Xbox One Is Already Playing Catch-Up

When Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) introduced the Xbox One, the features it touted seemed completely misaligned with its core gamer customers. Sony (NYSE: SNE), however, struck hard and aimed its new PlayStation 4 squarely at hard-core gamers. Microsoft is already in catch-up mode.

Oh, and it will be for the entirety of the eighth generation of consoles.

Your first impression is your lasting one, and Microsoft's first impression was one that was completely hostile and indifferent to the gamer.

darthv724704d ago

first impressions are for dates and job interviews. consoles....not so much.

mewhy324704d ago

It's simple. If you want to play games get a PS4. If you want to skype and watch tv get xbone. Oh and also if you don't care to have a spy camera in your living room get an xbone. I'm a hardcore gamer. PS4 for real gamers xbone for micro$oft sheep.

That's Just Complete Fanboy Talk! Both console's are for gaming the both have their own damn feature's.

Are you saying people don't remember 599 US dollars, Giant Enemy Crab, and "get a second job"?

Are you saying the first three months didn't give PS3 a reputation of "no gamez lol!", a reputation that took years to shake off?

darthv724704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

No. you are the one saying that.

I dont hold grudges over things that are deemed petty (to me). Those things with the ps3 were petty. It may put some people off but not forever especially when things changed and so did peoples reception to the system.

You can dwell on the past issues if you like. surprised you didnt go back further to the DRE on the PS2 or having to flip the PS1 over to make it play games.

I dont dwell on the past. I enjoy the games of the past but I dont dwell on the negative things because there are way more positives in gaming than negatives.

MWong4704d ago

@ darthv72

I would normally agree with you, but I think M$ has left a pretty bad taste and unsettling feeling in it's consumer base for this next generation. Hopefully, they can change that image.

"Are you saying people don't remember 599 US dollars, Giant Enemy Crab, and "get a second job"?

Nobody thinks about those things when buying a PS3 now. People considers the now when making a purchasing decision, not what was!

For instance, nobody thinks about the hacking incident anymore and PS+ is praised liked the second coming of Christ.

PS4 for Real gamers?

First of all "Real Gamers" play on their PCs.

Consoles are designed to be an enteratinment system, that's why the X1 won me over.

My PC and Xbox One will dominate for me.

lol calls himself a hardcore gamer, says "PS4 for real gamers". Don't make me laugh kid, back of the line.

The_Con-Sept4703d ago

For nuketail : dude... When Xbox went down you got undertow. When psn went down with a possible leak of old information? We got bunch of free games.

When your account is banned from xbl because a moderator thought that you were a cheater on call of duty.... You had the hardest time getting your account back. If the same happens on PSN it gets only temporarily banned unless you are malicious.

When your Xbox controller runs out of juice its time to hit the store for more batteries. It's 2013 dude....

Finally if you expect anything from Microsoft you shouldn't. Meanwhile PlayStation be listening to its secret underground members like me. Everything that everyone including I have posted in their discussions has come true with the PS4.

MysticStrummer4703d ago

@Opie - You sound just as ignorant saying real gamers are PC gamers. A real gamer can game on all platforms or only one at a time, and that one doesn't have to be PC. Get out of line and wait to be called, kid.

dantesparda4703d ago

Aint no "real gamer" gonna say that the x1 is for real gaming, cuz if thats so, then the wii is/was for real gamers too. This Opie guy (btw your name fits you, cuz i associate "opies" with "dopie") is a fake if you ask me, just another MS fanboy

What?

I have never gotten banned on XBL, have you? You seem like the type, but fyi you only get permanent bad for serious offenses.

Don't kjnow how that is relevant though?

"When your Xbox controller runs out of juice its time to hit the store for more batteries. It's 2013 dude.... "

Completely irrelevant, but when your battery runs out you are tethered to your console with a 6 ft cord like it is iu 1999.

I will just swap in a new set of fresh recharged batteries.

"Finally if you expect anything from Microsoft you shouldn't. "

Nope, that would be you expecting somethng from your favorite company like all fangirls do.

