How Microsoft can Win Us Back with the Xbox One

Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes the past couple of months with the Xbox One. But it's not to late to win us back.

Honestly, it'll be a sure buy from me if they can just provide us with an alternative to that 24 hr check. Maybe a disc-based check if online isn't available??

US8F4721d ago (Edited 4721d ago )

This site is too Xbox pro to be taken seriously.

Check out their main page. "The worst moments of E3" and having a plastation logo on the article, no ps3 exclusive title reviews of recent, nothing pro ps3 on their main page, etc. And articles like this. There is a fanboy and the is THE FANBOY and this site is it.

AztecFalcon4721d ago

Hmm.

http://leviathyn.com/games/...

Also, that "worst moments of E3" shows a Sony conference picture but only complains about the PS+ paywall for most multiplayer games. The rest is about Microsoft or Nintendo.

camel_toad4721d ago

I usually buy every console at launch but they've managed to make me not plan on getting the Xbox One. I could bare the $500 (begrudingly) and the 24hr check in nonsense but not being able to trade in the games I'm done with that I paid $60 for? That crosses the line for me.

gamertk4214721d ago (Edited 4721d ago )

What are you talking about? They are allowing trades and used games. Keep trying.

camel_toad4721d ago

@gamertk421

I am proof of the confusion that MS has put out there.

gamertk4214721d ago

It's called Sony hysteria, or willful negligence.

komp4721d ago

@gamertk421

Did you actually read it?

"while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games."

Aww thanks, it was really hard work carrying that physical disk I owned over to my friends house.

"Anyone can play your games on your console"

Gee, thanks man. I appreciate that ability.

"any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time"

Note the space between any and one. That means any 1 person can play your game, not ANYONE. Further up they use the term ANYONE in their page.

"We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers."

Participating? Nice monopoly... how much for your game... .50cents... it is not worth anything to any other stores!!! that's friendly.

"you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once."

So you can give your games away ONCE with the other restriction of 30 days. You can NEVER get it back... not even if you get the disk back.

Hidden down a bit lower

"Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers."

"In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

So if publishers want to make more money like they have been saying they do then why would they allow this themselves?

No renting at launch or loaning.... some words about they might change their minds later on..... in other words not.

"We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons."

Such as MS?

"In the months ahead, we will continue to listen to your feedback as we meet with our partners in the ecosystem to bring additional detail about our policies."

If everyone freaks out enough they might not listen to you...

How do you feel about that?

gamertk4214721d ago

Oh, I've read it, and have zero problems with it. The biggest complaint I've seen about the XB1 is not being able to play single-player games without the daily check-in. Doesn't matter to me. I'll also have a PS4 to play if such a scenario ever arose. But why would you even get an Xbox One if you have a PS4 (some may ask)? Because I prefer Xbox exclusives and love their controllers. PS4 will be there for a couple exclusives and possibly some single player 3rd party experiences. I just would prefer that people who want to state their opinions not propagate fallacies.

The execs from MS have gone very quiet lately. This can mean one of two things.

1. They just don't care about the backlash, simply putting it down to fanboy activity. However they should look at their own forum base and the kind of posts that have been submitted from what I would call their strongest allies.

2. They are getting together to plan a response and completely eliminate all the ambiguous bad PR. This does carry a flaw in that what they come out and say will be set in stone moving forward.

If they choose number two in a knee jerk reaction and defend what they are doing to the public and nothing is changing then that would be fatal for them.

If they delay coming out, it just makes the rumor machine get worse.

A very tricky situation for them. Looking back at the XBOX 360 they did launch with a flawed machine, ie: RROD / overheating issues. They chose to launch anyway knowing it was flawed... http://venturebeat.com/2008...

So that tells me they will stubbornly continue onwards as things stand.

Remember ZUNE + the DRM they shut down on users!!!! Is this an insight to what MS will do in the future???
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1...

Mikeyy4721d ago

They've already come out and defended what they are doing. The DRM isn't going away.

komp4721d ago

If you think DRM is the only problem you are under informed.

I mentioned DRM as many other stories have asked what would happen to all your hard cash physical disk games when they choose to shut it down. Like they did with Zune.
Anything else wrong with my post?

Godmars2904721d ago

No matter how many times "win us back" is brought up, it not going to change the fact that MS's own DRM policies is the main problem. Above all else that's going to be the thing that will likely do them in.

And because of the way they designed XBO, built DRM into its core function, they can't remove it.

BladerunnerZX4721d ago

Even if Microsoft does away with DRM and 24HR CHECK IN I would still never buy an Xbox One.

Required Kinect I have no interest in.

Double_O_Revan4721d ago

100k deposited to my bank account. Other then that, it's PS4 all the way

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio20d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn223d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn222d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown23d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay22d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay22d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac22d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger23d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300023d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde23d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde22d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_21d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
