Game developer thinks graphics are all that matters in games

A game developer at Visceral recently wrote an article stating that video games today are bigger and better looking than previous games were and that is why development budgets are so huge. When confronted with proof that older games score and sell better than new ones do, he says any of the top scored games would lose to newly released games, calls the person a troll, and Twitter blocks him. Is this truly what game developers believe? That only better looking graphics matter?

The Walking Dead says something else. I think it is a wonderful game and its graphics are nothing to be amazed. Same goes for other great games out there.

Would The Last Of Us not be an awesome game if it didn't have such beautiful graphics? It would still be something special thanks to the story and gameplay.

Graphics are a plus and something every gamer loves including me, but to say it's all that matters in games is wrong, even more coming from a developer.

Doctor_Freeman4692d ago (Edited 4692d ago )

It could be the most beautiful game in existence, but if the gameplay is boring than there's really no point for me.

Gameplay----------->graphi cs

I'm looking for games that have the whole package, if I pay premium doe then I want a premium products. Not just a pretty turd.

Crysis is a great example of a series that lacks completely in gameplay and tries to compensate with shiny graphics

MidnytRain4691d ago

At the same time, I think if a full retail release of a game looks unintentionally simplistic and bland, it'll get criticized.

carlingtat4692d ago

The Walking Dead had its own art style which looks fantastic as well as resembling the source material of the comic books.

I would much rather play a Highly detailed 2D sprite JRPG with a cool Art style over some High def graphics game with mostly grey brown and washed out yellow colors.

Agent_hitman4692d ago

True, if we talk about the visual standards of today's gaming. Bu that doesnt mean that 70% of the game should focus solely on VFX but also on Story/plot and multiplayer.

Zodiac4692d ago

What about an example of a "newly released" game with old graphics beating the fancy lookin' HD games?

Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 both have a meta critic score higher than any game released for ps3/360 aside from GTA4. It is higher than gta4 on other sites.

Great graphics can be a bonus to a game, but when Mario is kicking your ass in SD resolution at a fraction of the development cost, then you know your argument is lost.

TongkatAli4692d ago (Edited 4692d ago )

All the reviews made aren't accounted for in Metacritic.

Also a game in metacritic could have 30 reviews for it and get a 94% then you compare it to a other game that has 60 reviews and that got a 90 %

3-4-54691d ago

metacritic gives a good idea about how good a game could potentially be, but it isn't the 100% proof a game is good or not.

It matters, but it's not the only thing that matters.

I think we are starting to be at a point were this is changing we are seeing more and more indie titles with simpler graphics popping up. They are focused on the gameplay more than other things and I'm enjoying it a lot. Look at recent games a lot of them sold under expectations even if their selling millions. lower budget games and development are gonna become more popular for smaller publishers with new engines like unreal, cryengine and unity its becoming easier to do so.

RememberThe3574692d ago (Edited 4692d ago )

I wouldn't say their focused more on gameplay, many indies have fairly simple controls. I would say though that they are focusing more on the "art" rather than the vanity (i.e. art style/story telling as opposed to big graphics and cool explosions).

TongkatAli4692d ago (Edited 4692d ago )

Indies have no money to make big graphics and cool explosions. They work with what they got and make incredible games for their budget.

For example Drinkbox studios.

rezzah4692d ago

The art style is a big thing for Indie games, personally that is what stands out the most when I see these games in action.

Yodagamer4690d ago (Edited 4690d ago )

I'd honestly say they are focused on gameplay more than anything look at some indies Meatboy focused on hard platforming, braid focused on time mechanics, world of goo focused on building a structure and flower was collecting pedals. They certainly focus on gameplay and they polish them to a gleam. The art is just the icing on the cake imo.

No, this is not what "game developers" think. This is one guy. Modern graphics are clearly the reason budgets have ballooned over the years but graphics are just a part of the game, a part of the game most gaming stop focusing on once they start playing. Gameplay has improved drastically over hte years and thats why IMO many newer games are better than their older counter parts. Now developers need to start building some compelling narrative (e.g. The Last of Us) and we'll have ourselves the perfect hobby.

azazel6654692d ago

The title doesn't say game developers, it says game developer. Singular.

Hicken4692d ago

It then goes on to ask, " Is this truly what game developers believe? That only better looking graphics matter?"

And no, they don't. Nor should he. It's a stupid position.

Graphics are important, to a certain degree, but not "all that matters," not by a long shot.

RememberThe3574691d ago

Hicken, I told you I got you on those bubbles.

integrity: intact.

I aint stoppin either. We're getting them suckas back!

Hicken4691d ago

Good luck. You'll be up against MikeMyers and his cronies, and they play hard ball, lol.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman27d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