I don't, I take what I like and ignore what I don't. Applies to all company's.

"Meanwhile PlayStation be listening to its secret underground members like me. Everything that everyone including I have posted in their discussions has come true with the PS4."

Yup, Sony has been watching all your wet dreams about the PS4 and made it true. Everything you ever wanted is there.

It's amazing, Sony is completely selfless and is turning into a gamers charity. You go girl. Sony's got your back!!!

Catch up? lol... because of some pre-launch noise?

Typical Playstation "enthusiast" perspective. Dwelling on non-issues.

IMO, the only important game of "catch-up" being played atm is PSN trying to match XBL.

PSN will be roughly equivalent to XBL on the Xbox360, where as MS is pulling out all the stops for Xbox Live on Xbox One.

On top of their in-house, world-class cloud infrastructure, their offerings in terms of services are unmatched. Add that to amazing features like smartmatch, instant switching, and multiple inputs (in the form of Kinect and Smartglass) and you have what is set to be the most robust & well supported online console gaming service in the long, drawn out history of humanity!!!!!

And that, friends, is going to bring about a whole next level of gaming experiences... Which is whats important.

I kid you not.

I kept waiting for the sarcasm tag but I never saw it. I gotta say, at least you're passionate about it. You've got a future in sales or marketing and that's not an insult.

malokevi4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

Thanks! I try to articulate myself as clearly and concisely as possible.

Definitely passionate... my gaming experience is part and parcel with Xbox Live. Ever since beta testing the service in 2001, it has been fundamental to my gaming experience. I watched it grow from a wee lad to the leviathan service that's set to land in November.

12 years of refinement and I can hardly recognize it any more! To say I'm passionate may be an understatement :D

Most importantly, Microsoft's passion for its baby makes my passion look pitiful. Online console gaming is their herd, and they are its shepherd.

/s? I get the feeling some people aren't going to enjoy reading that, lol.

Imalwaysright4704d ago

You mean the same pre-launch noise that forced MS to bendover and change their draconian policies? MS will play catch up this gen and they can only blame themselves and their arrogance for it.

Also what will bring "whole next level of gaming experiences" are developers, you know, the people that make games and in that department MS is definitely lacking when compared to both Nintendo and Sony. Have fun with your clouds and input methods. To me is all about the games and I know that both Nintendo and Sony will deliver in that department on a level that MS can only dream about.

malokevi4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

"You mean the same pre-launch noise that forced MS to bendover and change their draconian policies?"

Thats exactly what I mean.

"people that make games and in that department MS is definitely lacking"

I would beg to differ. IMO, the games announced for XB1 are more interesting than those announced for PS4... not that I won't have both by the end of the holiday.

I love MS' first-party exclusives. Namely, I love the Halo series. Not to mention the other great titles coming down the pipes: Sunset Overdrive, Forza, Titanfall, KI, DR3, Spark, PVZ... all the great multiplat titles, and a slew of to-be-announced titles.

As far as games go, I'm not even remotely worried!

And... really? You're actually going to say that Nintendo has a chance at competing with MS. Have you considered that Activision, EA, and Ubisoft are all rapidly abandoning the console because it isn't profitable?

Sure, Nintendo will have its first party titles. But thats about it. Its a fantastic platform, and Nintendo has the most recognized brands in all of gaming, but as far as "experiences" go, if you're going to hold Nintendo up against Microsoft... well, that's very telling.

I think all 3 consoles will be spectacular. I think PS4 will have the best exclusives/single player, I think MS will have the best online service/multiplayer, and I think Nintendo will do what Nintendo always does best: Mario, Smash, Zelda, and Pokemon... all those things that serve so well to evoke our childish nostalgia.

Which is why I will have all three consoles when everything is said and done. But, that being said, I love the Xbox brand, and am in no way reluctant to throw them a bone when they deserve it... in spite of how many dislikes I get.

:)

Imalwaysright4704d ago

I'm not talking about launch games I'm talking about 1st party developers and in that department MS is definetely lacking when compared to both Sony and Nintendo. No doubt about it.

