CDP On Free Witcher DLC, Next-Gen DRM Concerns

Geralt’s hit the big time. He’s got his own open world, a handsomely haggard beard, and a simultaneous launch across multiple “next-gen” platforms. It’s the latter, however, that could spell his undoing – or at least make his witchy charms a lot less bewitching for a sizable portion of PC gamers. Console-makers, after all, aren’t too terribly fond of free updates, but CD Projekt’s modus operandi is handing them out like candy.

Confident, humble, generous, and dedicated.

How can you not love them? These DLC's could easily cost 20 bucks each due to the amount of content. CD PROJEKT RED, you guys are moving from strength to strength.

Full Respect

well said, i couldn't agree more. i said before that i have so much respect for these guys and got a bunch of dislikes so i decided to post this article instead and let people see for themselves.

"Having said all that, we of course have to count money,” he said. “We have a whole production team and production procedures. But at the end of the day, the game [counts] – and not the money."

xhi44595d ago

These guys!!

So pumped for this AND Cyberpunk, Witcher 3 looks amazing!!!

MadLad4595d ago (Edited 4595d ago )

Most respectable dev around.
Doesn't hurt that, if only two games, they do stellar work. Witcher 3 is my most anticipated title at the moment and I am more than excited to see more of Cyberpunk.

These guys, simply put, are so very yes.

CDP just keep giving away stuff for. In a couple of days a Witcher 2 mod will released and I'm excited over it. Why?

-It's a mod by CDP's own gameplay director.
-It's supposed to revamp the whole combat system.
-It's a mod instead of them calling it a DLC (while EA limited the Crysuit 2.0 controls exclusively for the 360 version of Crysis and Blizzard will give console gamers exclusively the direct control system for console versions of Diablo 3).

The Witcher 4, 5, and 6 Will Be Released Over a 6-Year Period

CD Projekt RED confirms The Witcher 4, 5, and 6 will be released over a 6-year period, promising shorter development cycles ahead.

thesoftware73046d ago

Unless these games are bite-sized, it's a disaster waiting to happen or a major over-promise. Based on the tech demo they showed off, to get anything near that fidelity, and assuming the world is larger, no way they're cranking out 3 games in 6 years, unless they have some super AI doing a ton of work.

VenomUK46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

This sounds like a good move to me; CD PROJEKT Red make the game engine once and craft the world and the full story, then for each of the next two chapters they spend two years on making the adventure. I wish Bethesda had done this with Skyrim so we had new adventures.

Remember, GTA III was released in 2001 with its sequel GTA: Vice City just one year later in 2002. And GTA: San Andreas in 2004. Same engine but tweaked for all the games and they are all time classics.

thesoftware73046d ago

Venom, I get that, but the world of game development has changed dramatically since GTA3 and SA...these games will be extremely similar to each other, short, or downgraded quality.

But maybe CD PROJEKT Red has the secret sauce...we will see.

Michiel198946d ago

mods literally solve all of that, thats why skyrim sold so well for god knows how many years. You can choose to add content, change the combat up completely, get a bunch of new spells, visually change whatever parts of the world you like you name it. Especially some of the overhauls I really enjoyed

thorstein45d ago

All this company does is lie.

I think their CEO might be a compulsive liar. The last interview I read of him he claimed they popularized/ created "Dark Fantasy" ignoring all super popular "Dark Fantasy" games already out.

LucasRuinedChildhood46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Depends. Technically, they could spend many years on The Witcher 4, upgrading everything and polishing a new gameplay system with the story all planned out with the tools to create new content all set up.

Then release The Witcher 5 three years later. Then release Witcher 6 three years later. They would be iterative sequels.

It would be a 6 year release schedule from the perspective of a player but could be 11+ years of development. Unreal Engine 5 does also make games easier to make even if it has issues.

But even if 6 years is possible, they're probably just saying nice stuff for investors. The Witcher 3 sold for so long that sequels releasing close to each other might need even make them more money.

Tapani45d ago

They could also finish The Witcher 4, and dedicate a polish/finalizing team for the last 12 months to it, while gaining an extra year towards the 5th game, and do the same for the 6th.

Michiel198946d ago

well they've probably set this up for a bunch of years. I would be surprised if by the time 4 releases they wouldn't already be mostly done with 5 and done a bunch of the legwork for 6 if they manage to pull this of. I'm extremely skeptical and also think they can't even be close to as large and content rich as w3.

OMGitzThatGuy46d ago

They’re just yappin to appease investors when they will be delayed a minimum of a year and half easily or will be alot smaller and reusing assets.

Rebel_Scum46d ago

Reusing assets is hardly a thing to complain about.

OMGitzThatGuy45d ago

If 3 games in a 6 year period feels the same then it would be a problem.

Profchaos46d ago

There's only one studio that really gets away with this and that's RGG but it's because their stories are so good their fans don't mind exploring the Same places over and over

Can cdpr do that I doubt it

jznrpg46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

It’s easy to say that but something is going to give unless they build up their studio to several massive teams and even then delays are likely. Either that or quality/size will be lesser.

Name Last Name46d ago

I assume this means they will build the world once and then just add story and minimal changes in the next two games.

ZycoFox46d ago

They might have a tool to help shape landscapes and areas faster, or with AI help included.

Shorter development time doesn't always mean less changes.

Games during the 64 days were made in 2-3 years tops, and look at Mario Kart World.. that was made in 8 years and while it has a decent track selection the open mode is basically a giant desert lacking content..

Long development time doesn't always mean lots of content.

franwex46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Will in be like a Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? Not necessarily a bad thing if done right.

Started and stopped playing this game twice. Couldn't get into it. Gave it a 3rd try after the expansion and big update. Spent 120 hours on that playthrough and is now one of my favorite games.

P_Bomb50d ago

Hey it happens. Sometimes it takes a bit for a game to click. The stars gotta align. I know it had its problems and controversies, but I had a good time. Double plat + DLC.

Putte50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Tried to play this game when it was supposedly fixed but just couldn't get it to it. Very boring world to explore. Very confusing UI and menu's. Easy to see that the game was one's broken.

neutralgamer199249d ago

I had similar experience. The UI and Menu just feel very clustered and mixed together. I tried to give it a real chance by playing for 10ish hours just couldn't get into it

Will try again hopefully it will click. For all the love it gets I just find it hard to believe I don't like it when I love there types of games (open world, shooter, RPG elements, story choices etc)

Notellin49d ago

I own it one three platforms and the game is just phenomenal now.

DivineHand12549d ago

I played it when it launched on ps5. I did every single side quest and did my playthrough as a net runner. I really should do another playthrough and do the dlc but I want to do this in VR if I can get a capable rig.
