there most likely will be some overheating issues.

Athlon7134d ago (Edited 7134d ago )

You have got to be kidding me. A bagel can thaw at room temperature if you leave it out long enough. How do you jump to such an unfounded conclusion as overheating issues? Next time you play a game put your hand on your television. Warm isn't it? Now, when is the last time your TV overheated? It seems that they were impressed with it to me. At least a better impression than the other said console.

HyperBear7134d ago

he doesnt know anything about cooling heating temps. or he dropped out of school, and is confused. But yea, Bagels can thaw on their own, and that is sarcasm, if you didnt get it, meaning the PS3 is not as hot as the 360 gets.

"...2 years past the release of the 360 to buy a system of equal power that costs twice as much?"-Prospero666
sort of like the 2 years past of the ps2 release and yet the xbox was not all that great
-crack myself up- (i think the ps3 will be considerably better than the xbox360(if you get pass the money part)
-ps3 fund-500

The games helped PS2 dominate, the all around quality of the Xbox was better than PS2 lol. You think PS3 will be better because you're a Sony fan. You can buy one of my PS3's for $1500 with all that wishful hoping. Xbox had better hardware and was built sturdyer than PS2. Believe me! Xplay had a console breaking contest between the Game Cube, PS2 & the Xbox. The PS2 came in dead last and busted very easily with Xbox putting up a dam good fight considering it was the biggest. The GameCube was the most durable. Don't worry The 360 creaks under it's weight also. (i think the 360 will be a better console because im a 360 fan and i do tons of reading.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle9d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde16d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy16d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga17d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199217d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga16d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman16d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box17d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion16d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7217d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7517d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit17d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14917d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7717d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
