Why Stealth Games Are Awesome

MasonicGamer.com: I love stealth games, for so many reasons, but I know a lot of people find them dull and frustrating. Stealth games may never be the biggest sellers, even when they’re met with universal acclaim. Dishonored sold around 420,000 copies in it’s first month in the United States, whilst CoD Black Ops II sold 7.5 million copies. That statistic could do with a little more context. I chose it to highlight the big difference between, what I consider to be, a wonderfully created game and just another click-on-a-man-until-he-falls- over-athon. Games with a big emphasis on stealth do sell well; Far Cry 3, a critically acclaimed blend of action and stealth, has recently passed the 6 million sales mark, according to Ubisoft.

I love stealth games, And I am still waiting for another Tenchu game!

ThanatosDMC4725d ago

One thing i learned from Tenchu is that 1 poisoned riceball is enough to kill EVERYBODY.

Also, that people must be hungry as *uck in Tenchu games.

TechnicianTed4725d ago

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is the best stealth game ever made. Which is why every Splinter Cell game released after is a slap in the face to what made it great.

@ your below post

ERRYBAHDEH!

lol I'm agreeing that Conviction wasn't very stealthy at all while showing my admiration for the only titles.

TechnicianTed4725d ago

Ahh..wasn't sure what you meant since you said I must disagree lol.

HIGH FIVE!

Lord_Sloth4725d ago

While this made me laugh I must disagree since Splinter Cell was an AMAZING stealth game prior to Conviction. Didn't particularly care for Double Agent either...But still.

TechnicianTed4725d ago

Who are you disagreeing with?

roland824725d ago

Chaos theory is awesome but I still enjoyed double agent and conviction.

TechnicianTed4725d ago (Edited 4725d ago )

I've been playing Conviction lately, now that I can actually play it properly (it ran like crap before on my other system) and while I think it is a decent game, the options for stealth are not as numerous as in Chaos Theory and the games before it.

You are pretty much forced to use, ahem, force as the focus seems to be placed on taking out enemies rather than finding ways to subdue them or get around them. It's not a bad game, but it's a bad Splinter Cell.

And Double Agent for me is an abomination, running it on pc finds me at the BSOD more often than not. I never got further than the prison on that, even though I tried, the game was insistent on crashing my system.

Confickercrash4725d ago

Dishonored is possibly the most underrated game of this gen.

vickers5004725d ago

I wouldn't say that. The gameplay was awesome, but the moral choice system in the game was one of the worst I've ever seen in a game.

"..Why Stealth Games Are Awesome"

I agree, but the examples given, Dishonored and CoD Black Ops II, are ill-chosen examples IMHO, considering they're FPS games and stealth games need to be 3rd person so you can move freely the camera around you and see how exactly your character is positioned in his surrounding, just how close the enemies are, if you're properly hidden in the shadows, bushes, etc.
So I'd rather name IPs like Metal Gear, Splinter Cell and Hitman (feel free to add others if you know any good). Assassin's Creed, though it's often refered to as being part of this category, is not. The AC games don't have any gameplay elements pertaining to this particular genre. Great games , just not stealth at all.

That said, it's a shamefully under-represented genre in the gaming industry. Here's hoping the next-gen of consoles will offer more of them, ideally blending in open world with stealth cause, the very meagre attempts at doing that (Far Cry 2...) haven't been concluding to say the least.

vickers5004725d ago

Dishonored is a game that heavily encourages stealth and many elements of the game are built around stealth, so I gotta disagree with you on that part.

But my favorite stealth game has to be Deus Ex Human Revolution.

One of my biggest art heroes. His work and vision were truly one of a kind, and he’s been a huge inspiration to my own work. Such a heartbreaking loss.

Deeeeznuuuts466d ago

Remember seeing Dishonored for the first time when it released, fell in love with the art style straight away, so striking! And because of it, still holds up and will for years to come, RIP Viktor

JEECE466d ago

Yep I remember seeing some of the earliest concept art for Dishonored and hearing that the art director of Half-Life 2 was working on it and being excited.

And you are absolutely right, each of those games (HL2 and Dishonored) has a distinct art style that stands the test of time.

Relientk77466d ago

So sad to hear this. I absolutely love the Dishonored series and love the world and art style. It looks great and unique. I'm still hoping for a Dishonored 3

rokos466d ago

RIP Viktor love your work

Ethereal466d ago

Damn... Dishonored has such amazing art. RIP.

Arkane Co-Founder Says Dishonored and Prey Fans 'Will Be Happy' With His Next Game

WolfEye Studios president and co-founder of Arkane Studios Raphaël Colantonio has said Dishonored and Prey fans “will be happy” with his new studio's next game.

Marcus Fenix660d ago

Can’t wait to see what they’re working on

Relientk77660d ago

If it's something like Dishonored, then I am totally here for it.

TheNamelessOne659d ago

Let's hope. Their first game, Weird West, really wasn't my thing.

Miacosa659d ago

Ouch, already placing a sales cap on this is potentially bad as these games never seem to sell all too well. Hopefully the budget is in check so no one gets laid off after launch.

Psychonaut85659d ago

Fuck yeah. Even if it’s just a spiritual successor I want more titles like Dishonored in terms of art style, design and gameplay