Also I'm not talking about third party support on the Wii U or how much the Wi U will sell compared to the X1. My comment was a reaction to your absurd statement that the clouds will bring next gen experiences. Its ALL about the devs and in that department MS is severely lacking when compared to Nintendo. Not even close.

malokevi4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

Alright... but MS has spent over 1b investing in games, and has a ton of studios (including their own studios) working on exclusive games for the Xbox One, and leveraging the cloud.

I don't understand why you're so quick to dismiss something with such exciting prospects? Is that cynicism?

I guess I just don't understand what you're trying to say. I see plenty of studios talking about XB1, talking about games, and talking about how the cloud can be used. And thats just what's being talked about in interviews... never mind the stuff that MS is working on behind closed doors.

You can rest assured, we haven't seen everything yet. To pretend like we have is absurd. Just another excuse to downplay what is set to be an awesome console with an amazing online service and great games.

A pessimistic perspective which I cannot for the life of my understand. Nor do I care to. Because, at the end of the day, my enjoyment is guaranteed... which is all that matters to me.

Imalwaysright4704d ago

Oh boy the clouds again. Quality of games depends on one thing alone: talent. Its not about money or the clouds. Its all about talent and creativity.

Also I see the cloud as an excuse to implement DRM and I've yet to see with my eyes the benefits of the cloud because all I see is devs talking about it. Talk is cheap.

The only clouds i need right now are the ones that I can find in the sky because its 41ºC here and Im melting.

dantesparda4703d ago

Yup, its official, Malokevi took his head out of MS' @$$ and now has it in "the clouds".

Thats some serious fanboyism going on right there, you should have that professionally looked at. Look people, its ok, to like a system and like the company that made it, but dont act like you're in love with the company, thats not normal, its pathetic!

HammadTheBeast4704d ago

Don't forget PS3 failing at E3 then beating 360.

PunisherRevenge4704d ago

@HammadTheBeast....lol are you serious? For one the actual numbers for the PS3 are unknown because Sony keep on combining Ps2 and PS3 numbers together so for all we know the X360 could still be ahead. Plus why would anyone be proud to come in at number two? The way is see it Nintendo won last gen if you wanna talk numbers and since Sony nor Microsoft came in at #1 they both lost.

Saigon4704d ago

Just wondering; thought about this once I saw this article. Did MS ever explain or say if we can just connect the Xbone directly to the TV. In other words do we need a cable connection or can it work alone. I am sure I answered my question already but I just want to know if it has been officially stated.

malokevi4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

You need a cable connection for the TV features. But, no, you don't necessarily need cable. XB1 will hook up to any TV via HDMI, I think.

As far as whether or not you need a "cable box"... I have heard some noise that MS might have a slot on the box to insert a cable card... rendering the DVR box unnecessary.

Not even remotely confirmed, but I'm really hoping its true.

n4rc4704d ago

No.. You don't need cable..

It connects to your TV just as consoles do now.. But on top of the hdmi-out, there is an additional hdmi-in port..

You can plug in your cable box..or not use it at all.. From how I understand the tech, there is nothing stopping you from using your laptop or even 360 via HDMI with the one rather then just a cable box

ps3_pwns4704d ago

yep xbox one is playing catch up but it will never catch up. sadly some fanboys will blindly follow the xbox one to its grave even though don mattrick its captain already jumped ship because he is smart.

PunisherRevenge4704d ago

@iron_spider...lol exactly. All of these Sony fans keep on whining about how the X360 go a one year lead. I remember back before the PS3 can out all I saw was doom articles for the X360 saying that once the PS3 hit its going to crush it. Fast forward 7 years later and look what happened. It took Sony 7 times (7 years) as long just to get close. But like you said this is N4G....lol

avengers19784704d ago

But PS3 did catch 360 and surpass it, that's with the 360 selling for a year longer than PS3... In some places 18 months longer.

@iron_spider - PS3 passed 360 so what's your point, exactly?

