It is pretty sad that a game that can sell 3+million copies is deemed to be a failure due to the cost of marketing and development. TombRaider was an absolutely incredible gaming experience and a critical success in every way BUT, it "only sold 4 million copies" so...FAIL! Totally sucks.

I have never seen anyone so dedicated in pissing off the people who provided his livelihood. Not only that, if he's "retired" it means that he is not actively working in the industry right now, so he can just shut the f*ck up about the direction of the industry, considering he doesn't have the insider view anymore.

If I wanted an honest opinion on where the industry is going, I'd ask the indie developers. THOSE guys are the ones who can give us the best view of what direction gaming is taking, both because of their position in the industry and because of their more direct contact with the fans.

I used to look up to cliffy as I'm a fellow dev and now all I see is someone that is looking for attention and a little press to, so what if he's been around for awhile and helped create the best game engine... He retired and somewhat disowned he gears franchise and now he's hating on the new consoles because of what, no DRM and the used game policy seriously you can't stop used games this early in the industry's life cycle that's something that's going to fix itself in due time you can't force it maybe nudge people into that direction but more and more people are buying their games from the consoles stores instead of going to their local shop why ? Run animations are horrible
Graphics are okish in places
Gears 2 was boring and mp was shite.

It's an overrated series, which was given most attention due to the fact the 360 had nothing that stood out and the blood and gore did that

I doubt most people actually read the entire blog. I'll be the first to say that his tweets and internet ramblings have been somewhat annoying, and I never thought I'd come to this guys defense. Having said that this blog post is frreakin spot on. I remember being at the Gears 3 midnight launch and getting the leaflet that was already advertising trading the game in for $35.00, an hour before the damn thing even released. Used games are important, but places like Gamestop DO put a lot of developers out of business. I actually quite like his idea of trading digital games in and using a netflix like server. Guy made some pretty valid points. Props to you Cliffy B.

Here's the thing. Cliffy makes some good points when he states that there needs to be incentives for consumers to go digital, such as sales, and the ability to trade in digital in some way, but I feel like he's been in the far end of the successful spectrum for so long, that when he sees studios closing down he's envisioning what went behind the scenes in his own production crews. Many of these companies are just making terrible business choices. Square for example has recently put out a lot of amazing games, but in between that time, a lot of shovelware as well. Spent countless dollars on marketing and advertising games that no one really wanted any time soon (ff13-2 and 3 anyone?). Gamers will speak with their wallets, and if you make a game fun, people will buy it. Don't spend more money than you need to, and find ways to incentivize digital purchases, and you will have a much stronger industry. My vote is on discounted downloadable games. I'd happily drop $40 on a new game to have it only digital, and be able to play it instantly while it downloads via PS4.

Cliff made some very valid points in the article and I agree with his assessment of this broken industry. GameStop needs to go!! People are quick to blame Sony or MS or publishers/Devs for recent problems yet GameStop is just as guilty if not more so.

People like him have been trying to write off and perdict the death of consoles ever since the early 80s, but it is the comsuer who will decide, not elites like him. I hate pc gaming alway have, steam my hold great value for gamers but me I still have a pc I bought back in 2003 that work great for it need it to do, surfing email pay bills in fact my smart phone does even more, but to get another PC just to play games and having to upgrade every couple years just to play the latest great PC game is nuts, my ps2 is still running after 10 yrs my ps3 still running after 6 yrs. new ps4 will have a shelf life of 10+ yrs much cheaper that a new pc or upgrades every two yrs. so you can perdict all digital long term just like people who perdict the end of landline phones but it will be the gamers to decide.

I love how he even acknowledges that the used game industry is capitalism. Well, guess what? Using capitalism, those developers could easily one-up GameStop and other used game businesses by offering an incentive for gamers to skip GS and go back to the dev. The devs could easily offer money, just like GS, or even offer other incentives like discounts on other games they've made or games associated with the publisher. There are many ways the devs/publishers could get the consumer to do business with them over used game stores. The fact of the matter is that they are too stupid to do it. It's basic business 101.

Let's say you live in a neighborhood with a bunch of restaurants and none of them are Italian. One day, someone decides to open an Italian restaurant and it is wildly successful to the point that it starts taking away a large chunk of the business of the other restaurants. The other restaurants decide that it's not fair and want them shut down.

Sounds pretty stupid, doesn't it? That essentially what's going on with games as well. GameStop and other used game companies saw a hole in the market and decided to capitalize on it. Using the example, those other restaurants should try improving their food and give customers an incentive to go back to them. Just like devs/publishers should try improving their products and giving the consumer an incentive to come back.

Why the hell should someone be punished for finding a hole in the market? That basic business and basic capitalism. If they don't like it then do something about it. Don't cry and try and rig the system so only you can win. Rigging the system just ends up hurting the consumers in the long run.

Before you call EA , MS , other publishers GREEDY, think about yourself, consumers.

It's not the used game's market that are closing the doors on developers.That keeps the market strong to trade in towards new games.The main reason is CEOs getting paid up to 64.9 million a year and a game developer getting paid outrages money.Ring a bell cliffy?I believe the developer should get paid for their work but you people are taking it to far.Cut CEOs pay by 80% and watch the gaming market be just fine again and stop paying some developers millions for a game.The problem with the gaming market is greed.It got to big and made way to much money way to fast.Now the companys want to bleed the gamer dry.So cliffy take your millions that you made off a game that you hate now and go away and shut the hell up

Given how much it costs to make games and how long that takes, getting the games into the most gamers hands is not only best for all gamers, but studios and the industry.
