Did Sony Just Save The Next Generation?

Total Revue: "As you may have realized, Sony had their E3 press conference yesterday and although it faltered and flayed in places, the final moments collectively blew the gaming industry’s minds. With a price of $399 and £350, the PS4 was revealed to be $100 dollars cheaper than the Xbox One, a difference that seems more like $1000."

Hell yea they did, it could have been a generation full of DRM and no lending/renting games and just restriction of you using YOUR purchases and console as a Company sees fit and taking all our freedom away.

Gandalf4731d ago

Not the hero we deserved but the hero we needed. Nothing less than a knight. Shining.

Agreed.
If they wanted to milk us, they would have been successful. Yet they didn't.
It feels strange to be respected as a valuable consumer on this market...

pompombrum4731d ago

Couldn't have said it better myself. Sony just saved gaming from something it never should have needed to be saved from.

sony actually saved last gen too, from 2010 MS haven't been in gaming business they were more worried about casuals and wii was worthless towards the end

so ps3 saved the day from late 2009 till now and even now this year alone they have delivered more than people expect this late into a gen

ni nu kuni
sly 4
last of us
god of war
gt6
beyond 2 souls

and much much more

wastedcells4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

F ya they did. But honestly tho I was going to get both PS4 (FIRST) and an X1 but Titanfall is multiplayer only, ryse is what really? So confused. And the other exclusive games are mesh except dead rising 3. Everything good is muliplatform or Sony exclusives. PS4 just became my only next gen console. Oh I already have a wii u but it feels like current gen.... Sorry it does. Please if I'm wrong post a comment. I love games and want every console but drm, online only, $500.00, kinect and most importantly what games are good and what are launch games? So far X1 is a huge ????????? WTF. Sony saved Xmas for me, saved next gen, saved me from buying an X1.

nosferatuzodd4731d ago

yess they did congrats Sony well done my son you make this 10,000 yr old demon proud

andrewer4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

As far as I know, Wii U don't have any of this stuff too, AND you don't have to pay for something like PS+ to play online. I don't care that it's cheap and a good service, but total freedom only Wii U. Gaming will never die with them around.

dedicatedtogamers4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

Let's be honest here, Wii-U isn't known for its online, and what little online it does eventually attain is going to be on the level of PS3/360, and that's an optimistic outlook.

PS4 is a next-gen console, and I think a compromise was needed. Some console gamers complained that they weren't getting big 64-player matches in Battlefield like the PC or sprawling MMOs or f2p games, and so this is what needed to happen to allow that.

andrewer4730d ago

@dedicatedtogamers
Next gen is PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. I don't know what "gen" means to you, but it is related to time. So unless you know Dr. Emmett Brown, stop saying that one console is next-gen while the others are not. And Nintendo doesn't need stuff like 64-player matches Battlefield because, for example, for me, Mario Kart Wii online is a better multiplayer experience than Battlefield's (I have BF3 too). They simply do better things with less...

dedicatedtogamers4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

I was really nervous about next-gen. I figured I would just go PC + handhelds, and maybe get a Wii-U later.

Now, I think I'll add in a PS4 and possibly skip Wii-U (after seeing Nintendo's stubborn refusal today to evolve or listen to their fans).

So in a way, yeah, Sony saved next-gen for me, personally, because I wasn't going to participate (on consoles, at least).

NateCole4731d ago

That's what people didn't notice. Leading up to E3 most gamers i think were worried about the future of console gaming for them. Signs were everywhere and they didn't look good.

Yes games yeah great but the future of console gaming as we know it was hanging on a balance. Basically game policies weighted heavily on gamers mind more so than new games. We know that we will get new games. It was the future of console gaming that we didn't know.

So when Sony did what they did. Every gamer across the world celebrated and a big sigh of relief. You guys have no idea how relived i was when Sony did what they did.

I would have quite console gaming if it weren't for those last few minutes of that Sony conference. A historical moment in gaming history.

Rusty5154731d ago

Yeah that Nintendo direct was pretty underwhelming...Don't get me wrong, smash bros and Mario Kart looked awesome, but we already knew about them. And super Mario 3d world was my biggest let down. When I first heard the name, I was so hyped because it sounded like it'd play like Mario 64, but it's more along the lines of 3d land. (Which was really good. For a HANDHELD.) But I wanted a different experience for the wii u. And retro studios working on a new donkey kong? No metroid prime? Very disappointing direct...

NegativeCreepWA4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

You would go to PC, but yet if you bought any games on Steam, which most people do, you wouldn't be able sell, trade, or lend your games.

Same with every game some of you bought off PSN or XBL.

dedicatedtogamers4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

You clearly don't understand the PC market. First, used PC games have been dead for nearly 20 years, which is part of why I was so passionate about consoles not following in the same footsteps. I was just a kid when used PC gaming began to die, so it's not like I had a chance to stop it. This time around, I wanted to take a stand against consoles doing the same thing.

Second, there are alternatives to Steam on PC that I use quite frequently, like GoG.com which gives DRM-free titles. Steam, for that matter, is often very cheap and I utilize it for it's sales, little more.

I'm aware that I can't sell my $2.49 copy of Sins of a Solar Empire that I bought on sale, but that's a far cry from being forbidden to sell my brand-new copy of a $60 retail game.

NegativeCreepWA4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

One word "hypocrite".

Sorry, I don't believe in double standards. Just like a week ago people were complaining about paying for Live, but it's alright for Sony too do so now because MS is doing something else they don't like.

JackBNimble4731d ago (Edited 4731d ago )

Digital downloads are not the same as disc based, they never have been and I think the gaming community accepts that.

PSplus is also nothing like live, xboxlive takes, ps plus gives back games every month. PS plus gives about 3 games a month (or 36 games a year)for your $50 a year subscription. One could really stop buying games as long as you keep ps plus you will still continue to grow your gaming library.

NegativeCreepWA4730d ago

Hey, I'm all for PS+, but that doesn't change anything. Though while I had PS+, the only games they gave me that I wanted to play, I already owned.

What did nintendo do wrong?... they showed what they said they would show... And did they not really listen to their fans?... This is news to me

rainslacker4731d ago

I had this impending sense of despair during the two weeks after the Xbox reveal. Not because I felt that Sony would do it too, or that it wouldn't matter if I got an Xbox or not, jut that these things MS were doing may become commonplace and accepted, and our entire future of our hobby would change for the worse. Those last 20 minutes of the PS conference made all that go away, and I felt so much relief, and a bit silly for doubting Sony. I've said before, "they've never let me down", and I should have remembered that.:)

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8528d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele27d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk27d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10128d ago (Edited 28d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit27d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg27d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10127d ago (Edited 27d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14927d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle40d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit40d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog41d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog41d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad41d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_41d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage41d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda40d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
