What should Microsoft do about Xbox One DRM?

Coming out of E3, Don Mattrick and Microsoft have been feeling gamers' scorn. GamesIndustry's panel steps into the exec's shoes and offers advice on what to do next

I think this has just been confirmed by MS themselves. I'll try to find the link.

Congratulation to all those console owners that constantly put pressure on MS to change their policies. You should be proud of yourself. To those that didn't ... You're welcome.

AngelicIceDiamond4772d ago

What about game sharing and cloud to make games better. My only concerns.

GribbleGrunger4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Yes, of course this will mean they'll have to drop the whole cloud computing argument. Without an internet connection, it's impossible to mandate.

user55757084772d ago

my thing is that wouldn't they have to redo the hardware model? because if a disc can install the game and not be needed anymore cant people just install once and give to a friend to install for free if theres not going to be an online check every 24 hours?

darthv724772d ago

may be axed but they can still do the cloud thing. I mean think about it. There will likely be more people who connect their console than not.

Even sony knows how many connected consoles there are and are banking on the possibility there will be even more this gen than last.

It may not be mandatory anymore but that doesnt mean people wont connect to the internet. If you have internet, chances are your console will as well. My internet compliant consoles are always connected and ready when i want to go online.

bummed about the family share thing but the overall change in their policy is a win.

MAJ0R4772d ago

This is a huge win for gamers.

HammadTheBeast4772d ago

Family sharing plan has been axed.

creatchee4772d ago

The Family Group as we know it is most likely dead. I hope the cloud initiative is not. Perhaps they can sell"internet required" games?

Also, you have to appreciate the irony. A large portion of the vocal opposition were Sony fanboys. They helped this happen and now will have to deal with the One selling more than it would have. They never assumed Microsoft would pull a 180 and will now have to return to whining about Kinect and teraflops again. Careful what you wish for lol

GameCents4772d ago

I don't see why the cloud features should fall by the wayside, obviously some games have been designed to require a constant connection and those games will benefit from being always connected.
This is evident in their previous DRM policy since you only had to log in one every 24 hours. By that I mean if offline play was possible even then, then obviously cloud computing was always meant to be an auxiliary feature for most games and not a mandatory one.

darthv724772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

that pretty much sums up the entire library for both the ps4 and xb1. no doubt this gen will be more online focused than last.

Ms will have their gold service for all things online (apps and multiplayer). sony has their PS+ for 'most' things online (multiplayer).

there will be those games that have a more single player aspect but we all know there will be more push for multiplayer or some type of online component with each game this gen.

Last gen, online was a secondary component to the majority of games unless the game was online multiplayer only. this time around will be more about being online than off.

Especially when both the ps4 and xb1 selling points are about the social integration of the platforms and the people that others play with/against.

MestreRothN4G4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Games can require mandatory internet, even today. Think about it as MMOs or online-only games work. So the cloud can surely be used if devs want, but internet obviously will be needed.

About the sharing, it will be done through disks. Confirmed on their press release.

It doesnt matter if they announced this.Im sorry but all the crap they pulled and all of a sudden they decide where going to backpedal like that tells me that they did this because preorders where terrible, but mark my words now they will have some stipulation down the road witht the xboxone.A company doesnt just fold there crads like that withought some reason that we dont know about. They where also saying that MS did this to boost preorders as well so another sign that MS isnt to be trusted. If you guys go back to MS after all the shit they pulled and said then your only asking to get burned in the end.Give it time you will see.

UNGR4772d ago

Microsoft turns around and does something good and people still find a way to complain. SMH fanboys...

finbars754772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Turn what around? The fact that they shit in the gamers face and there preorders where terrible so they decide to dig themselves out of hole. They did it for themselves not for the gamers.Thye would have lost billions and.The fact that people like UNGR are so blindsided by this news tells me that your putting your faith in MS hands down the road to god knows what they will do next.Theres a difference between giving credit where credit is due and giving credit to compant that is just grabbing for dear life to keep there fanbase alive.Damage has been done and this proves nothing.Gamers stand tall but MS are the ones with the string attached to you like puppets by playing this off like a mistake , we clearly know what they where up to.Like I said before you never know what there up to but in time you will see.

HammadTheBeast4772d ago

^

Still plenty of BS to walk through. You guys are pathetic. First supporting DRM/No used games, now all happy its gone.

BlackTar1874772d ago

UNGR,

It would be easier to swallow if they didn't have all these people tell us how this is needed and benficial and its the future and its what we want.

also the line 2 days ago about xbox sticking to its policies is a load of BS now.

This is not a trust worthy company way to work. I mean you can word it or take it however you want but it is not a good sign to tell your consumers one thing then be like HA JK .

rainslacker4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

It's a step in the right direction. I've hated on MS because of their policies, but isn't this what we wanted to happen? I don't believe you can have it both ways. You either want them to change or you don't. Gamers flexed their voices and their wallets, and it affected change. This is the first time in my over 30 years of gaming where I've seen a company change it's policies so drastically due to user base feedback.

