Xbox One is the Future

PixlBit | "It’s safe to say that Sony delivered an impressive showing at their E3 press conference and gained a ton of good will with gamers looking to upgrade to next generation consoles. While it’s far too early to declare the PS4 the winner of the next console war (the systems are five months away, after all), many people in the gaming community have latched on to the system since it still offers gamers the freedom to trade, sell, and buy used games. It would be foolish to count Microsoft out at this point, however, and even if many elements of the Xbox One are less than attractive, people should understand that it’s a glimpse into the future."

DxTrixterz4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

The future where we customers have no rights at all. Oh no,no,no,NO. X1 is not the future. The future is PS4. We have a right to sell, lend, borrow, give, share things that we brought with our hard earned money and Microsoft is desparately trying to take those rights away from us.

Army_of_Darkness4717d ago

The future of failed consoles that is... I would seriously LMFAO if the wiiU ends up out selling the xbone!

Reverent4717d ago

@Army, I won't be surprised. When the WiiU's big titles finally start to release, I'm sure it'll pick up the pace. Enough to exceed Microsoft anyways.

Mounce4717d ago

Microsoft also said HD-DVD is the future....

We know where that went.

Kevin ButIer4717d ago

Not my future... I'm just waiting to see Titanfall announced for the PS4 and I'm done

blackbeld4717d ago

It's how you look at it.

In my point of view XBone is doomed to fail.

HammadTheBeast4717d ago

I’ve decided to preform a scientific experiment with regards to Cliffy B’s statements. I simulated the non-existent dude bro idiot by drinking heavily and smashing my head in my head in a car door until I could no longer remember my social security number or the scientific method. Unfortunately, I could still tell the difference between $400 and $500, and read the amazon page that listed CoD ghosts as coming to both 360 and PS3. Therefore I still have no reason to buy an XBone, or if I’m this hypothetical proto-idiot even a PS4.See, the “core” group that microsoft pissed off are the ones who get worked up about the whole console war thing, Billy McDouchehat who only plays x-box for CoD has no such brand loyalty. He just wants CoD and he doesn’t really care how he gets it. Microsoft is still going to get spanked by this unless they can either win back the “core” gamers or lower the price enough for people who don’t really care as much to buy the xbone over the PS4.

The future of gaming?
No.

Entertainment?
Too rough of a transition already. So not yet.

A dystopian future?
Maybe.

mochachino4716d ago

There both black consoles. Whatever, this is starting to sound racial.

Yeah, a dystopian future.

Pintheshadows4717d ago

Ironically, MS probably wants the world to be under their control, a lot like the DUP in Infamous Second Son. So basically, go Delsin.

Divine4717d ago

It may be the future in something else. but Ps4 is the future of gaming

Ser4717d ago

It's telling of a future with less and less customer and consumer rights.

sashimi4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

This is the kind of future M$ would want, depicted in

Continuum - Syfy series

Under the corporatocratic and oligarchic dystopia of the North American Union and its "Corporate Congress", life goes on in apparent freedom under a technologically advanced high-surveillance police state.

Divine4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

just to add i like digital when it comes to certain things but when it comes gaming. i like to see my collection of games building up . like right now I would never download the last of us on to my system. But see this is where sony is the future. because they give us the "option"

PS4 is the same thing as always, that's what it is. It took Sony 3 consoles too finally realize they should make a console that devs can take advantage of, something MS has done from the start. Once agian MS will push online gaming forward, while Sony is a generation behind.

TKCMuzzer4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

Wow, what a ridiculous comment, devs knew how to take advantage of PlayStation hardware before Microsoft new what the game industry was. Plus, please explain how Microsoft are pushing online gaming forward by restricting certain countries from accessing it?
At least you have answered my questions.
Who buys a new Xbox when they keep RROD?
Who is the kind of person that Microsoft is relying on to carry them through the bad decisions?

You my friend.

NegativeCreepWA4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

Both the PS2 and the PS3 were known for being hard too develop for.

I've never had a console RROD fortunately, as a matter of fact I went through just as many PS2s and PS3s as I did 360s and original Xboxs.

Do I care if not all countries can use it. No. As far as I'm concerned, that's less people I'll come across talking smack just because I'm American.

Has every console I've owned been hooked up online since 2004, Yes.

The only way I get rid of games is trading them into Gamestop, which I can still do.

A $100 price difference is nothing too me when paid $100 more last gen for a PS3.

So really, all of these so called bad decisions, have no affect on myself.

What I do care about is online gaming, which is something MS has done better from the start.

Btw, I will have both consoles at some point, as always.

SpinalRemains4717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

HammadTheBeast sure could have saved his head and his poor car door if you were around for his experiment.

Its sad that Billy McDoucher would go through all this trouble just play Call of Duty, Brah!

Now with clowdz!

Hard to develop for?

Well that concept didn't seem to matter in the end since MS consoles finish last place every generation.

Seriously. Why do you continually support the generational last place loser when they keep taking more and more while finishing last and last?

Destrania4716d ago

Just because online is a requirement on Xbone doesn't mean it's getting pushed forward any more than PS4. Gaikai will offer incredible technologies. The only difference is, it's an option on PS4. You can still enjoy your games offline.

Freedomland4716d ago

I dont get whats going on with ms, i refuse to belive that this cascade of bad ideas are all their own thinking, surely publishers most be at the forefront of the used game policy and putting pressure on console manufacturers....

cheetah4717d ago

You are spot on. MS are willing participants though and thought Activision and EA would demand Sony did the same. Who knows? Maybe they did and Sony told them to jam it.

Eddie201014717d ago (Edited 4717d ago )

DRM (controlling everything about your purchase) and watching your activity so they can advertise and sell information about your likes and dislikes through the use of a camera that is watching you is part of a future I want nothing to do with.

Also that camera (kinect) is being forced to everyone that buys a Xbox One, even if you will never use it, and it can't be turned off, why not? What's going on there?

Oh, they have to convince the consumer it is worth it, O.K. just tell me how it is worth it or how it will be worth it in the future, just say it, is it a secret until enough people that don't care buy one? If that's the case you bet it will something they want to do to take advantage of the consumer and put more money into shareholders pockets.

Microsoft is relying on peoples ignorance and unfortunately a lot of people choose to be ignorant.

the digital future is way too far off and I feel the dawn of a true digital console will be maybe the 9th or 10th generation. people still buy audio CDs from the store in amounts reaching $220 million. 8 years o the ipod couldn't stop that. Digital will eventually be the future but not anytime soon.

WolfOfDarkness4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

With all respect to my friends and there opinions , The Future is not by making " Quality games only , The ( Graphics Power ) is the most important factor in gaming business , Yes Wii U will have a great Quality games by next year but does that mean it out sell PS4 and xbox one ? nope ... I am a gamer for 25 years and I know what I am talking about , just please watch " The Dark Sorcerer PS4 tech demo " on you tube and tell me what do you think , it's unbelievable demo of what type of graphics PS4 can do ! That is the Future we are waiting for !

I respect all your opinions.

How about that you cannot activate a game outside of a range of IP addresses for that region.

So that means you cannot take your brand new xbox one on a vacation and connect to the internet there...bad news if your going to grandmas house for christmas in a foreign country.. if your outside the zone you cannot play your game!!!!! yes even if you activate in the right region it will block you when away.

PS: where is the physical off button on the xbox one?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio14d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing14d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing14d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Athlon10116d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit15d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg15d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10115d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14916d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay15d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn216d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn215d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown16d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay15d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay15d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac15d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger16d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300016d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde16d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde15d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