"While Microsoft can handle a few hard knocks, the wounds it is licking right now are self inflicted. That could be good for long-term investors willing to look past the near-term problems.

However, coupled with the “start” button issue, it is starting to look like Microsoft isn't reading its customers very well."

This could've all been avoided by focusing on gaming first, and all other aspects second. Well that and not treating gamers like convicts. Furthermore, the fact that this thing is $100 more and weaker than the PS4 is obviously a glaring difference that the author didn't know about or decided to omit. It will be interesting to say the least, to see how MS combats these problems going forward.

Lvl_up_gamer4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

The writer's opening argument "Xbox One Is Already Playing Catch-Up" is not supported within the context of his article.

There is NOTHING within the article that remotely indicates MS is playing "catch-up". All the writer does is point out the issues with MS's PR and MS's initial pre and post policies. This is NOT playing "catch up" in any means.

Playing catch up in terms of consoles is directly implied to what each company is trying to offer the consumer with features for the product that the other competitor has yet to see the benefits of having are.

ie. Sony was playing catch up with their online services competing against XBL. Now, we see Sony with many of the same features going into next gen as well as a paid subscription to play online.

As far as I can see, going into next gen, the PS4 isn't bringing any kind of features that set's itself apart from Nintendo's WiiU or MS's XB1.

Granted the PS4 may be the strongest of the 3 on paper, but when we look at what MS is trying to do going into next gen....it's clear it's MS that is spearheading the future. MS's strong push for cloud computing is unrivaled in terms of dev support. XB1 is now going to be partnered with your cable box eliminating the multiple amount of remotes on your tv room table and changing the way you use your TV WHICH is the most used entertainment device in the home. I know I use my TV 100% of the time when either watching TV or gaming. I am also watching TV 80% MORE then I am gaming since there is more then 1 person that lives in my home.

This article is just another anti-MS article. Just another wash rinse and repeat. Yawn, when will actual gaming journalism grow up?

kayoss4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

Maybe you need to do some more research on cloud computing. Like you say it is for the future and currently the future is not here yet. Cloud Computing requires a large bandwidth, something that 75% of the people in the united States do not have yet. In order for for games to use cloud computing on the fly you need a bandwidth of 50mb/s or more with no issues. Look it up, there have been lots of research into this.
What would you expect people who dont have that type of bandwidth to do?
Ill give you a scenario, let say developers decided that they will use cloud computing for Xbox one games. They release the games and find out that the majority of the people who bought the game cant really play the game due to their lack of bandwidth. Developers will realize this and soon abandone cloud computing.
I agree cloud computing is the future but we are no where near that yet.

FrigidDARKNESS4704d ago

I dont think bandwidth will be an issue. The xbox one hardware will be finalised next month at the HotChips Symposium Aug 27. The Gpu will be custom based off next gen Radeon cards GCN 2.0

MWong4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

Bandwidth will always be an issue with cloud computing. That is until we have the proper infrastructure to make it work properly. The problem with cloud computing also is you're still now going to require a gamer to get an internet connection to get the best out of any game.

Yetter4703d ago

Actually there are lots of things that can be done in the cloud that are not latency sensitive. Particle effects like smoke and fog for example as they do not need to be 'synched' to the players action. Some real world physics like water animations or wind animation for the same reason as I stated above. Not to mention the promise of persistent living worlds that continue to live in the cloud even when the player isn't around. Also I think you are underestimating how big of a deal it is to be able to offer worldwide dedicated servers for a reasonable price to your devs. If you really want to learn more about what cloud computing can accomplish today check out this article.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

MysticStrummer4703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

@Frigid - Bandwidth has nothing at all to do with the hardware in the console. It has to do with people's individual internet connections. In the US, the average connection will allow 1/20000 of the data to be processed by the cloud as can be done by the internal systems of the console.

@Yetter - You might want to read that article a little more closely. It explains very well why cloud computing is a fantasy for now.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose27d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE27d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername26d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy27d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde27d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8627d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8627d ago (Edited 27d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
