A game developer at Visceral recently wrote an article stating that video games today are bigger and better looking than previous games were and that is why development budgets are so huge. When confronted with proof that older games score and sell better than new ones do, he says any of the top scored games would lose to newly released games, calls the person a troll, and Twitter blocks him. Is this truly what game developers believe? That only better looking graphics matter?

New report from Skillsearch found that 22% of those surveyed had been laid off within the past 12 months.

It's a step forward for Stop Killing Games.

The Callisto Protocol director thinks the solution involves the right people, the right timing, and perhaps a little bit of AI
I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise
We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.
Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.
it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.
This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
The Walking Dead says something else. I think it is a wonderful game and its graphics are nothing to be amazed. Same goes for other great games out there.
Would The Last Of Us not be an awesome game if it didn't have such beautiful graphics? It would still be something special thanks to the story and gameplay.
Graphics are a plus and something every gamer loves including me, but to say it's all that matters in games is wrong, even more coming from a developer.
True, if we talk about the visual standards of today's gaming. Bu that doesnt mean that 70% of the game should focus solely on VFX but also on Story/plot and multiplayer.
What about an example of a "newly released" game with old graphics beating the fancy lookin' HD games?
Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 both have a meta critic score higher than any game released for ps3/360 aside from GTA4. It is higher than gta4 on other sites.
Great graphics can be a bonus to a game, but when Mario is kicking your ass in SD resolution at a fraction of the development cost, then you know your argument is lost.
I think we are starting to be at a point were this is changing we are seeing more and more indie titles with simpler graphics popping up. They are focused on the gameplay more than other things and I'm enjoying it a lot. Look at recent games a lot of them sold under expectations even if their selling millions. lower budget games and development are gonna become more popular for smaller publishers with new engines like unreal, cryengine and unity its becoming easier to do so.
No, this is not what "game developers" think. This is one guy. Modern graphics are clearly the reason budgets have ballooned over the years but graphics are just a part of the game, a part of the game most gaming stop focusing on once they start playing. Gameplay has improved drastically over hte years and thats why IMO many newer games are better than their older counter parts. Now developers need to start building some compelling narrative (e.g. The Last of Us) and we'll have ourselves the perfect hobby.