Your choice to buy one is still up to you, but if they decide to change things in the future, we now have evidence that we can affect change. If they decide to change things in the future, it'll likely be choice based, and allow the consumer to ease into it at their own discretion...you know...the way it should have been from the beginning.

Really the only thing left now is to see if there is some kind of Astrix mark to the new policies.

Other than that, yeah I agree that they handled everything poorly. The complete disregard of the consumer, and arrogance on their part is bad, and they should be held accountable.

@GamersRulz below

The preorder numbers and the pressure from consumers are intrinsically linked.

GamersRulz4772d ago

I think pre-orders numbers that actually put a pressure on MS, they don't give a $hit about consumers! I couldn't believe people who kept defending this DRM BS.

Now its a level play field, next gen just got interesting!

Gamers 1 Dirty corporate shenanigans 0

GribbleGrunger4772d ago

Cheers. I was too late to edit my post.

pompombrum4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Wow.. if they do a reversal it will leave me in a very difficult position. I'd want to preorder an Xbox One as an Xbox fan to acknowledge my happiness at them for their reversal but with such an arrogant stance initially, I have to admit I almost just want to keep giving them the middle finger. I guess I will base my decision on Kinect.. if they decide to ditch the mandatory kinect and offer a cheaper no kinect Xbox One, then I'll preorder.

Actually wait what.. you STILL need an internet connection to initially set it up.. F-A-I-L

rainslacker4772d ago

I think it's a step in the right direction. The needing an internet connection to start is a pain, but probably required for downloading the proper updates.

Anyhow, it does put the X1 back on my radar. I'll likely hold off now at launch until sometime next year. Not sure why, since I have the money saved up for it, but maybe I'm still a little put off by the attitudes of their executives since the reveal.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 4772d ago
Ray1864772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Haven't you heard? MS just cowed to the will of the gamers. I guess they received an accurate account of pre-orders and had to backtrack.

I still don't trust them though. What's to say they won't implement all of these requirements 1 year later.

GribbleGrunger4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Regardless, this is good news. Now the conversation can focus on what it should be focused on: Which console is more powerful and which console will have the most varied AAA games and features.

JoGam4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

At this point the conversations shouldn't be about what games are the better than the other. Because both systems will offer different types of awesome exclusives games. To say which is better is just stupid. Just enjoy the fact the we can continue gaming without those restrictions. No need to keep the war going. We as gamers should be celebrating together. Believe it or not, this is a victory like nothing else.

NateCole4772d ago

It crazy that we had to talk about used games as features to begin with. I hated it so much because we were losing power as each gen rolls. This gen its dlc.

nitrogav4772d ago

exactly what I was thinking . Sony could implement it too once they have got your money . It`s going to be interesting how it all pans out.

maniacmayhem4772d ago

Who knows maybe both companies will in the far future but for now it is plain and obvious that GAMERS at least console gamers are not ready to go all digital and be hampered with DRM nonsense.

Good job, and good job Sony. I give props more to Sony then the gamers. Them going on Fallon and sticking it to MS on national TV must have had the MS crew scrambling.

The only question now is which console to buy day one?

WiiU is a given....PS4 or X1?

cervantes994772d ago

As for which console to choose, if you have to choose only one, would depend on which games most interest you at launch.

PS4 has more power though from a hardware perspective if that matters to you.

Enjoy whatever machine you choose and game on!

4772d ago
maniacmayhem4772d ago

@manageri

No idea what you are talking about.

The message that was clearly sent to MS is that no one was going for all the restrictions and we will choose the other option if so.

MS listened to the criticism and their fan base and now the XboxWon is getting the rewards it deserves.

maniacmayhem4772d ago

I guess its time to fail all the DOOM X1 DRM stories that are flooding N4G.

On to the next doom and gloom sensational pieces.

Angerfist4772d ago

True :D Funny how just at the Minute the Article gets published here the Changes go public by MS.

Clarence4772d ago

You know the Xbox one was doomed. Why the hell do you think they changed their policies. They still have a console that cost $100 more. Plus they lied about how the cloud makes the Xbox 1 more powerful which is why you needed to always be online.

Nothing but lies from this company. Now it's all biting them in their a$$.

Who's to say that once you purchase the console they don't turn the DRM back on. I don't trust them.

maniacmayhem4772d ago

Who's to say that Sony won't turn on DRM for their console.

They changed their policies because no one was going for it as they shouldn't have. The cloud can still be used to make games more powerful, where has this changed? Games can still require an internet connection just like some games on the PS4.

The PS3 when launched was $100 dollars (more?) more, I doubt you were complaining back then.

But I really do expect some folks on here to still complain and find faults just for the sake of being a complete fanboy.

D-riders4772d ago

drop the price of games to 34.99-39.99
if not they can die off

Goldenarmz4772d ago

Im guessing that since they just completely nixed all their plans completely. Lowering the prices of games wasnt part of the plan. Otherwise they would have announced that games would no longer be 60 bucks but 29, 39, etc. But nope, they just completely re-did EVERYTHING.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio74d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing74d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit74d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing74d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay76d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn277d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn276d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown76d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay76d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay76d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac76d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger77d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300076d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde76d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde76d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_75d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
