Does Nintendo need new IP?

Although E3 was predominantly seen as a battle between Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo still had plenty of work to do in creating some momentum for the Wii U, and maintaining it for the 3DS.

Their software line-up ticked all the main boxes and hands-on reports were largely positive. Nonetheless there was tinge of disappointment, with a vocal part of the community bemoaning the lack of any new IP. Nintendo were accused of shovelling up the same old franchises, releasing the same games again and again. But is this criticism fair and does Nintendo really need new IP?

Nintendo needs newer and broader IP's. They need to be seen as a company that makes more than just Mario, Zelda etc And whoever says otherwise would be simply lying to themselves. ;)

grailly4735d ago

I'm sure they can do fine without new ip, but I really want new IP from them

PopRocks3594735d ago

"And whoever says otherwise would be simply lying to themselves. ;)"

Really. Last time I checked they were also bringing out Pikmin 3 (an IP not touched for a decade) and The Wonderful 101.

But I'm guessing those just don't count, right?

grailly4735d ago

@poprock
no, a game that has 3 at the end does not count as new IP -_-'

I guess we could count the wonderful 101, but we were kinda talking 1st party games.

wampdog294735d ago (Edited 4735d ago )

Crashmo/Pushmo and Dillon's Rolling Western and its sequal don't count I guess...

Wonderful 101 may not be developed by Nintendo, but it is being published by Nintendo and will stay an exclusive because they are helping to fund it. How is this any different than say Mario Golf that isn't actually developed internally at Nintendo either, but is obviously a NIntendo IP....

Steel Diver and its future free-to-play additions is new as well. Just because you don't like a game, doesn't mean it gets stricken from the record.

They should make one new IP per gen and push it.

GCN seemed to have Pikmin which had 2 games

Wii had....Wii Fit..which also had two games.

I wonder what the Wiiu will have?

jcnba284735d ago

Nope. Nintendo has more IPs than any other game company. What I would like to see is Nintendo use more of them instead of the main ones like Mario and Zelda. New entries from franchises like StarFox, F-Zero and Fatal Frame would be great.

Smoovekid4735d ago

I do not think they own fatal frame, I may be wrong.

quantae064735d ago

They now own the Fatal Frame series.

ThePsychoGamer4735d ago

They own partial rights to the series (which as far as I can tell just means they own the Spirit Camera spin off series), but not the whole series, Good thing too, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten the original trilogy on PSN.

Dj7FairyTail4735d ago (Edited 4735d ago )

@ThePsychoGamer

Nope Fatal Frame IV is published by Nintendo on Nintendo Wii. Japan Only

ThePsychoGamer4735d ago (Edited 4735d ago )

@Dj7FairyTail

Fatal Frame IV, and the remake of 2 were both part of a deal between Nintendo and Tecmo, The fact that Nintedo published, one of these games really doesn't prove anything.

As I said before, the fact that Fatal Frame 1 and 2 were both released on the PSN earlier this year proves Nintendo doesn't have full rights to the series.

Sony's IP's:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Nintendo's IPs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Sony has WAY more franchises WAY more then Nintendo, you have no idea what you're talking about.

edit: wrong link sorry, http://nintendo.wikia.com/w...

that for Nintendo frachises

so It says Sony: 90 franchises, Nintendo: 75 franchies

xbox and ps too. although one likes a game series, also companies must have new ideas that deliver different franchises to not fall into a single category. :3

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

Nintendo filed a lawsuit in the United States Court of International Trade.

Nintendo of America is suing the United States government over the sweeping tariffs President Donald Trump put in place last year, according to a complaint filed Friday in the U.S. Court of International Trade and obtained by Aftermath.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure95d ago (Edited 95d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer96d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot96d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box95d ago (Edited 95d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno96d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay96d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno94d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK95d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
