Why Is Sony Not Addressing Digital Backwards Compatibility?

CCC says: "Inserting a PS3 disc into a PS4 or a 360 disc into an Xbox One will do as much good as cramming a GameCube disc in a 3DS. Although it is a bit of a thorn in the side, it’s easily remedied by one of the greatest marvels of modern technology: not throwing away your current system come November. It also raises an interesting question regarding the next generation of console gaming, particularly in the case of the PlayStation 4: What games will we have access to?"

Answer: It's all the same thing. (Disc based or not)

....The hardware and OS is totally different.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt4697d ago

then why are they gonna start allowing us to stream PS3 games next year? makes no sense

FlameHawk4697d ago (Edited 4697d ago )

maybe because they barely bought Gaikai and it takes time to actually prepare it?
Most people don't know but Gaikai has the fastest cloud, I was actually worried that it might lag and stuff but I'm not worried anymore.

Adva4697d ago

You answered yourself; "Streaming". The game won't be running on PS4, it will simply be receiving it from Gakai servers.

jujubee884697d ago

That's your PS4 acting as a host while using "cloud gaming" technology from a Gaikai server.

(Sort of like how PS VITA can't really play PS4 games on it's hardware/OS, but can play the "cloud gaming" experience via Remote-Play)

wenaldy4697d ago

You just answered your own question.. *sigh* The keyword here is ''stream'

darthv724697d ago

right idea, wrong term used. The PS4 is not the host but the client. The host IS the cloud/server.

I knew what you meant and just helping to put into right context.

No worries.

starchild4697d ago

Backwards compatibility achieved through game streaming is less than ideal.

The quality of streaming for one thing is never as good as simply playing the game on your own hardware. There is always going to be significantly more lag and compression artifacts.

Second of all, you have to have an internet connection to even play any of those games.

Third, you don't really own the games. They sit on a server in some remote location and you only have access to that game so long as you can access that server.

Moreover, Sony has to actively add support for each game. Is there any guarantee that your favorite games are going to be supported?

And finally, is there going to be any other fees involved? Do you get to play your old favorites without a PS+ subscription? Or even if you have PS+, do you have to pay additional fees on top of the subscription fee to stream those older games that you already own?

BattleAxe4697d ago (Edited 4697d ago )

Digital backwards compatibility is my biggest issue with the PS4. I realize that you can't run PS3 software on the PS4's architecture, but it would be nice to see Sony address this issue, by allowing you to stream the games you've purchased digitally through GaiKai. What I don't want to do is pay for a streaming service to play games that I've already paid for.

This really bothers me as I can't trade in any of my digital games, and my games library will cease to exist once they decide to finally shut down the Playstation Store for the PS3, three to five years from now. Also, even with my 500GB HDD, I can't fit everything on there, and if my HDD ever craps out, my games are gone for good.

I feel like I've really burned myself for buying digital downloads on a console. I knew there was a risk, but I didn't think Sony would simply cut off this generation from the next generation. In comparison, if we look at Steam, your games collection continues on regardless of what PC you are playing on, and regardless of whatever console generation it is at the time. Needless to say that I'm not likely to ever buy digital downloaded games on a console ever again.

nveenio4696d ago

I just hope we can activate our disc games on the cloud so that we can access them anywhere, not just our digital library. I just think that would be a nice bonus. Whether or not they actually do it...we'll see, I suppose.

I can see why sony chose not to make the ps4 capable of doing it directly. Their Gaikai service seems like the more perfect delivery for BC gaming.

Meaning that all rendering and processing of the game is handled on their side (server side) and we get the finished product streamed to us for play on the ps4. It saves the ps4 (or PS3 and Vita) from having to do all the work.

Quality may be a concern but that might only apply to the speed of the persons connection. Obviously the performance of the game streamed on a 1-3mb connection will not be the same as on a 6, 12, 18+ speed connection but sony will likely use buffering to compensate for speed. Like using a portion of the hdd (or memory card) as virtual space to hold the game data being played while stream loading more as you play.

TheGrimReaper00114697d ago

but wait, if you have to stream the ps1,2 and 3 games via Gaikai, does that mean you also need to have an always internet connection to play those games?

s8anicslayer4697d ago

@ TheGrimReaper Do you know what "Streaming" is? You do know your getting the media through a server? And in order to communicate with the server your device needs to have an internet connection? Oh wait I see now your not really that clueless cause it's not humanly possible, you were being sarcastic and trying to contradict fanboys for bashing the xbone always online and drm debacle.

nukeitall4697d ago (Edited 4697d ago )

@TheGrimReaper0011:

Yup it is, and the check-in time with the servers isn't 24-hours, it is a mere 130 ms!

:D

Roper3164697d ago

" The hardware and OS is totally different. "

That makes no difference in digital BC because it is all done on the server side. So as long as the server is setup properly the only thing the PS4 would be doing is receiving the streamed content like you do with Netflix.

sonicjam4697d ago

The PS4 has the power to perfectly emulate the PS1 and PS2 they don't need to stream it. They can just resale you the games at a cheaper price and pop in an emulator.

McScroggz4697d ago

Because there isn't a difference in digital copies and physical copies other than the method of delivery. Is this really a question?

wishingW3L4697d ago

of-course there is a difference! You can buy Persona 3 digitally on the PS3 but you can't play it from the PS2 disc.

Lunarassassin4696d ago

Unless you have the backwards compatable ps3. But most don't.

DirtyMagician4697d ago

Wow this guy wasted a couple of hours of his life over this pointless article. Not to mention the people who approved this...

strigoi8144697d ago

I just hope there is an option where we be able to load the disc then give them codes then lets us download or play it thru gaikkai

nick3094697d ago

Sony like all other companies want every consumer to pay twice to have bc for a game.otherwise they wouldve done that.

Death4697d ago

It would be absurd to think the PS4 with it's PC architecture would be compatable with the PowerPC based PS3 games. Risc and x86 have never been friends.

I would love to know why the current PS3 can play a digital version of a PS2 game and not a physical copy. Someone answer that one.

TheGrimReaper00114697d ago

the same reason for PS One games
the games they sell at the ps store are in emulator form and play via an emulator
the actual ps2 games still wouldnt work on a ps3, but when they figured out how to play a ps2 game via an emulator that actually works on ps3, its al now just putting those games on the store
you might be asking: "Why not just a firmware update with that ps2 emulator, so you can play all ps2 games?"
because money. they know people will buy this, again
i only have ps1 games downloaded of games i once owned or are broken. no way im paying 10 dollars for a game i already own

HiddenMission4697d ago

that's not true at all PS2's always played PS1 games because the disc format and the reader being acceptable CD...

as far as PS2 games on PS3 like I said below early versions of the console came with an additional hardware chip set thus allowing original PS2 games to work. Once the chip set was removed Sony and other companies started releasing HD remakes which were coded and even tweaked for PS3 usage.

I hope this clears things up for everyone.

HiddenMission4697d ago

Because the digital re-releases are actually HD remakes and they were recoded for the PS3 that would be why. The original PS2 disks require access to the cell processor and emotion chip which do not exist in later versions of the PS3 thus making them not functional on the PS3's without the chips. I hope this helps.

Roper3164697d ago

because all the rendering is done on the server and the only thing the console needs to do is receive the decoded digital stream from the server. Just like watching Netflix.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose21d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE21d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername20d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy21d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde21d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8621d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8621d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300021d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
